"Unlike such competing operating systems as Linux and Mac OS X, Windows XP allows users to play DVDs (Digital Versatile Discs) containing movie data. This eliminates the need for an external DVD player, an additional expense."Uhh, excuse me? with linux they can ofcorce be played with DeCSS, however due to certan stupid laws in the US...big companys stomped on that, It's still around tho, if you look. 2nd, MacOS X will beable to play DVDs before Windows XP is out (version 10.1 has DVD player support) or, you can always use an older version of the MacOS (anywhere from system 8 to system 9.2.1) Most people using OS X will dual boot like this, due to the lack of compatibility between the two OSes Oh, and while I have a DVD drive and player in almost all of my computers, I still have an external DVD player. Why you ask? there are some things that you cant do from a computer, such as: Remote control, DTS/Dolby Digital 5.1 surround [over a fiber optic cable], component video out [to a bigscreen TV]...the list goes on and on, but...you get the point
"Microsoft also includes Microsoft Internet Explorer 6, the latest version of the world's favorite Internet browser. " Didnt I hear something about a small redmond based company crushing netscape and other browser alternitives with anti-competitive monopolistic practices? Oh yeah, that was Microsoft with Internet Explorer.
"Microsoft Internet Explorer complies with such Internet standards as CSS (Cascading Style Sheets), XHTML (eXtensible HyperText Markup Language), XML (eXtensible Markup Language), and P3P (Platform for Privacy Preferences). " Huh? MS is widely known for changeing standerds so they don't work in other browsers. I like konqueror, as it has no problems with any sites that dont use extensive flash/java or other nasty bandwidth intensive stuff. Only works for KDE tho, you might not like it.
"Is Microsoft Windows XP worth $200? "No. Every review I saw of it said it sucked. I've used other versions of windows. They sucked too. What am i really paying for with that $200? a few years more hassle with Worms, Viruses, bugs, bsod's and the like? or am I paying for an intigrated MP3 player with optional cup holder? what if i like my old one? can i still use that?
"Will Linux users steal it so that they can play games and DVDs? " Don't know. I know I wont. I'm just fine with my stolen copy of 98 for that.
"That is why Product Activation will help Microsoft recoup all of its piracy losses. " ooh, MS lost money to the evil p1r4t3s! ooh! I'm shaking in my little pants! MS makes BILLIONS a year. That's for an overpriced, buggy, insecure joke of an OS. That's pretty damned good if you ask me. Oh, and Product Activation is easily hacked too, or so I've read.
This is just a PC with a TV-OUT on it's video card. And a "nice" VisualBasic Menu interface. Okay, fine, it can be used with a widely avalible gamepad syle controler. Oh yeah, he's got some [not so] nice plexi work there too. The thing just runs windows. Come to think of it, It's much like the xbox Only with a worse video card, and more plexi. No news here, people. move along.
Do you have proof to back this up? If we make 'em, and they get smarter then us, chances are, they'll behave the way we tought em. Also, rember, systems go from a state of order to disorder, not the other way around. I think this applys to Humans and AI's as much as it does to anything else. (Meaning that people are intrinsicly what you might call "evil")
As a kid, I always had legos around (for my 1st birthday my parents got me a big tub of duplos, the bigger version of legos) By that time (1986) Most of em were kits, so, I'd build what was on the box. I got tired of that after about 10 min, and first "improved" it, by changeing everything around, and keeping the same theme, However, I'd tire of that quickly as well. So into the big bin it would go. After a while, I had HUDGE tubs of lego and duplo bricks (probly 100k bricks or more) I would build vast planets over months and months. A few space ships to start out with, then some people, then spaceports, then houses, and roads, and statues, untill I had used up almost every brick (or my little brother came in, godzilla style and wrecked it all) That reminds me...I need to get a bucket of bricks for my desk, for while I'm waiting for compiles, friends, downloads, or when I'm just really bored. What I think I was trying to say, is legos have been a big part of this kids life
What will this do to AMD's fame in the overclocking field? I bought my Athlon Tbird cause 1) it was cheap (3x the price it is now..grr) 2)I'd seen nice benchmarks with it vs. the p3 and the then infant p4 3) you could OC the living daylights out of it Will we now overclock the model number? that doesnt seem right. I think that it would be a bad move for amd to make it hard for the overclockers, as many, many overclockers use athlon/duron systems (i'm one of them...mine doubles as a BBQ) I was really looking forward to getting a 1.5-1.7GHz palamalto and overclocking it to around 2GHz (watercooled) and getting killer framerates in whatever i desided to play, but...if i cant overclock, i may stick with my tbird 1GHz@1.1111Ghz...cause overclocking is half the fun
It seems this only alows you to stream from your computer with their software, and not from Shoutcast-style streaming servers. if it could do that...I'd buy/make one. you dont know how much i hate it when my streams stop because my computer froze/kernel paniced/bsod'ed/caught fire. too bad the site seems to have been/.'ed now...
"Now; if the FBI can go into my house, and they have a search warrant, then they can open my safe. The method they use to find the combination of my safe isn't very important."
Yes, they can go into your house with a proper search warrent. and, the method they use to find the combination to your safe is important. for example, if you tell you friend over the phone, and they dont have a wiretapping warrent, that's an illegal way to open the safe. or, for example..if they put a gun to your head and told you to open your safe. that would be illegal too. however the 1st one is closer to what was done here.
