  1. Lame on Sci-Fi Movies and 'Bad Science' · · Score: 1

the science in all the so-called "good" sci-fi movies mentioned in this article is just as bad as the "bad" ones - as acknowledged by its author. the only difference is that the author liked the good movies better. so i fail to see their point. they're not saying dodgy physics in movies in itself is a bad thing, just that they don't make sci-fi movies like they used to.

also i don't remember the Matrix: Reloaded trying to explain how the mass delusion worked - but hey, it's a new movie, so it must have been crap and i'm too young to notice.

  2. Re:Arthur Dent == Hugh Grant on Hitchhikers Guide To Be Made Into A Movie · · Score: 1

I remember one film reviewer commenting that when they heard Nick Hornby's book High Fidelity was being made into a movie and transplanted from London to New York they cringed. After seeing the film they were very impressed and couldn't help think that had the story been set in London, they would have cast Grant in the lead role and well... who has ever seen Grant doing the whole floppy-haired-bumbling-stifled-British-guy and not felt the urge to kick his floppy-haired head in.

Yeah what was the go with casting that blonde american chick as Trillian? Possibly the worst thing about the series (the rest of the cast were excellent).

It says a lot about Slashdot when naive remarks like this are modded up to "5 - Insightful".

What brainwashing takes place in American schools that breeds such naivete and misplaced passion - a nation of affluent well meaning people so free of cynicism that they are blind to the excesses, hypocrisy and human rights abuses of its rulers?

  7. Re:do tastes really change that much? on Moby Says Techie Fans = Fewer Sales · · Score: 4, Insightful

This is the funny thing I've noticed with a few bands - especially REM, Counting Crows and Pearl Jam - who take their music seriously. Each new album they are simultaneously accused of reinventing themselves AND producing a clone of their previous material.

I agree with the undercurrent of this thread - there is a fair degree of denial out there that some people didn't like the second albums simply because their appreciation of the first one was a fad.

Actually, what I meant by published papers was that their techniques used in the comp, were published (like all teams were obliged to). That said, what's a little hyperbole when pride is involved.

  10. The winner is in the Legged League... on Robocup 2002 World Robot Soccer Championships · · Score: 1

UNSW (Uni of New South Wales, Aust). Always is. They have won every game they have competed in, with an average lead of 30 goals (no joke).

The difference is, they've seen the limitations of the dogs and kludged appropriately for the environment, while the other teams have used very generalised AI algortihms, that while very clever, are beyond the dog's processing power and give them no competitive advantage.

They used this technique in 2000, published the results, and no one learned and they won again in 2001. I'll back them again, even if the AI lecturer in charge is a bit of a tool.

Yeah, I can't understand why people take their disappointment with the Phantom Menace as a personal insult from Lucas.

He was inspired by Joseph Campbell AND Saturday Matinee Pulp Science Fiction (and doubtless other things). Deal with it.

I s'pose you haven't heard he also intends to rerelease the Original Triology (again) as the "Archival Edition" with newly filmed scenes and elements - namely introducing the Emporer and Coruscant as early as A New Hope. I think that's why we're still waiting for the Original Triology on DVD.

Why can't he just leave the damn thing alone?

That said, despite all the advances in processing power and the rest in that time period, AI has always lagged far behind expectation. Even today, most of AI's greatest achievements can be attributed to sleight of hand and numerous kludges, that would prohibit a system from ever being useful in any generaliseable way.

  19. Palestinian Holocaust Deniers on Globalization · · Score: 1

Just reading through the whole forum I can't help but notice that criticizing the roles of Israel, and its chief supporter the US, is tantamount to being a holocaust denier, as reflected in the replies and the moderation they receive.

Millenia of historically documented persecution and torture should never exempt any race or nation from being reprimanded.

Israel is the aggressor occupying Palestine. The US, far from being "the only country trying to bring about peace in the Middle East", arms and funds Israel and it's persecution of the Palestinians. Yes, the Palestinians retaliate, wouldn't you?

That does not make me an anti-semite.
