I would say, it is augmented reality, not virtual reality.
Virtual reality in lenses would be no fun at all - *especially* if the simulation is out of sync with the real world ^^
Regarding the smoke in the forrest.
There are many research topics to create smart grids of sensors. these sensors communicate with each other, creating communications lanes to save energy. They are very small and can be dropped by a plane. These sensor networks can then monitor humidity and temperature. As a result, they can immediately notify the operators about fires.
Ah, and they are cheap as well!
... you really think that mankind will survive the next 100 years?
One day we will make some terrible, not reverseable mistake.
I always have a bad feeling about these things.
What services are they killing?
Sky-Map is open-sourced and the others not really used.
You wouldnt pay for a service nobody (or at least not enough customers) use.
I did not use these services, so please correct me if i am wrong.
You can not make everything by yourself.
In most cases, it is easier to buy/use 3rd party code/software e.g. for reusability and maintainability.
They are experts that know their software. "Incoming" bugfixes and security updates are two additional pros. Of course are there drawbacks (money, bad api, dependency,...).
But you always have to check every angle and make some tradeoffs. Basically, thats what libraries are for!
Example: We developed many Eclipse plug-ins and used 3rd party plug-ins/metamodels from other universities. If there is an update creating an incompability or the other project is not continued anymore, we have to reimplement it ourselfs or switch to the next alternative.
I find this idea quite nice. Encourage people to have some fun while programming (boring stuff).
This wont result in bad code. The gain for MS: create an account to store and publish your achievements.
I agree. Its a great event especially for the kids.
Maybe there will be more events of this kind in other cities/countries.
But limited to small towns - you need a lot of people to agree switching the lights off.
Well, it turns out that our own radio and TV signals don't actually get out into our own galaxy as much as we once thought. They make it barely beyond the influence of our sun and then fade.
So aliens next system over are not actually watching our old TV shows.
Another galaxy would be much farther away and even less likely to hear any signals. Space is big. Really big.
THANK GOD!
That commercials and stupid afternoon shows...
My boss is not interessted in code. Just if there exists enough/sufficient tests. He assumes that the code fulfills all requirements (e.g. maintainabilty).
Why should he read through it?
Hmm, why do we need a Kinect for Window? To use gestures on a PC?
For education and doing cool stuff (automated rigging, 3D scans and so on) people already using the available hardware to achive their goals.
Do we need the PC version to work with windows and their tools more efficiently? Or for PC games (PC games = games in front of a pc, high likely in a comfortable chair) ?
I am just a bit confused about the why. Please enlighten me.
Problem with some of the google services, including the first TV service attempt:
They hook you and drop the service later on. Everyone deserves a second chance, but this time, consumers and partners will be much more carefully. But they have some experience now - they might not make the same mistake twice.
Would someone please recap this article for me?
Whats the statement?

... so shoot it down.

Well, any one of us can only stop voting for 3 of them. And to be honest, there's a lot of people out there who are totally okay with corruption.
The corrupted.
Never, way to costly!
"Requiring a warrant" is a joke. The FISA courts approve about 99.5 percent of requests: http://epic.org/privacy/wiretap/stats/fisa_stats.html
Then maybe they create a webportal with an easy to use printable form.
The authors of this survey assumed that teenage boys had these problems since the beginning of time ;-)

Heard that phrase from my ex a couple of times ;-)
