When I worked in the E-Warfare division of (deleted) we ran into this issue whenever we used brass prototype packages to house circuits. The cause of the whisker growth (in brass) was the repeated temperature cycling (TC) of the package. Apparently in the presence of the TC, the tin in the brass preferentially crystalized out of the brass in whisker form and pushed out of the sides. Kinda neat, actually, except for the occasional power supply short. We found that a solid nickel-plate or copper-plate fixed the problem nicely.
The parallel (conductive) bus structures on silicon wafers will have to be addressed also. Per the "integrated optics" (IO)comment earlier, closely spaced optical "channels" have a nasty habit of evanescent-field-coupling from one to another (it is amazingly counterintuitive), so opague blocks will have to be put between them. (I always knew my grad-studies on IO would come in handy some day). They have a ways to go yet -unless they want to run the optical busses serially..?
"Sometimes everybody else goes away - but I'm always right here."(R.A. Heinlein - "Time Enough for Love")
The quantum assertion that "observing it changes it" only works because - at the quantum level - you have to apply energy (e.g. illumination) to see it, which disturbs its position or momentum. We don't apply energy to see something large because the energy is already impinging on the something. Therefore it is already "changed" irrespective of whether we or not observe it. That observed state is called objective reality.
I think the whole article is trollbait, as no reputably physicist would fail to grasp the silliness of the premise.
...was truly geek classic. It was kludgy, dumb, clunky, obviously home-made, and a Rube Goldberg work of art! Out of all of them it was the only one that made a "statement" to me, although the prisoner-in-the-mouse was pretty good.
Hell, my neighbors just brought me a fifth of Macallan Cask Strength single-malt! I guess all that simple tinkering and virus-blocking and malware-removing and trivial firewall-installing and (minor)troubleshooting I did last year paid off.
No offense intended, but "Cookies my *ss". Your skills are worth more than that - or should be - even to your nice, friendly neighbors.
Ah! That's the secret...it DOES exist in 4D. You just can't see the other one.:))
Seriously, isn't there a mathematical projection, i.e. a 3D "shadow" that a hypercube would cast if it existed that's pretty cool looking? I recall seeing a drawing long, long ago. Uh, I think the shadow is infinitly large so they only draw a segment, but it was neat anyway.
In Arizona, its called Virga i.e. rain that never reaches the ground.
Its actually quite neat to see in the distance. You can see the downpour falling, usually from under a nice dark thundercloud (uh, where else?), and then it kinda gets fuzzy and vague, and then it just....isn't. The "isn't" boundary also moves up and down slowly - due to air currents and such, I guess. Its quite peaceful to observe.
I for one would pay big bucks to see two or more of these little puppies go at it against each other. The commercial income could pay for the whole development program.
At 700-800 rounds per minute (cyclic) for the onboard weapon, I really DO NOT want to see what one of these things will do to a flesh-and-blood.
Agreed - Just record (re-digitize) the analog output onto the machine of choice. And...I doubt that it will take the hardware hackers long to figure out a flash mem transfer method. How hard can it be?
...and the participants will all lie. Does anyone really believe that the EU, Russian, etc folks are going to comply? This is like the recent EU/Iran accord about nuclear weapons. Does anyone really believe Iran will keep its promise?
...twice...and still didn't see the part where they showed "a direct link" between the warming and greenhouse gasses. Yeah, I saw the same old "we think man's activities might...blahblah" and some more of the usueal "scientists believe there is a link....blahblah" but not once did have I EVER heard or read that the link had been proven. Also, the author mentions land in the arctic. Uh, thats news to me.
As a (retired) EE at age 51, I've built a lot of projects. I learned a long time ago to ask myself the following question before any home project starts:
Ya left one out. Write/go to any local company doing e-tech type manufacturing or engineering. Ask if they'll donate their old obsolete eqpt that they've already written off. I've never been in an engineering lab yet that didn't have at least one dinosaur in it.

we'll finally get to see all those electrons and holes?
Naaa...Opportunity is just looking for her return ticket.

I think this development could only be considered a fly in the ointment.
...was the previous price really 10x10x450=$45K?
Wow...that's some cost reduction.

As for the rest....no cigar.
Cookie!?

Meanwhile, I will be offline for a few days...

I was under the impression that the Italian Space Agency was also involved....but I may be getting my missions mixed up.
...and CAPS means you're shouting like a spoiled child. Why are you shouting?

There goes my Christmas book budget! Another "must-have" gets added to my list.

This thing reminds me of a similar item built back in the 70's - a flying Snoopy-on-a-doghouse. It was way cool.
...Conservative.
Try going to DrudgeReport and then clicking on any of the columnists - they usually do a good job of ripping the mainstream (i.e. Liberal) media.
But it doesn't matter - we're all gonna die anyway.
...The sampling rate is higher!
Seriously, this is good news. IMHO the real fun is in designing analog "functions" and adding smarts and calibration via a uC hardware controller.

Do I want to HAVE it, or do I want to BUILD it.
Saved myself a lot of work that way.
