What's worse is that I was reading the biography of Abraham Lincoln, and I got to choose which ending to buy. In the good ending, he drop-kicks the gun out of John Wilkes Booth's hands and ends up dating a former slave who looks like Halle Barry. Something just seemed wrong about the whole deal.

There are times when I have no problem with DLC. For example, I wouldn't expect Rock Band to include every bit of DLC available. In that case, you can see DLC as a way of giving the customer a choice of what content he or she is willing to pay for.

Agreed. I speak from experience. My first job was for a small company where the bosses loved cars and stuff that I considered "macho B.S.". Was I an elitist? Yes. But, I feel that my problems extended beyond "being the first on the chopping block". It was a fully unsatisfying experience, being the guy who just shows up, pulls his 8 hours, and leaves. I may not be ecstatic about every job I have, but fitting in is now a big requisite when I go on interviews.

(And I admit that I was a snob. I should have tried harder to fit in. You are preparing for the next few years of your life. Do you really want to half of every day alone in a cubicle? Or do you want some social interaction at the water cooler/lunch room/whatever?)

Exactly. And Nintendo's success wasn't by providing the most powerful hardware. Haters were dismissing it as a modded gamecube the day it came out. It was successful because it was fun, original, reasonably priced, and aimed at casual players. If they try to push customers into the standard upgrade cycle by throwing out a new system with a faster CPU and a better graphics card, that isn't going to make it any more fun or original, but it will be more expensive, and drive off some casual players.

They need to come up with a new innovation first.

These are idealized suppositions, not actualities. Someone who drinks is not necessarily someone who drives. Drunk driving is still a problem despite the laws, and I know of a person or two injured by drunk drivers.

You are right, that I was conflating the two, but I also stated that this is a problem that cannot be entirely "fixed". You are assuming that if any drunk drivers exist, all our attempts have failed. The question is, "what is the per capita drunk driving rate under one law, vs the rate under a different law, or no law".

As for your solution about punishment after the fact, it may work. I would suggest a work-around for people who quit drinking entirely.

We want less of things we cannot entirely get rid of (alcohol related deaths, for example), and more of things we cannot have in infinite quantities (like money). We also try to find a balance between contradictory values (my freedom to consume alcohol vs your freedom to not be run over). So, yes, it becomes a trade-off. How important is it that I, and a large majority of people like me, get alcohol, or that you, and a small minority of people like you, don't die*? Those are value judgments that science and math cannot answer in an objective fashion.

As for age, that's just a proxy for social responsibility.

    * That sounds cruel, but the same question can be asked replacing "alcohol" with driving, leaving the house, playing sports, or hundreds of other activities.
