  1. Tribute to the United States on Further Updates On Terrorist Attack · · Score: 3, Flamebait

The following is from an email I once received. I think it is appropriate to post it at this time.

This, from a Canadian newspaper, is worth sharing.

America: The Good Neighbor. Widespread but only partial news coverage was given recently to a remarkable editorial broadcast from Toronto by Gordon Sinclair, a Canadian television Commentator.

What follows is the full text of his trenchant remarks as printed in the Congressional Record:

"This Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for the Americans as the most generous and possibly the least appreciated people on all the earth. Germany, Japan and, to a lesser extent, Britain and Italy were lifted out of the debris of war by the Americans who poured in billions of dollars and forgave other billions in debts. None of these countries is today paying even the interest on its remaining debts to the United States.

When France was in danger of collapsing in 1956, it was the Americans who propped it up, and their reward was to be insulted and swindled on the streets of Paris. I was there. I saw it.

When earthquakes hit distant cities, it is the United States that hurries in to help. This spring, 5 American communities were flattened by tornadoes. Nobody helped.

The Marshall Plan and the Truman Policy pumped billions of dollars into discouraged countries. Now newspapers in those countries are writing about the decadent, warmongering America.

I'd like to see just one of those countries that is gloating over the erosion of the United States dollar build its own airplane. Does any other country in the world have a plane to equal the Boeing Jumbo Jet, the Lockheed Tri-Star, or the Douglas DC10? If so, why don't they fly them? Why do all the International lines except Russia fly American Planes?

Why does no other land on earth even consider putting a man or woman on the moon? You talk about Japan technology, and you get radios. You talk about German technology, and you get automobiles. You talk about American technology, and you find men on the moon--not once, but several times--and safely home again.

You talk about scandals, and the Americans put theirs right in the store window for everybody to look at. Even their draft-dodgers are not pursued and hounded. They are here on our streets, and most of them, unless they are breaking Canadian laws, are getting American dollars from ma and pa at home to spend here. When the railways of France, Germany and India were breaking down through age, it was the Americans who rebuilt them. When the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York Central went broke, nobody loaned them an old caboose. Both are still broke.

I can name you 5000 times when the Americans raced to the help of other people in trouble. Can you name me even one time when someone else raced to the Americans in trouble? I don't think there was outside help even during the San Francisco earthquake.

Our neighbors have faced it alone, and I'm one Canadian who is tired of hearing them get kicked around. They will come out of this thing with their flag high. And when they do, they are entitled to thumb their nose at the lands that are gloating over their present troubles.

I hope Canada is not one of those."

Stand proud, America! Wear it proudly!!

This is one of the best editorials that I have ever read regarding the United States. It is nice that one man realizes it. I only wish that the rest of the world would realize it. We are always blamed for everything, and never even get a thank you for the things we do.

I would hope that each of you would send this to as many people as you can and emphasize that they should send it to as many of their friends until this letter is sent to every person on the web. I am just a single American that has read this, I SURE HOPE THAT A LOT MORE READ IT SOON.

I have never heard of Americans, or people of any *civilized* country for that matter, celebrating the deaths of so many thousands of *innocent* lives. I wish to point out that these same people--the ones who are celebrating right now--benefit from millions or billions of dollars of American money sent to them as foreign aid. The thought of these scumbags celebrating the deaths of those who support them disgusts me beyond belief. I am writing letters to folks in our state and federal governments, urging them to cut off monetary support for these countries. This will serve two purposes:

I'd like to know, if the distinction between two philosophies is a "tired argument" then what exactly is Microsoft's argument? Every single sentence that comes out of that company includes the word "innovative." Well, if Microsoft is so innovative, why do their products suck so much? Why, in order to increase their profits, do they have to send lawyers after a free software community? This is, after all, what this story is all about. They want to damage the community in such a way that will benefit them. Is that what you call innovation?

Often (within fractions of an hour), there are commercials on TV or the radio telling consumers to cut down on their power usage to conserve the precious resources we have. And people are responding. Stores and other buildings actually have signs proudly stating that they have dimmed their lights! I'd like to know where these so-called consumer advocates groups were when the SOB governor of this state and his suit friends raked in 5 billion dollars of the electrical company's dough, when all kinds of politicians' pockets were lined with greenbacks, and now they want to patronize the consumers?! Excuse my language but f*ck those sons of bitches!

Look at the gasoline prices in California. Several months ago, prices rose by about 30 to 40 cents a gallon. There was a lot of noise and many people got upset. Well, the anger has faded, people have gotten used to the prices and now the prices have settled at the high end since nobody complains anymore. Now, with electrical prices rising just like fuel did a while ago, the electrical company is forcing consumers to pay a 5 billion dollar tab, and guess what? I think that after the debt is paid, prices will simply stay high, making some rich people very happy.

