Sometimes you'll see a retail store advertise a product, such as a dishwasher, with the claim that they'll match the price if you find it lower at a competing store. The fine print says that it must be the exact same model number. What they don't tell you is that the manufacturer's model number is exclusive to that store chain so it's impossible to find that *exact* model number at a competing store.

  12. Firefox software updates on Mozilla Gains on Internet Explorer · · Score: 4, Insightful

Count me as one who just recently switched from IE to Firefox (actually count me as two since I switched both my computers). In the early years I ran Mosaic and Netscape but switched to IE because I was tired of Netscape's constant crashes. IE was the least of all evils at that time, and everytime I went back to take a peek at Netscape's latest version it was still buggier and slower than IE.

So far Firefox seems ok and renders all the websites I visit properly. It still seems to render slower than IE but with faster computers now it's not such a noticeable difference. I see a few bugs but I'll wait for version 1.0 before passing serious judgement.

The most severe bug however is the Software Update feature. I installed 0.9.1 last week and almost immediately I saw an article on Slashdot about a Firefox security hole and fix. I didn't immediately attempt to install the fix. So a few days later I went to mozilla.org and saw that 0.9.2 was the latest version. Help->About shows I'm still at 0.9.1. OK, no problem, the automatic update probably checks once a month. I click "Update Now" and Firefox tells me that no updates are available. WTF? Seems like this is an ideal time to show that, not only does Firefox fix the bugs faster than IE, but they have an infrastructure to get the fixes out to the users. If a security bug were actively being exploited, I'd want it to be fixed ASAP without me having to proactively surf the geek sites like Slashdot to find out about the fix, and then manually go to mozilla.org to find, download, and install the fix. Your momma ain't gonna be so proactive.

As I said, I realize it's prerelease so I'm not passing serious judgement yet, but the update technology had better work by the time they get to 1.0 if they expect to be a serious contender.

Yes, it's Sony's fault, not MS. Last year I got a new Dell machine at work but the person who ordered it for me accidentally got it with XP Home. I wiped the machine and installed XP Pro. I took Dell's OEM CD home and installed it on a PC I built at home. Works fine, so Dell's OEM version does not enforce that it's running on a Dell PC.

Had it not worked then I would have bought a new copy of XP Home. But MS already had the money for the Dell version so it would have been a shame to waste it.

I have a film scanner (Minolta Dimage Scan Speed) I use for some special purpose photography. As you say, scanner resolution is much higher than today's digital cameras. I get excellent quality pictures from the digital camera and it is *much* more convenient. When using my film camera I have to change the film every 24 or 36 shots, while I can take hundreds of digital pics before changing the card.

  23. Re:Not necessarily on Yahoo! Develops Anti-Spam Architecture · · Score: 2, Insightful

While some ISPs might quickly jump on the bandwagon to be able to accept mail from yahoo.com, most corporations will not. Even if Microsoft updates Exchange Server to support this, how many corporations are going to upgrade? It's a major deal to upgrade the email servers at a big company, and corporations that don't deal directly with consumers probably get an insignificant amount of mail from yahoo.com, so what's the business motivation? If it's so I can receive a personal email from a friend, my company will tell me to stop using the company servers for personal use.
