...but none of the above means a damn, to the few guys who are quietly doing it and doing it well.
Which is another way of saying that those of us outside of their masturbatory world have no reason to be concerned, and that any "revolution" involving said diversion is really nothing more than useless hype.
The ren fair people are off re-enacting 12century nose picking techniqes, and practicing them well; but has exactly no bearing on me and my life.
I worked in alternative radio in the eighties. You can pinpoint the exact moment alternative died with the first widespread appearance of the word "grunge", a cynical major-label marketing term for punk/rock in flannel. "Grunge" isn't an example of phenomena discussed here, it's its corporate grave marker.
I totally agree. However, we're talking about two different things.
You're referring to the 80's college-radio underground and I'm talking about the mid-90's pop-movement (the one that foisted alanis morisette, no doubt and other alterna-pop acts on us).
Think about punk music. I think it was a reaction to professionalim. Almost. Mostly that was a reaction against overly long and slick songs and a movement towards shorter and less pretentious music. But part of the point was the now-dead rock-n-roll ethos that anyone could have a band and go out and play music.
This is pretty much 100% bullshit

In much the same way that over-paying 20-something year old ameteur html coders did not create a "new economy" so this too will fizzle.
Most notably, Rap has not been an ameteur medium since the time when public enemy became big and the labels decided to push it. Unless you are an affancido (sp?) of Rap, none of the people you have heard of are 'ameteurs' except in the artifically created sense that eminem, vanilla ice, the village people and the monkees are 'ameteurs'. Rap has been a slick, professional and tightly-controlled form of expression for almost two fucking decades now.
Mod me flamebait if you like, but as someone who's lived through the "grunge", the "alternative" and the "internet" revolutions this -to me- stinks to high heaven of yet more masturbatory and self-congratulatory hot air.
Which is appropriate, as the "revolution" being touted signifies nothing.
Seriously. Someone is dead. Two others are injured.
People die every day. Seriously. Many of them children. Many of them after living lives of such desperate poverty that most of us cannot even imagine it except in vague abstract terms.
In my mind crocodile tears over people who you do not know, and whom you only care about because they're linked to a famous person are far more patronising and -frankly- downright insulting to the very real, very person suffering and grief that they are going through than if I had made a beowulf cluster of first post jokes about how the OSS movment will start wearing tin-foil hats and start looking for MS-assasins behind every grassy knoll.
Their suffering is real.
But your outrage is contrived and your "grief" is a grief of convience.
If Dick Stallman's name wasn't linked to this; no-one would give a shit --and that's the only reason this is on/.
..and the first 3 posts I see are jokes about it. That's nothing; what's really something is if it had been Bill Gates instead of Dick "-smoker" Stallman those jokes would be +5 right now instead of -1 troll.
If you define the average computer user as someone who uses Windows, then of course, you will find that 100% of average users use Windows.
That's either sloppy or selective reading comprehension right there. I never wrote that "the average computer user" ran windows; what I wrote was the average windows user.
And no, for a proffessional enviroment, OOo does not work well enough to replace office. Not by a long shot.
Again, you make the mistake of assuming anyone gives two shits what you run.
We don't.
I'm explaining why people who run windows probably run it.
No-one gives two shits about the rambling of fundamentalist linux users, other than other linux extremists (a group I'm proud to not be a member of).
WTF would I want to run ANY version of Windows at home, if I'm running Linux?
That's just pure, unmitigated flamebait, but I'll bite.
No-one cares if YOU want to run Linux, Windows or OS/2. YOU are not the average consumer; this is evidenced by the fact that you are running linux.
The average windows user probably wants to use windows because only windows will allow you to reliably open and modify MS-Word documents (since office only runs reliably on Windows). Or perhaps they want to play games, most of which will not run on Linux -even with WINE. Or maybe they have windows-specific sound or other software that -again- will not function on Linux, and for which a linux counter-part either doesn't exist, or is of questionably quality.
