Thats not true at all. I went out and bought both Neverwinter Nights and Unreal Tournament 2004 when they came out specifically becuase they came with a Linux Binary. I emailed the Vice President of ? the company that made UT2004 and he actually replied and said that although Linux sales are miniscule, the only way to judge them is by the sort of email I sent him.
Go out and buy the software, email the company that made it and everyone wins. I didnt care that the source was released for either game, I was happy with the fact that I could play them on my Linux box.
I like Xine but if PowerDVD comes out for general Distros and its good, (free preview), I will probably buy it. I bought the Boxed set 10+ from Mandrake even though I downloaded the Distro earlier just to show my support.
The only way to show support for companies that make Linux based products is to BUY them.
You are wrong on that part. So what if the code on your product is GPL'ed? You are still SELLING the HARDWARE, all you are doing is allowing people to modify it at will. This will in fact INCREASE your sales to the computer community as they can now roll out their own custom solutions and not be bogged down by the compiled software.
The GPL is not a new idea, it's principle is based in history. People thoughout the centuries have written down their scientific breakthroughs, finds and other discoveries. They believed that by sharing what they found and developed would help the world. They are still credited with the finds, but now everyone has access to them. Why are computers so different? Because money and companies are involved. Stupid managers and officers all see, Propritary CODE MUST NOT SHARE, when in fact if they made good products, GPL'd the code they would make money.
You see even though you GPL the code does not mean that your competitor can steal it, they too are bound by it and must make their changes public, which in turn helps you. WHOA!!! The GPL is a idea based on the sharing of knowledge for the benefit of the whole world.

Here in Los Angeles, KROQ is doing a "Super Bowl" contest where they send someone to the "Super Bowl" game, but they cannot call it the "Super Bowl" becuase of the NFL restriction. So they are referring to it as the "Big Game". It would cost them an insane amount of money to call it the "Super Bowl Contests" and its ridiculous. This whole trademark BS is so stupid sometimes. How can we live in a age where you cant refer to something by its official name without paying money??? I read slashdot all the time and I am so disgusted by the crap going on around us, what IS this world coming to?
I dont really wonder. My roomate is like 300 lbs+, claims she is on a diet, yet fries up half a pound of bacon for breakfast. Eats junk food all day, eats out at fast food all the time. I know why she is fast, she eats TOO much and the wrong things. Everyone does to a certain degree, the ones who are fat dont know when to stop eating, or eat because they are bored, sad etc...
How can I write something illeterate garbage if you stop after the 1st word. So I misspelled it, I am not a spelling teacher. I was hoping that you would be a little smarter and figure it out.
Seriosly folks, how many Linux PDA's do we need. I mean we hear stories about them ALL the time and then they vanish. The problem is that they go away and the people who got them are now stuck with a PDA with no future upgrades. Maybe AMD can support such a device but I doubt it will be profitable. How many people here actually would buy this thing when it came out? I would not because I dont need one and the last PDA I bought I never used because it was bulky and hated carrying it around, I dont carry anything that doesnt fit in my pocket. I Linux PDA/Cellphone that is the size of a cell phone is what I need, I would buy that one.

I used to smell for NASA. Using my sense of smell my duty was to decide if a certain smell might cause astronauts to gag on the smell in a more concentrated environment.
Hmm ok. How will this help the janitoral position you are applying for?
I can tell you on a scale of 1 to 10 how much this shit smells?
I live in LA and you dont need a machine gun. It helps. Really helps sometimes, but not necessary. A well made double barrel shotgun is usually enough.
Have you ever lost a pen? or a pencil? I think we do have the technology to make something so small and useable as you describe. I would hate to have one because I would be afraid to lose something so small. Plus at $100's of dollars a piece it would get expensive. I cant lose my laptop so easily unless I forget it but that is another story. I'm talking about it falling out of your pocket etc. You talk about it being small and functional which is fine, maybe you could throw a GPS thing put in there to keep track of it.
I fully understood what the parent post had in mind. If you are so curious as to why it was so large. It was an AI program that simulated battles for the Games Workshop game called Warhammer 40K. It can be found at this website.
You should be writing 20K lines of code a year. This is how you hone your skills. Don't worry about the code being useful/portfolio-stuff.
20K a year? Whoa, I wrote a 20k AI program that I didnt even use becuase I decided to make a multiplayer game only. It took me about a week. I cant get a programming job because that "lack of experiance thing" but 20K does not seem to be a lot. Then since I cant get a programming job I wouldnt really know.
I don't think you could do much with the airwaves except express your point of view. You couldnt play any music, the RIAA would beat you with a law stick. You could not report the sports, lest the different sports agencies beat you with their law sticks, or bats depending on the agency. You would be able to express your view. A view that the place we now live in is getting more and more fucked up by the day. A place where you might get sued if you reveal how you broke a copy-protection scheme, by the people who ASKED you do break it. You cannot post your own guitar tablature for others to view. You cannot like dark music, dress gothic and go to school lest people think you might SNAP! and start shooting people. You cannot imagine when the last time you did not get spam was. You cannot talk about your gun collection and knife and sword collection at work because you will be labeled off and fired for being a threat to safety. All these and more you can say on the radio, not many people will listen to you as they do not care about such things as privacy. Most dont care about how many databases contain their address, name, phone numbers for every place they have lived in the last 15 years. For the most part people will say "If it does not affect me, why should I care." they, of course, do not realize that by the time it does affect them it will be too late.
So tell me, what would YOU do with your airtime. I for one would not spend a single dime on something that I can do for free. I can post my views, I can talk to people and I can say whatever I damn well please. I would not pay to say it because The Bill of Rights says I DO NOT HAVE TO!
Thinkgeek sells the photon lights? I know one is in Infrared and WILL cause havoc for the sensitive systems. at 20 bucks each + a small battery and it will last for hours. I think it would be fun to walk around with one of those just to piss of the security folks, since it is not illegal they cant do anything.
Play with one for about 5 years. Learn its in's and out's. Pair with a nice Marshall. Learn to manipulate the sound. No Effects neccessary. Win the 2001 Guitarmageddon Contest (which I will). Smile. The Les Paul is by far the best sounding guitar out there.
Neverwinter Nights will prove to the Gaming Companies that releasing games under multiple platforms is a good thing. I will buy the linux version of the game upon release. My friends will buy the Windows version. If they are not on the same CD? Since Neverwinter Nights is being made in OpenGL they can use the same code base and just modify for the different OS's when problems come up.
I have a feeling Neverwinter Nights will be huge, esp in the Linux crowd since a lot of us are Role-Players. It is being released on Windows, Linux, Mac AND BeOS. If that is not a testament to cross-platform gaming, I don't know what is.
