    For anyone going to an university I highly recommend taking an introductionary course to astronomy. It was definitly the most interesting course I've taken, and one I'll remember for a long time.

    There are (well reasoned) theories that the spirals are caused by earlier collisions. Thus this future collision will actually help produce new spirals. It is considered possible that the rotation of the galaxy will wind up the spirals so much they will disappear over time.

    Other interesting aspects of the spirals is that they do not actually contain much more mass, 5% more iirc, than the space between the spirals. There is a larger number of new stars being formed in the spirals, thus the bright but shortlived stars make them visible.

    These star births are caused by the compression of cold molecular clouds. Thus when another smaller galaxy collides it may cause shockwaves to travel through the galaxy compressing the molecular clouds.

    Non-bar spiral galaxies are just a special case of the barred spiral with a bar length of less than epsilon.

    Although i agree with part of your argument, that google can improve IM as they have web-mail, but they are not entirely analogous. Web-mail relies on a standarized protocol which can communicate with everyone no matter what client they use.

    IM could really need some kind of standarization, preferably not relying on a single entity to act as the hub. I think that what we need is a system like that used for email, with the features of IM. (With spam protection;)

    Actually, gas prices will continue to soar. We are at, or have already passed, peak oil production. The remaining oil reserviors will be more expensive to extract, demand will keep rising as production plumets.

    You can have as big a party as you want, it won't solve the problem. About patents?... Dunno... Seems to me those with capital are getting more and more political power as regular people keep watching Idol.

    The embryo is part of the species homo sapiens. But it is *not* entirely the same as a sentient creature we usually think of when using the word "human".

    Most people would be against killing the latter for the benefit of others. The former? That isn't so clear, but in any case don't mix those togheter when discussing stem cell research.

    There's no way the US can come claim it harbors terrorists or evil dictators. So why can't we just leave the US out of this? The countries involved are Canada and Denmark...

    Ofcourse, they'll need to modify this number if more people speak up about them having been a source of statistical error.

    Because it's way overpriced, few are going to buy thousands of songs at $1 a piece. One could claim that if you don't have enough cash to spend, then you won't have thousands of songs available for listening at any time.

    Some might look at it as freeloading, stealing or worse... I see it as competition, and currently iTunes is too expensive and restrictive.

    Oh, you're completely right. Here I though they had just patented something that would be obvious to anyone with some experience in programming.
