But if it can be banned (by the purchase of law) then the changeover process will be long, drawn out and wastefull- if it happens at all. There will have to be many mayters along the way as well.
if you have a mouse anywhere near the light and then some light could be getting into the mouse makeing it think it has moved.
Try the experiment with the mouse covered up with a rug and switching the light on.
I had an experiance where at certain times of the day the mouse cursor would go a bit funny. took a while to work out it was when the sun peeped throught the window at just the right angle...
Why make anything adjustable from the consumer end that can affect profitibility???!!! Its a broken secuity model (which may lead to a broken business).
I *think* that what cdf12345 is getting at by saying:
"By the way, why not jail the programmers at Microsoft for writing an e-mail client that allows "billions and billions of damage""
Is that money losses are being caused by Microsoft as they are also caused by the email virus, AND maybe just as intentially- just phrased better: It isn't cost effective to [make the computer crash less] [provide better secturity] [etc] so we wont do it, this sounds reasonable to everyone but it is just as intentially causing loss money as someone who writes the virus.
Something about nuclear power is that all of the stations that i know of are only good for base load (the load thats always there) not for peak demand, so if you implement nuclear power in its present form you still need other means of generation to cope with peak demand. (which can be quite a bit more than twice the base load)
The reason for nuclear power only being used for base load is partly economic, you have to recover the very high cost of the station so it is best to keep it running continuously, and partly safety: things are more likley to go wrong when you change things fast. (and you have to be a fast acting station if you are supplying peak demand).
No one technology is a cure all so it is good to have a range of options.
Hydro and natural gas stations are good (fast acting) for peak demand.
Cable TV was born stealing the content of others and re-selling that content to consumers. Suppliers of cable services would set up an antenna, capture the commercial broadcasts made by television stations, and then resell those broadcasts to their customers.
The copyright holders did not like this "theft." Twice they asked the Supreme Court to shut it down. Twice the Court said no. So it fell to Congress to strike a balance between cable TV and copyright holders. Congress in turn followed the model set by player pianos: Cable TV had to pay for the content it broadcast, but the content holders did not have an absolute right to grant or deny the right to broadcast its content.
I guess the Germans understand "free market" better than the Americans, without a viable alternative there is no freedom of choice, if there is no alternative to choose there is no free market.
The free market needs maitainance, if it gets dominated by colluding huge companies that can kill competition (or just purchase it) then the term free market is just an advertising jingle.
Do you have a better reference for this article- i would like to read the whole article. Had a search on the site you linked to but couldn't find it...
You may have a point about the strength of indignation, however:
Its all about a monopoly using its position to leverage into other areas. Clearly not everything MS does will fall into the bad basket, however it does mean that they should and will be under closer watch. People will jump on them more than other companies because they have a history.
This is really interesting. I personally would be willing to pay for a gaurentee of authenticity- however if something is copy-protected then its a challenge to break.
With Authentication you are providing somthing. With copy prevention you are just taking stuff away.
You have to be carefull to make sure that the freedoms that you are proposing that everyone gives up now and for the future WILL actually help the solve problem.
If it doesn't help solve the problem then you have just helped throw our freedoms away for nothing.
So far I dont think that the proposed 'solutions' will do anything to help stop this activity, but will reduce our freedom.
If you don't like the laws of the US then move elsewhere
Unfortunatly if the US has its way all other contries will enact the same laws (trade agreements). Hence the decisions that the US makes are important for everyone- there is no where to go that the US won't have an influence over in some manner or other. (if nothing else the influence will be a mammoth effort not to be influeced which is still and influence)
"if you are running an operating system that needs them" (needs the patches)
This seems to be a fairly high and mighty comment so soon after we were informed via slashdot that linux and the ilk are just as able to support 'virus' (aka trojan in this case) as the other (win*) os's are.
What do you use on Windows that you can't get on another platform? Honestly?
Quite a lot unfortunatly. I have been trying to find replacement software in the electronics EDA environment (protel equivalent) which the closest is eagle pcb (good but no inbuild simulation engine)
And try getting a PLD compiler, fitter and device programmer combination for linux, so that you can design for programmable logic devices...
If anyone else wants to use these tools on linux please send a request to the companies in question. They often respond "we will do it when there are enough requests" so make the requests!!!
People rather ease of use even at the expense of fair trading.
There are so few people who want to set their computer up. They just want it to work. Linux et al. REQUIRES much setting up effort!! Once setup its brilliant BUT it requires much effort to setup.
Hence until there is an easy to setup alternative OS consumers will take the easy option even if that means handing the collective computing soul to just one company.
These these are *** experiments ***
For some reason people seem to feel that experiments MUST reach their desired outcome first go or the project is a failure.
If we were able to do this then we wouldn't ever need to do experiments - we would go straight to production every time. (and have no more accidental discoveries either- which fairly much everything started with at some time, even electrical energy)
At the moment I am a bit down on marketing so I blame marketing for over hyping the immediate possiblities rather than presenting a longer term view.
If i had the money... just like everyone else i'd be purchasing a ticket too.
I guess we can safely say that earth orbit is a dangerous and adventurous place but isnt a brand new undescovered frontier any longer.
Having rich powerfull people go into space may just be the ticket to bring space exploration back into the main stream and in a new way.
Then again it could just be plain old discrimination, the rich get the chance and the poor don't. However it so happens that almost everything we do is based on the dollar as a decision tool, if we want to change the rules for this one instance are we ready for the rules to change for everything else? For example:
Can i swim here
-no-
but here is my money
-no-
I don't like your kind, go away.
hmmm maybe money is a little less biased.
Weeell, all the new gizmos arround here always get connected to a computer other than mine and i have only a 10Mbit lan connection (embedded developers need no more apparently).
So, assuming i had 10.8TB of worthwhile data and i wanted to copy it to the nifty credit card sized storage device in order to take it home (maybe to play it on my HDTV at super high resolution or something along those lines) then i would have to upgrade my 10Mbit lan connection or wait 3 and a half months...
if tango is a dos app then it will *probably* be very well supported in emulation using dosemu or another dos emulator under linux - then no one has to learn new stuff...
I guess so: this just leaves the software driver for the gadget the job of dealing with a partially working connector without corruption of any data- i guess this should be no problem.
But if it can be banned (by the purchase of law) then the changeover process will be long, drawn out and wastefull- if it happens at all. There will have to be many mayters along the way as well.

My opinion is that we are at a kind of plateu where improvements aren't making that much of an effect for end users.
However I hope progress isn't slowed as the holy grail is to achieve real photo quality in real time and that would be an awsome sight.
wasnt it just the case that till recently you couldnt actualy patent software methods?

I wish i could point at you and laugh and laugh and laugh... and think to myself in a self satisfied way- thats not how **WE** do it!
And this is a very good reason as to why MS is pushing forward with its .NET campaign.
