    Since it takes a matter of minutes for the missiles to reach each other's continent, the hope is that the other person wont have time to launch their missiles at you, thus your missiles aimed at their silos destroy their silos and keep them from destroying you.

    Of course it all depends on how fast the other guy's warning system and missile commanders are. This is where all that trillion dollar hardware and design comes into play.

    It helps form the basis of physics, of which one needs to know before that is then applied to technology and what not to benefit mankind.

    Kind of like before computers could be built, logic theory needed to be worked out. Back in the 1920s, logic theory was fairly useless and relegated to logicians in academia. Then the computer came along and logic theory found its place.

    As distasteful as I (and most others here im sure) find child pornography, whats truly wrong about it is the exploitation of children it involves. Of course, thats only in real pictures.

    We might as well punish a person for thinking about sex with a child if we are to ban mere drawings or generated child porn. As rape fantasies more often than not do NOT lead to rape, neither does thoughts of having sex with a child lead to predation.

    I have little doubt that virtually every commercial cryptographic scheme has been broken by the NSA & co. They are the world's largest employer of extremely brilliant mathematicians and computer scientists with access to perhaps the largest cache of supercomputers in the world.

    All this backdoor nonsense is simply a ploy to shorten the processing time on the supercomputers to crack it. Save a few billion dollars here and there in computation time.

    you're thinking of 'common carrier' status. It relates to telecommunications companies and has nothing to do with software.

    I assure you, a great deal (if not most) of your banking data is stored in MS-sql databases.

    I write software for a financial services company, we do most of our work with MS-sql because thats what most banks use.

    horrendously complex to someone who doesnt bother learning it maybe... i find it simpler than ASP, really.

    Aside from standard CGI variables, theres logging methods, as well as it includes any custom config options you've specified in the configuration that only pertain to your servlet.

    Truly, if you havent bothered to try to learn it, dont bitch about it. That's just silly.

    So what does Tomcat have to do with this? If I write in Java and compile it to a host machine executeable binary format instead of a class file, and run it under the CGI mechanism, would it still be called a servlet?

    No. Nor would it run correctly. Servlets depend on several things exposed to them by the Servlet Container. Security sandbox, the ServletContext (a ton of config variables and methods useful for servlets) and other things. It is the servlet container which does the most basic processing of requests, then passing them on down to the servlet, usually. If you really want to know about it, buy a copy of Java Server Programming.

    tomcat is a servlet container, designed for running java servlets. Servlets are a type of java application (closer to an application than an applet really...less restrictive security sandbox)
    designed specifically for server applications.

    That's really putting it too simply, but without getting into the details of servlet design...

    actually it was an engineer working on a radar system had a candy bar melt in his pocket while he was near the radar tube. The company was Amana I believe (who then made far, far more money selling microwave ovens)

    The thing about it is, most people in america are blissfully ignorant about foreign policies here. This all must change, if we are to prevent this from happening ever again.

    these services DO exist. They're aimed at commercial users primarily however, and are not cheap. Mostly because the machines are very large professional quality 3d printers and cost thousands and thousands of dollars. And since they specialize in speciality things (like one-time models) and not production runs, its not cheap to use their services.

    Heh, seriously though, lisp is nice if you're into functional programming and need the easy morphism that it allows. I prefer java, but thats because I learned that kind of programming before functional, and never quite got the hang of it.
