I agree. I still do a lot of my server troubleshooting on the Usenet, and I read rec.music.phish from time to time. Works fine for me.
alt.fan.james-bond is still a fine ng with a high s/n ratio. I think Usenet has gotten better since web boards became common, as that's where more of the idiots go. As fewer people use Usenet, the spam quotient has been decreasing, too.
you can't say that if you don't hold up your end of the agreement, that the other person gets to kill you
Of course, the assisted suicide debate offers an interesting view on this issue, as going to Dr. Kevorkian is essentially signing a contract where (as a condition of the contract) he kills you.
I spent an ungodly amount of time getting peng to work on my step-brother's system, and I tell you, the build and configuration process was designed by morons. WTF is with needing to be root to *compile* the POS????
Maybe someone will take the GPL'd codebase and turn it into a./configure; make; make install type of thing...
You are correct that only Sun has standardized Java, but the parent post you replied to was talking about JavaScript (nee LiveScript), which is standardized by ECMA.
De Juris standards don't mean squat. I'll take De facto every day.
Considering that Microsoft is spending megabucks on advertising.Net to PHBs (that 1 degree of separation bullshit), I'd say it's almost certain that C# and.Net will be de facto and de juris standards. Sad but true.
There's an AM station in Denver that, at night, advertises they're heard in something like 35 states, 2 Canadian provinces and Mexico!
That's nothing.
Boston has several stations with significant reach.
WBZ (1030 AM), being one of the earliest radio stations in the US aims their transmissions south and west and has a clear channel; there is not one other station east of the Rockies which broadcasts on 1030 at night. My father was once able to listen to the Celtics every night during his brief exile to southern Mississippi.
The old WHDH (850 AM), being started in Gloucester and with a heavy audience of fishermen, aims their signal north and east. Every once in a while, they'd get phone calls from Dublin, or Glasgow, or Reykjavik, or Norway.
Of course, Red Hat and Mandrake have both decided to make metacity the GNOME window manager.
I still dislike Fred Crozat's (Mandrake's soel GNOME guy... oddly he does a better job with GNOME than Mandrake's KDE team with KDE) decision on that matter....
Not quite the same thing, but

Various people in the private capital business (sort of like venture capital, but they have no interest in taking the companies public for the foreseeable future) have swooped in, swallowing up various startups while the values are depressed and doing what consolidation they can, while keeping them alive till the tide comes back in.

I just heard some sad news on talk radio - Horror/Sci Fi writer Stephen King was found dead in his Maine home this morning. There weren't any more details. I'm sure everyone in the Slashdot community will miss him - even if you didn't enjoy his work, there's no denying his contributions to popular culture. Truly an American icon.
I've been looking for a good free ARM emulator/debugger combo (as UMass teaches assembly language using ARM). I've been stuck coding in vim through ssh, cp'ing it through samba to the lab boxen, and running it there. It's not optimal...
I'm planning to start testing 2.5 once it's in feature freeze.

You fucking idiot.

Read the fucking post.

You do realize how many Slashdot readers have been waiting their whole lives to hear those six magic words?
They just found 100 varieties of Frenchmen in Sri Lanka.
Those are shortwave, which isn't quite the normal commercial AM broadcasting...

The solution then, is to fix Sawfish. Metacity doesn't offer half the features that Sawfish does.

Is his estate going to a web startup hospice?
I note that the reports are of the fireballs landing near Boulder. Does this mean that Mork from Ork has arrived?
Nanoo Nanoo!
[For those young whippersnappers who don't watch TV land, the popular TV show Mork and Mindy, starring Robin Williams, was set in Boulder]
[I'm too lazy to do the cut and paste]
Hmmm...

Doesn't gcc compile for ARM?
The next question is, is the BREW SDK gcc-clean?
Perhaps none moreso than Metallica (aka E/M Ventures and Creeping Death Music).
Do us all a favor, nogoodmonkey, and look through tps12's comment history.
Do you think that YHJBT?
Admittedly, tps12 is truly a master of the art...
...backbone providers have announced plans to pay people minimum wage to hold hands with each other as a backup backbone.
What about SexKitten?
Unfortunately, his OS is dead, because *BSD is dead.
Hmmm... I propose that, in order to demonstrate the power of Slashdot, we slashdot SARA into oblivion!