Dude, they do use IBM chips. PowerPC chips were developed by the AIM (apple, IBM, motorotla), and based on IBM's POWER chip alliance. The 601 to g3 chips are made by both Motorola and IBM. The new G4 chip is made only by IBM due to disagreements between the three companys. The GameCube however uses a Gekko chip, that is based off (iirc) the g3 series PowerPC Chip (it might be another series of PPC, i dont rember). And, if you paied attention...the "PowerPC" name and logo are (tm) IBM. I dont know why apple took the logo off of their computers, but they have. I can only assume they'll go back on at a later date.
P.S. Apple mostly uses Maxtor and Segate drives, due i beleive to lower prices. I have not seen a Mac with an IBM drive in it (that i didnt put there) in a long time.
You shouldnt beable to sue for what someone MAY have done with a product that they got. You can't do it with guns, and you shouldnt beable to do it with MP3's. My guess would be that the vast majority of the people who got the MP3's just downloaded them to their MP3 folder, along with their napster downloads...not knowing that they were being shared. A good deal of these people were probly also on 56k's or less. Meaning that the MP3 didn't go much further then them. In any case, sueing someone for something they [make/sell/give away/etc] because it can be used in a way that is in someone's mind vaguely criminal. What the hell ever happened to fair-use?
what kind of payload do these things take? are we talking 2 or 3 pounds? 50 pounds? cause, i could see earth based use for things like this if they could cary some cargo also..they seem to roll...where is the camera pointing? and what exactly is to keep the equipment from getting shock damage? it sounds like this thing would get shook up pretty good...
NASA's faster! cheaper! mindset has gotten us some nice stuff, this could be more of it.
One day, people will STOP TRUSTING MICROSOFT WITH ANYTHING!$$@#@ I'm sorry...but, when MS isnt selling all your info to someone, they let the hackers have it... has MS sued the finders of this backdoor yet?
"It is going to be the next user interface, the last user interface," Dunietz said, explaining that it will replace the mouse, computer pointing devices and the Microsoft Windows environment"
Good, someone else who wants to rid the world of MS
Like, mandrake, mabye? I was having hell learning linux till I got mandrake, and now in 2 days, i've all but tossed out windows and the MacOS (excecept for development) Konqueror is one of the nicest browsers i ever used, and i havent bothered switching my mail over, so I cant say the same for kmail yet. Multiple desktops still confuse me, but I'll get it one of these days.... Mandrake rocks, imho....
It's things like this, the DMCA and other such horse shit that make me hate living in the US. I'm really starting to think about moving somewhere else. Can anyone name some places where such nonsence isnt happening? English speaking, 1st world countries prefered.
It seems to me, with all these very intrusive, "my ad can can conter advertise your ad" programs...eventualy, people will give up. I mean, if i know any ad i put will have a gator ad ontop of it, then a top text ad over that, then the next spyware-fileshareing-p2p-advertisement-dealie will put something oner that, and so forth...what's the point in putting the ad in the first place? ads are just getting LESS effective as time goes on (due in part to things like this?) The only way i see to make money is subscription based services. However, we've had years of the web giving us free things (news, p0rn, warez, linux, whatever) I dont think most people will take too well to paying for content
IMHO, the only effectave ad's would be those that took over a users computer for a period of time (like an ad on tv) But, I for one would not stand for that...When i use a computer, i do more than one thing at once, and i dont like ads telling me where to look.... Banners, I can stand...popups/popunders I'll get used...The only reason I dont block them is to send a message to the people who buy the ads "I'll look, but I wont click"
Multi-billion dollar mess up?

$1200 Cheap!

It sounds to me like MS is doing something REALLY stupid. If i'm gonna buy an Xbox (i might...) I want to choose what i get. Mabye I dont want the same software or hardware they want to bundle (the case in any bundle) Anyone else think this is MS's ego biting MS in the ass? They are used to people bowing to them. Will it be so in the console market? I think not. While MS has a good looking peice of hardware, if they try to overcharge me for stuff I dont want. I'm sorry. I dont care if you're god. I'll stick with nintendo, who I know is good. but, then again...It's hard to know how stupid people really are...
I don't understand why anyone would bother with a P4, ESPECALY with slower ram. I'll take an Athlon and DDR (or pc133) system any day of the week. P4's are slow, power hungry, hot, etc. whereas athlongs are...oh wait, all the same things. never mind
AFIK, FCC Class B certification is nothing all that special. I could be wrong, but I dont think the FCC tests class b devices...you just follow the guidelines and slap on a sticker I'm probly not right tho (can anyone back me up?)
I dont know about everyone else here (AC's aside) but, if i want to say something, I feel it should be a right not only to choose what I want to say, how I want to say it but also I want to have the choice of not revealing my identity. Why? Good question. often the case is I'm afraid of corprate bullying - just as the yahoo posters seemingly were. Another reason would be to try and get an idea into the heads of people who disagree with it. Often, on/. I've seen that when you dont have a specific user to yell at, comments that would normally get ignored (Pro-DMCA for example) sometimes get a second chance But, I really feel to have true freedom of speech, you need the freedom to be anonoymous.
PS: Taco, I'm all for Freedome, but we need much more freedom before we can fight the freedome war
