As good as DVD is, it's NOT the quality of first generation (aka out of the camera) video tape, even in NTSC format,
Perhaps, if you are referring to a source such as DV or Betacam, but definately not VHS. Most DVD's we watch, however, are transfers from film, and not video. The quality of film is much different than the quality of any video source.
You're not getting this motherboard for your 486 firewall either, I hope.
I think what he was saying is that his 486 has no USB ports, and this new board has no PS/2 ports, and so he can't operate both with his present KVM switch.
If you don't think we're behind you might want to look at some Japanese cell phones
This has nothing to do with Japanese technology, and everything to do with Japanese Cellphone infrastructure. I might be wrong here, but I imagine the fact that Japan probably has only 1 or 2 major cellphone players (as far as national coverage goes) and here in North America we have about 30, would have a lot to do with the advanced infrastructure. Much easier to provide coverage for a country the size of Japan, or even Finland, as opposed to a country the size of Canada or the USA. Especially when your company controls the majority of the network.
Now if there was a way to hook up one of those 60" plasma screens (and afford one...).
I wouldn't recommend this. At least not yet. Granted I don't know alot about plasma technology, but we recently got a shipment at work for a new exhibit. Mostly showing Flash animations, mixed with some video.
Burn In is a major problem. A static image can cause burn-in within 20 minutes. They are great if the image is constantly moving, but I have yet to see a game that doesn't have some sort of static image always on screen.
Speaking of airwolf, does anyone else here fondly remember that show and wish for re-runs? Airwolf, The A-Team, Knight Rider... I want to see them all over again!
I used to think this, but recently I have been blessed with about 300 TV channels, one of which shows the A-Team daily. I loved this show as a kid. Seeing it now, it is quite a dissapointment. It is probably in your best interest to not watch it, and just remember it from the fond memories.
These things are largely just STUPID, STUPID, STUPID, but they have great geek "sex appeal," which helps put Linux on more geek desktops.
I thought the market to penetrate here was the non-geek desktop. Most geeks already have Linux on the desktop. Most Windows users I know don't even know what AA and translucency are.
I've been where you are, and let me say that your #1 problem will probably be cooling. If it's really a closet/old office/whatever, it is unlikely your building management will be able to get enough cooling to you. I'd recommend planning for one of those free-standing moving cooling units that can vent into the drop ceiling. By planning, I mean both power and space.
I do agree with this, however there is one problem to mention. Check with the building management before installing such a thing. The building management here was very reluctant to let us install a simple free-standing AC unit. They were concerned about water leaks, mostly. These free-standing units need somewhere to drain to. There is an evaporation pan, but the building management was concerned about it overflowing, on a weekend, flowing down to the floors below us. A very unlikely scenario, but it concerned them none the less. They finally agreed to let us install it after we agreed to tie it into the fire alarm system, to notify them of an overflow.
. I think they're referring to the Soundbubble, which will create a 'bubble' within which you can *only* hear the sound source you want
I saw this too. I was watching The Prisoner reruns last night, and No. 6 used something just like this. He was in a record shop listening to some records, and instead of headphones, there was a small plastic bubble attached to the wall. Kind of like one of those old hair dryers. Stick your head in and listen to the sound that only you can hear.
I figure this is the only place in the world that might appreciate my naming convention. By adding in all the autobots, decepticons and even the new predacons and combiners, you could probably have close to 100 names.
I remember back in the olden days when we had one rubber band for the ammo and the trigger was top-mounted on the gun as a clothespin!
I remember back in my olden days, when we had one rubber band for the ammo and the trigger was my other hand. My other thumb and index finger, to be precise.
cigarette taxes are use-based (you only pay them if you actually smoke), while these are broad-based (you pay even if you only back up, say, digital photos)
This is also a use-based tax. My mother hasn't bought a blank cd in her life, and neither have many people I know. I realize that most people on Slashdot probably use blank CD's daily, but that just isn't the case for the general public. For every CD burner out there, how many people don't even own a computer?
It's quite a racket to release a barebones edition, have all the diehard fans buy it up, then wait a few years and release a bigger version to sell to the same audience again
I hope you aren't implying that only Disney does this. Every studio does this. And will continue to do this.
but I remember when DJ's at radio stations were developing massive libraries of music off of napster.
I thought that radio stations got CD's for free from the labels. Naturally, the labels that provide more 'extras' get more play. Half of my vinyl collection has Promotional Use Only stamped on the sleeves, all cast aways from radio stations that upgraded to CD's. I'm sure most of their CD's have the same notice on them.
Does such a thing even exist for desktop machines? The noisiest part of my workstation is the power supply fan. If someone could manfacture an external one, it would be practically silent. I think.
It would be great to be able to connect a small power connector like a laptop. How practical would this be?
I am no electrical engineer, but I don't see why this isn't feasible. Seeing as it would be outside the case, it could be covered in heat sinks, cooling fins, not needing a cooling fan at all. Might get a little hot, but at least it'd be silent.
Come on. Someone here has to be able to build one.
Just finished reading Cryptonomicon... Has anybody ever seen this actually work? If so, we have nothing to worry about. Just wait for your next door neighbor to buy the new MPAA approved device, and copy as many movies and music as you wish.
Reminds me of the way I used to copy audio tapes when I was a kid. I'd borrow my sister's boom box and put it in front of mine, which did the recording.
Sure, the quality was shit, but at least I copied it.
Someone just noticed that you can reconstruct people's listening habits from their CDDB lookups - no big deal.
Not a big deal to me, either. However, I am proud of my music choices. The people who are concerned here are the ones who pretend to be cool, and like (insert latest cool band here) but get home and listen to Backstreet Boys (are they even around anymore?)

Why can't people do this the good old-fashioned way - with drugs and alcohol?
The way smokes and alcohol are being taxed in Canada, it is almost cheaper to buy an PS2 or Xbox.
I have NEVER seen Halo, arguably the killer app current for the xbox, running on a demo station
The Future Shop near my house (North Toronto) has had a Halo demo running for months.

however the ATI drivers need to be labeled better, they refer to things like radeon VE, while consumers just know radeon 7000,7500,8500)
What about the consumers such as myself who actually own a Radeon VE? The other ATI drivers are useless for me.
Next year, I think I will not even bother to try to get any information off the web. I'll just go for a walk or something
Holy crap, that is one long walk. If you can manage to run you could possible re-enact the whole marathon thing from Forrest Gump.

So why doesn't CARP just give it up and rename themselves CRAP?
Sorry, dude. Already taken by the Canadian Conservative Reform Alliance Party.
Oh, wait, this is Skipjack the distribution, not Skipjack the algorithm
Damn, I thought it was skipjack the tuna!
Oh yeah, I forgot. Only linux users know how to fix broken hardware...

How many people are using Linux **right now** as they view this page
Well, my firewall runs linux. The browser I am using on a Windows machine accesses the net through it, so I guess I'm using Linux right now.
The gaming rig I use to play Counterstrike is also behind the same Linux firewall.
