  1. Re:A good thing? on Filesharing Up 10% After RIAA Threatens Users · · Score: 1

"Removing dependance on full-length physical media will do a couple of good things. First it will force the industry and artists to put out more quality tracks instead of relying on a couple radio tracks to sell a disc made mostly of filler. Second, the consumer will no longer get stuck with a lousy disc."

Funny thing, I own approximately one cd from a record company which is a member of the RIAA, while all my others are not. On all of these cds, no songs really stand out as being the best or one that would be played on the radio (if these songs were ever played on the radio) because the cds are filled with great songs. I was gonna make a point about how big name bands tend to put out so much more crap that do smaller, lesser-known bands, in relation to how it seems to me that big name bands get into it for the money more often while most lesser-known bands play because they like to play, and how if big name bands focussed on playing better music maybe they'd start making more money too if that's their goal.

A child by your own statement is not a full citizen thus lacks the rights that entails, thus the child in fact does not own any money. All of the child's posessions are owned by the parent, therefore, if the child manages to find the $40 to go and buy the violent video game, the child is spending the parrents' money. I ask you: is it not the parrents' responsibility to know where and how their money is being spent? As it is the parrents' money being spent on the games, they are granting implied consent toward the purchase.

parents have a right to raise their children as they see fit by not letting them play video games

You seem to imply that every parrent in America wishes their children to not be exposed to violent games. I'm not sure how different my upbringing was from that of others, but I will use it as an example. I distinctly remember playing games such as Doom and Duke Nukem 3D with my father when I was rather young (between 9 and 12). My parrents as well as the parrents of friends would watch myself and friends play all sorts of violent video games without ever telling us "There's too much blood in this game, turn it off!"

Let me also point to something that contains as much, if not more violence than many video games, and it is also available to no cost of the child: Televison. If it becomes a crime to sell violent video games to children, should it not also become a crime to broadcast violent material through television? Children have much easier access to this, and it shows real people dying, not a jumble of polygons that looks like a person.

although I thought that asbestos problems had been mostly solved by removing it from all buildings, etc

My High School was built in 1953, and the asbestos in it have never been removed. In fact, a few days ago I went wandering with a stage crew friend and she showed me all the neat places like up above the auditorium ceiling (200 or so feet above the ground, much fun) and there were all sorts of comforting "DANGER: ASBESTOS" signs up there. And its not like this area is shut off from the rest of the school; just walk through a doorway, climb up two ladders and you're there. I know that a couple rooms in this area of the school have been closed off and students told they are definitly not allowed to be there any more due to the asbestos in the air, though. But yeah, asbestos is definitly still a problem, even in public buildings. (and schools!)

If there is no "immediate danger" with the asbestos, they don't go about removing it from buildings. It is left there until they have to remove it, which I think my school is (finally) going to do pretty soon when the start rennovating.
