  1. OK - Now how to distribute in a Corp Environment? on Mozilla Tree Closes for 1.0 · · Score: 1
Let's just say for openers that I'm very impressed with Mozilla, and am also fortunate enough to have an employer who would consider a migration to this browser.

Now, IE has continuous rollouts, etc, which can be done via some push technology (sms, etc - none of which we have in our small environment). Therefore, a big 'win' would be how we could roll out mozilla updates to remote clients without a huge pain. Has anyone had experience in this area?

  2. Re:If Spyware would only follow these rules... on Fair Software Installation · · Score: 1
I agree - I think installer programs should include *MANDATORY* lists of all : system files being registered-their versions and placement, files being installed, registry entries, etc. This should be an option by Vise, InstallMaster, Windows Installer (MSI), etc which Microsoft *makes* them include. For the vast majority of respectable software, you would then be empowered to know exactly what was going to be installed on your box.

I think, also, that when you flirt with companies that make products which skirt the edge of legal issues, you will probably get software that is questionable to begin with. They obviously don't care too much for the rights of others (RIAA be damned), so what makes you think they care about your rights?

Does anyone know of that windows software that tracks all changes to registry, files, etc. during software installation? I know there are a few out there that do this.

I think there is an awful lot of talk about how a boss should react, plan, and do, and very little about the personal responsibility of the [geek] programmer.

Managers are typically bound by a huge number of constraints - political, social, budgetary, etc. I think many here expect their management staff to have the same level of knowledge as their coders, dba's, etc. In my opinion, this is the last person I want as a manager (more about that below).

It is our duty to learn how to communicate our needs and thoughts in coherent, non-technical manners to (mostly) non-technical managers. We should be able to sway opinion and drive needs as much as upper management. Education is the key - both up and down the management chain.

As far as having a technically sound manager - I personally would rather have one that listens to me rather than has his/her own predetermined opinions on technology. I think that Managers need to be more socially mobile and agile than technically sound in order to get the political backing they typically need for technical projects.

I can't even tell you the joy it brought me to read that, because my friends and I make it an absolute point to do the same thing, at every damn store that has that crappy policy - Costco, Fry's, etc.

Fry's is especially gratuitous because of the incredibly poor service you get inside... walking past the door nazis while smiling makes my day. A favorite is to pretend you're having an in-depth cell phone conversation, and pretend not to hear them. One fool followed me out into the parking lot.. "Sir, Sir!" all the while I ignored him.

On a serious note however, I simply refuse to be treated like a criminal at a business. It's demeaning, and the public should *not* tolerate it. Even if it *is* their policy.

  7. Endless bitching - stop it! on RIAA to DoS Pirates? · · Score: 3, Insightful
Every other day here on /. there is another article about the RIAA. It's so simple - STOP BUYING MUSIC FROM THE LARGER LABELS. Your only vote is your pocketbook. No one here in this forum has the power, clout, or means with which to oppose them. We know they print cdroms for probably 2cents a piece, yet everyone flocks to the nearest Tower Records to pay $17 a smack for a cdrom - of which probably two tunes might be worth having.

Start supporting and frequenting your local bands and musicians. Let them know (while you have their ear) what you think of the larger labels and their tactics. More importantly, find out what the *musicians* think, since not only do they love the music they play, but eventually might like to [GASP!] make a living playing their music! [[insert thunderous silence]]

If it means you go without the next Backstreet Boys [sic] albumn, then so be it. Why not make your own music, then post it to the web for free. Heck, this might even be the predecesor for turning a large portion of the population into the 'artists' they didn't know they were.

I flexed my consumer muscle two years ago - I got RedHat certified for business purposes, and four months ago made a final switch from M$ to Mandrake 8.0.

I converted all my stuff from Win2K/Office to Mandrake 8.0. It took about two months for the total conversion (let me tell you email from damnable Outlook was a pain) but now I'm 100% MS free. Only legacy thing which is a pain is Access. I might add that I purchased VMWare to keep my stuff avail should I need it during the transition.

I'm no longer concerned with licensing, software EULAs, piracy, inability to play particular music formats, or big brother bill. I don't care about service packs breaking my whole machine, web bugs, or spending ridiculous amounts of $$ to keep up with their silly software releases and $$ for software that should be included with the OS.

My current machine will probably last me four years - much longer than if I stayed with the M$/Intel upgrade cycle.

I now purchase software because I feel the development for it is worthwhile (i.e. vmware and mandrake), not because I'm in danger of violating commercial law.

The only way to really stop M$ is to break their pattern of generating revenue. As a collective of consumers, we have this ability. It might take time, but history shows that all monopolies eventually fail. Should our government actually figure out a way to outlaw open source software, then perhaps it is time for me to change my place of residence. Until then, I urge you all to figure out a time and cohesive manner with which you can start refusing to give M$ the $$ they demand.

Access 2000 does support DAO - MS just recommends that you move to the ADO model. Many of us haven't yet, because the ADO model is still missing a few features. I've written a good number of databases in Access 2000 using both ADO and DAO - all of them work. What will be most upgradable in the future? The ADO coded dbs of course.

Things to think about when coding in Access: Prepare all your code, and coding datatypes and functions for an easy upsize to SQL Server. This means start using ADO now. So many companies do the quick dev hack and use the easy route with Access which bogs them down later for that unexpected upsize. Take my word on this one.

I think a six month strike on purchasing cdroms or any type of music from major labels (and minor) would pretty much be the pressure they need. Unfortunately, it can't be done. &J