Again, just because YOU are so blinded by Linux fundamentalism that you cannot imagine any reason to run windows, does not mean that the rest of us have no reason to.
If anyone but Mel was doing it I'd agree with you 100%. After "dracula dead and loving it" and "robin hood, men in tights" I don't have the trust in Mel Brooks to think that way, personally.
The fact that he's rehashing a semi-successfull outing makes me more nervous, in fact (of course he couldn't pick something too obvious, such as blazing saddles two or sth).
As it is I think it has the possibility of being even better than the first one.
No, that is highly, highly unlikely. A rehash is a rehash, wether it's parody or not.
How about in the 30s when concentration camps weren't known, and people that ran those businesses didn't have a clue as to what their product might have been used for until it was too late?
The difference being that this is not the thirties, and we have sufficent knowledge of what china is doing and has recently done to nullify your "but how can they know" argument.
By supporting china, and doing business in china, you support censorship and gross human rights violations.
so instead of filtering news why not just put an open proxy for them so they can visit those news site. Because the viagra, drug and nigerian spams would congest it so badly the minute it was up, the average chinese could never hope to use it!
Granted that there isn't a whole lot of integrity to be found in the realm of publicly traded businesses, but part of the excitement around google was the hope that they, having seen the follies of the dot-com fiasco, would be different.
But, instead, at almost the first sign of controversy, google considers the loss of a market above the need to maintain the integrity of their search results.
Why waste all the extra effort when you can just use a login already made for you? Mostly, I was thinking because inevitably whenever someone posts a username/password to a site like that on/., someone decides to be an asshole and change the password.
If that happens, they can fire up a quick throw away account using mailinator.
I'm not an instant gratification type of person. I easily delt with the long queues in WinMX, but eDonkey's are obscene.
But the morons cry: "DUR THIS ISNT A LEECHER NETWORK"
Well, fuck you for wanting me to upload 50 gigs of shit with my 15Kb upstream before I can pull down a 200MB episode of Penn&Teller's Bullshit, when I can just go find a torrent on Suprnova, or pull it off of Fasttrack, or pull it off WinMX, or Gnutella2 (which is flooded with fake files being hosted by a hojillion simarily named dummy accounts).
So yeah, eDonkey sucks. Use something else. If you're using windows, I'd suggest giving Ares a look.
warning, I haven't tried finding videos on it, so you're on your own wrt that.
the combination of ftp and knowing the right people worked before, it works still,
zOMG YUO KNOW teh RYT P33plee!!! can I otuch you?? j00 @r3 teh net.rocksatr!!!111
Fucking jackass. MOST of us don't "know the right people", basically period. We have lives to lead in the real world (you know, the one with the 'sun'? never heard of it? why am I not surprised.) This doesn't leave us with any signifigant amount of time to meet and greet teh 31337 just so we can hear some really shitty folk music.
So, ten years from now, j00 and the other nerds will still be passing around ftp logins to access 'non-copyright' (read: total shit ameteur warblings) material, while the rest of us will have moved forward and found someway to influence the p2p model towards a more progressive and fair-use friendly paradigm.

So, what will you do for your fun when all the forums in the world die because you and your ilk persist in making them unpleasant places to be?
For the 8 years I've been on the web, usenet has been a wholly unpleasent place to be. Yet, oddly enough, people still read it and post to it.
As long as we have people, and the technology to creat them; we'll always have forums. Usenet teaches us that, if nothing else.
How about:
You're a sucker for buying this peice of shit at all!
Can we say SHITCOCK?!?!!

Hey, if it's good enough for you to get your OS there in the first place...why not?
The problem being that practically speaking; you cannot shut yourself off from the media. Even if, as I do, you
Don't watch tv
Don't listen to the radio
Only listen to music you, yourself like (RIAA or otherwise)
Only get your news from NPR
You are _still_ bombared with crap whenever you go into your local store and when you go to work. God help you if you carpool.
