Intimidation is one reason. Another is embarrassment.

With this upcoming election with the likely hood of a black candidate then it becomes a little of both. Many will reply with what they think the questioner wants. This will happen regardless if the person being asked is black, white, brown, red, green, or blue. Besides, why should they tell anyone. Its their right to cast their vote in secret. Let alone the fact you will have people who purposely give the wrong answer just to jack the results.

This is what makes secret voting so damn important. People should not modify their votes because they are uncomfortable or intimidated.

This is as important, if not more important, than fraud because its the worst kind of fraud.

There are members of Congress looking to take away this freedom from those whose workplaces are deciding whether to unionize or not. The rule is that to get the vote to take place a majority of cards must be returned. This happens a lot because most people are not going to stand up to someone or worse a group and tell them "no I don't want a union". They fear reprisal or intimidation, let alone flat out harassment.

Then when the vote is held each is cast in secret and suddenly the union loses. Do you really want to believe exit polls are any different? No, what they serve now is sensationalism in the press and the basis for conspiracy theories. They throw doubt onto a vote for people who refuse to accept they could lose. After all an election is the ultimate rejection for the loser.

The idea solution. Electronic voting using pictures selected by the candidate and a paper card spit out printed with the name and picture on it. This card would be folded and inserted into a ballot box to be used if the election is contested. Record retention should be sufficient to protect the right of recount if probably cause can be show.

What it all boils down to is that no matter what standard the Federal Government tries to set someone tries to cheat it. That is why there is always such an uproar versus standardized tests. Down here in Georgia they failed nearly 40% of all students in tested grades versus a standardized test. They knew it was coming. They even had practice tests. Is it all the schools fault?

No. Students seem have this sense of inevitability. They are still of the belief that they don't have to. After all anything else they complain about in school gets changed. I don't see their attitudes as defeatism, its entitlement that they suffer. They don't have to do this, that, or what not. We don't have the right culture in schools, especially city schools among minority students. Until we change the fabric of society the MTV generations will forever think themselves above "working hard". They are all going to be rap starts, professional sports players, or worse win the lottery!

We gave up control of our schools to "feel gooders". Now its all about grief counselors and no winners allowed because no one should be a loser. When we removed the reward of success what did we expect? I have seen articles where every student got to walk the diploma line regardless if they graduated just so they didn't feel ostracized. Well tough shit. Your boss ain't going to worry about making a failure to feel good. If you don't perform your in for a world of hurt. I guess you could go into government work, of all categories in the job market they have added more jobs than anyone and everyone knows the saying about how its near impossible to lose a government job.

Schools and students are simply trying to cheat the system. The problem is the schools encourage it because they don't allow for losers. They don't want to hurt little Bobby's feelings so they set him up to fail in life. If they want control of our kids then they should be responsible for them. They get hell bent if someone raises a finger about the Bible in school or complains about sex education yet they are completely aloof when it comes to holding the kids to a standard of education.

Private school was the only recourse I found. Standards had to be met or we might not be allowed to come back. Students were encouraged to be better. I don't see that outside of a few select public schools; you know I hear it all the time how so and so's public school isn't like those others but sorry it is.

What good is throwing money at public schools if the money isn't going to improve our children? Too many city schools are jobs programs for friends of the political powers. Dumping grounds for cronies. If that county school can graduate more students at a higher GPA and their students do better in higher education all the while costing the local taxpayers less how is the city's problem money related?

I would prefer more options for parents to send their children to schools of their choice. This means the dreaded "voucher". Make it so the money follows the child and not the school. This might be the only kick in the pants some school systems will understand. We have great teachers. We spend more than enough to educate the children we have, we just spend it wrong.

The easy solution is to "throw money at the problem" but that is used as an excuse to rid ourselves of the responsibility for making the hard choices. All we get with this thrown money is more cronies. I read my local "paper" to see schools with trailers and look at the changes that go on the system. What do I notice most after capital improvements? How many more people in non teaching positions crop up. Suddenly there are committees paid out of school funds to do work already done elsewhere or not needed. More money means more government employees, not necessarily teachers.

Sorry, no more money. Account for what they have. They owe to the children. We owe it the children.

I think a lot of success for a language is the system for which it is written.

I have dabbled in C, C++, Pascal (both Turbo and USCD), Modula-2, and want to take a look at ADA. Yet one thing I find is that the simpler it is the better. I was always put off with the complex naming which is prevalent in many OO languages. It almost seemed as if they could add one more "dot" then some kind of epiphany would be realized. The concept I practice when I deal with COBOL and RPGLE is to separate the interface from the rules applied to the data. While my videos handling modules do the interface work they don't know the business rules or only the slightest of subsets which would not be logical to isolate. File handling and field handling is done separately.

Am I out of date with my languages, probably if you view it from what is taught in school, yet it is the platform which gives the languages I work in the ability to get it done safely, accurately, and quickly. Best of all, the value of the work is preserved as the platform changes because the underlying system which processes my code is immune to the machine it runs on. The very same code written in the late 80s runs unchanged. Its value and safety is preserved. I don't need to use a new language to get work done, I do use new languages to present it to new "screens". The separation of presentation from the work ensures many languages can coexist in whatever future we find.

When it comes to dogs; my mother breeds, judges, and shows, a certain purebred; the bulk of good dog / bad dog behavior that owners see is largely governed by how much time the puppy had with its mother. Ideally it should be twelve weeks. This is not saying you can't breed in aggressiveness as it had been done to shepherds and the respectable breeders spent a generations (of dogs) trying to get it out.

The first few weeks in the care of a new owner will set the new puppy on his path to an individual personality. The key to getting a good dog versus a bad dog is : treat it nicely and give it space. If the new dog needs the reassurance of your company it will seek you out. Don't yell at the dog or around it. The pet is looking for acceptance and if you yell at your kids/spouse/tv etc it will affect the dog. About the "space" item, if a dog wants to get away the let it; provided of course its safe. I have seen more than one puppy returned as a nervous wreck to my parents because one kid or adult in the new owner family simply would not let the dog alone, the interesting side story is that these people took their kid to a psychiatrist who basically told them the kid was not mature enough for a pet but they tried anyway . They have their needs for rest too.
