I'll bite on this one. I guess you've never heard of Yahoo or Hotmail. Both have used FreeBSD for web serving.

This is an interview that was done by an external website and not interviews.slashdot.org.

It would be nice if the distros would lay out thier filesystems in a standard way like FreeBSD does.

The base goes in /bin,/sbin for essentials, and /usr/bin, /usr/sbin for non-essentials, but very handy to have binaries that are in the base system.

Under /usr we have src for the source to the base system. No dumb symlinks like linux->linux-2.4.whatever. just /usr/src/sys for the kernel.

all of the applications installed via the FreeBSD ports collection that are not part of the base go into /usr/local by default.

Everything is always easy to find. If I don't know where soemthing is, I can just guess 9 times out of 10, or use hier(7) (the man page that describes beautifully the hierarchy of the filesystem) to figure out where it's supposed to be.

  5. Unsafe Languages on Diebold Voting Systems Grossly Insecure · · Score: 1

I read and enjoyed the paper, but I was disturbed by one thing. The author(s) kept bringing up the fact that the system was coded in C++ - an "unsafe" language, then suggested that the system should be written in Java or C#.

I've always thought that the only thing that made C++ "unsafe" was unsafe programming and design principles, something that, according to the paper, the Diebold system is littered with.

The bottom line is that the authors should not have bothered to evangelize Java and C# and instead focused more on how they could have made the C++ code "safe". If the primary flaw is design, then no language could save this code from the pits of insecurity.

It's up to the family to teach values, not cartoons. Period. I don't want my kid to learn her morals from a TV producer and screenwriter.

    That's why cartoons today suck.

Really, if you ask alot of the early kernel developers, I think that they would tell you that the reason that linux is so popular today is that it is completely open source. If Linux was made closed source, IMHO the project would have never left the stack of floppies on Linus' desk.

If open source does not matter, then why isn't everyone using Sun's free version of Solaris X86?
