    I mean, in any realistic sense. The "winds" may be changing, but I'd say that the RIAA has invested enough cash into it's political and corporate infrastructure to weather any "storm".

    In short, the RIAA isn't going anywhere. But pirating, warezing script kiddies most certainly are...

    The point is that WinZip will open gzip'd dox, whereas I'm sure WinXP won't, although I haven't tried it.

    I have, it won't. I had to download gzip386.exe from ftp.gnu.org

    I think this could be neat if:

    A)if this could be used to set up, create and manipulate ufs/ffs partitions on your computer. (I know, highly unlikely)

    B)If the next step was to create windows binaries of the NetBSD system (to replace their GNU counterparts)

    Hell, it's neat regardless! Next, we need to have the guys at LFS add cygwin compatibility so I can truly build a linux from scratch!

    I take exception to that. While there are some geeky things which I like [alt.oses], I do not program, I am not an 'administrator', I do not work in the IT field.

    Basically, I consider myself an desktop user, albeit an advanced one [since my desktops alternate between XP and xfce on VMWare. ;)].

    Btw, I'm a windows user (at least ATM) who dislikes both KDE and GNOME.

    Point being; be careful with them assumptions and generalisations!

    Actually, I have a local copy of that saved which I read through from time to time.

    It is encouraging that the problem is being thought out; I don't know that the legal aspects can be over come (as someone already pointed out, many of the technical ones aready have been).

    I'm referring to the (often times dodgy) legal infrastructure that is in place on an ISP level to monitor your activities for p2p or whatever activity.

    It's not accessible to the people calling for an alternative to the commercialised internet.

    Also, to think the issue is simply a matter of "feeling elitist" is to completely miss the point. It's not about being 31337; it's about taking back our privacy, and taking control over our *own* net experience, instead of being passively spoon-fed by the major corporations.

    How? (without violating FCC regulations, among others)

    What about privacy and encryption?

    What is to keep the corporations from snuffing the second one too?

    Who is going to come up with the technical methodology and how do you believe this will be implemented?

    Hell, I'm just an end user, and even I can see the futility of just wishing for a second internet. We had the one shot, and for a mixture of different reasons, we blew it.

    It's my opinion that there won't be a second chance, though I would desperately love to be proven wrong.

    After the whole sdem incident, I have a question.

    After someone has proven that they are willing to abuse their 'skills' to settle a personal vendetta, why should anyone in their right mind trust them? To put it more generically, after some one in the 'security community' crosses over the line, how do they come back from that. Or do they?

    I lurked in trolltalk at the time, and I remember the whole thing clearly. Speaking just for myself, if I were to make the decisions about which tools were to be used in my company, nmap would be on my blacklist.