It upsets me so much that people live with these things and don't do anything about it! Oh, how much I wish a bunch of people would get together and start a "refuse to pay" campaign. Get everyone in this state to use all the power they want and refuse to pay their bill. What would the electrical company do? Cut everybody's power? They would lose such a significant portion of their customer base that they would be out of business and you can rest assured that the federal government will get involved and electrical prices will be back where they should be.

Back to the topic of consumer devices... The only way to stop this is to make people stop buying things. What's wrong with repairing your existing refrigerator instead of buying a new one? You've already paid for it. So pay a little more and it'll run for another ten years before you have to repair it again. What's wrong with your existing consumer electronics? What kind of bullsh*t is this to put GPS receivers in products to disable them if they're used in a way the company doesn't agree with? Things don't look good if they're going in this direction. On a positive note, I know that within no time of a tagged product being released, some smart hardware crackers will figure out how to disable the offensive tag. Who needs to broadcast pirate GPS signals if you can disable the receiver on the product?

Anyway, I hope I've made my point. Folks need to stop putting up with things like this. And I'm not being a hippocrite or whatever when I say that: I don't agree with DVD and I don't own any products incorporating that offensive attempt at so-called technology.

Why am I saying this? Because when I was in the first and second grades, I was hyperactive during recess and in class. I used to draw a lot of crap all over my assignments. I had all kinds of ideas about supernatural things. In short, I was a kid who wanted to play rather than learn in class. Actually, that's because in schools here in the U.S., teachers go over the same thing about fifty times, and I caught everything the first time so I got bored.

Anyway, the school psychologist decided that there was something wrong with me. At the time (early 80's) I don't think they classified kids as having ADD but they called it something else. Actually, to this day, I have a report written by this psychologist, several pages in length, which describes my "problems" in fine detail. It even includes something I said to her in the hall about having a magic stick or sword made of earth, fire and lightning or something like that. You know what, I think any kid who doesn't come up with bullsh1t like that should be expelled from school.

The psychologist had my parents get me some pills that were supposed to calm me down and make me pay attention in class. God only knows what was in those pills. One thing of which I am absolutely certain is that those pills actually damaged me. (There are certain chemicals used in some foods (aspertame), and in water (flouride), that have been scientifically proven to cause brain damage.) Those pills made me concentrate because they made me stupid, so I had to actually listen to understand what was going on. In other words, a company couldn't be a bank and a stockbroker at the same time. If you look closely, you may see that the government is allowing this to slide as well.

It is really no use trying to understand the policy of the government or why certain things are done. You have to remember that the government is run by people. Some of them care for the better good of the nation and work hard towards that goal. Most of them (who are in any position of power) work hard to get their own way. (As in, if I were king, this is how the world would be. Now these are the steps I have to take to become king.) Always remember the golden rule: "He who has the gold makes the rules." They make decisions without understanding the technical perspectives. They don't want or care to understand anything technical. Their world works in dollar amounts, and the technical knowledge, even just a scratch-the-surface understanding of anything, is just uninteresting microdetails to them.

My argument is that business executives who want to run a technical company NEED to understand technology. I've had this discussion with quite a few execs like this, and they insist... no, they demand not to understand. They want to look at everything from a business perspective and leave the technical "details" (which really aren't details at all but rather important facts) to the technical people. This is where business will fail.

These business executives think they know everything. The company wants to "jump on the bandwagon" (another phrase that means absolutely nothing) and deliver Linux solutions. Those idiots (the execs) don't even know what Linux is, but they make up fancy-looking (but meaningless) press releases that tell the world how their "solution" is going to change leverage innovative technology and improve the world. Then they assign the job -- the real work of making their solution a reality (they don't even know what reality they want to achieve) to the technical people who work their butts off to do it. And then (this is the worst part), because those corporate fools insist on not understanding anything technical, they wonder why it takes so long to deliver a reliable solution. So they put their hard-working technical people under extreme pressure, which results in unreliable solutions.

That is what pisses me off... the "market" is a bunch of people who don't know a damn thing about software. As a result of their incompetence, the world is going nowhere. Everyone (all those companies jumping on the f*cking bandwagon) has their pedal to the metal, but the trans is not in gear! This is why the tech sector, which was overinflated just a little while ago, is crumbling. Reality is setting in. As I've said: to be successful, business people NEED to bite the bullet and take the time to fully understand technology. If they insist on not doing this, as most of them do, they are in the wrong field of business. The tech-sector is not for those who don't understand tech.

I think that only time will tell... and I firmly believe that in a few years, the remaining tech-sector will consist of companies where the execs know what they're talking about when they mention Linux or another software product.
