Windows bit worked wizard worked, made boot floppy rebooted spiffy graphical restart, X came up like a dream installer Progress meter got to 25% and X locked solid. console dead as the proverbial dodo. Had no way of kicking X so I tried again. Four times it booted from the floppy and locked. I got bored at this point and put Suse 6.1 on it.

I think a lot of longish term slashdot readers might agree with my point that the quality of discussion threads on slashdot has been in serious decline for a little while now. It was bad enough with the first post mania and all, but with the grits guys and the petrified girls and the YAF.. invading every thread now, not to mention the downright obscene garbage posters, the cut and paste merchants and the Beatles guy.

I am finding it less and less worthwhile and enjoyable to follow the discussions , as well as less coherent.

Have you any plans to further deal with this sort of thing, above and beyond moderation ?

Is it time for the end of AC posting, esp seeing as there is the post anonymously option ?

And lastly, do you find these trends a little depressing?

I don't think I've had a usable result out of any of the linux milestone builds since M6. It seems to be hellishly sensitive to shared library versions that I just don't seem to find commonly in place on many of the linux boxes I use.

I realise that this comment will generate a multitude of responses along the lines of "It works just fine for me loser, stop spreading FUD" but I'm just honestly reporting the state of play as I find it.

I would love to use a OS browser with the functionality that Mozilla offers , I would like to chip in to the development towards stability, even if only in the form of usable bug reports, just not quite enough to manually upgrade my libc , C++ runtime , compiler , ORB etc to match what seem to be specific linking requirements that you just don't get from the majority of GTK Unix Apps, even including that cherished old scapegoat for stability problems, GNOME .

The searching I have done seems to indicate that the released builds will work fine out of the box on up to the minute Red Hat installations, but I haven't been able to coax them into working on the older Red Hat SuSE or Debian boxes I have access to.

I'm just wondering if the ability to run on a wider range of GNU/Linux systems out there might engage or enhance that massively parallel debugging engine that helps drive OS projects along at such a staggering rate of improvement.

FYI, the Nokia operates on hands free speakerphone when it is open , making it perfectly possible to use the PDA while talking on the phone so long as you don't mind being on speaker. It really could do with a headphone socket, though a hands free is also available that provides this.

A downside to this is that combined with the tiny keyboard it is perfectly possible to accidentally call people when you are just trying to read an email or adjust your schedule , esp if beer is involved in the equation.

I'd generally agree with the sentiments that its not a great phone or a great PDA but if you need all the functionality it provides its definitely good enough in all categories, and its a lot smaller than carrying about a separate PDA / Modem / Fax / browser combination in whatever other config takes your fancy. I couldn't manage without my 9110 these days. Nothing beats getting a page from a struggling server while you're in the bar ,flipping out the phone , logging in and fixing it, then carrying on with your socialising without even leaving the barstool !! =)

I never said it wasn't possible and my two weeks was a slight exaggeration, its just the more your box deviates from the vanilla distro and the more you put in by hand, the more pointless a CD upgrade becomes.

And I think as broadband net access becomes gradually more and more plentiful and the average linux user more and more knowledgeable, then this sentiment might grow a little.

I'm sure I'm not the only Linux user who has started to move away from using the shrink wrapped stuff. You install a Red Hat, or a Suse or a Mandrake or whatever, you spend a few months setting loads of stuff up , tweaking it , installing all of your favourite gizmos and libraries from source, graudually making your box as comfortable as a pair of well worn slippers. Then six months down the line attracted by the shiny new box on the shelf at PC world you buy a updated copy and do the upgrade thing. Then you spend the next 2 weeks in mild shock getting everything working the way it used to again.

And after doing that once, how inclined are you to to fork out your dollars to go through that experience again ?

Syntactically java doesn't have a whole lot more than C , and less than C++. The problem with having such a bare bones language implementation is that you need to build up a pretty decent grasp of the available classes before you can do anything , even doing console and file IO requires you to learn a few bundles.

I know when I was first learning java probably my biggest problem was tying up a few days implementing something that I inevitably then stumbled across in the standard class library somewhere, usually a day or so after I had written it.
