... PSP will probably marginalize Nintendo's handhelds.
What the fuck are you talking about? I love the anti-Nintendo sentiment expressed by absolute idiots all over the internet. Why not wait until we see what actually fucking happens instead of "OMG teh PSX pwnz0red teh n64, psp must kill teh big N lololol!!1111". For some objective analysis of this meme-esque bullshit (I admit this comment is neither objective nor non-kneejerk), why not checkoutthesearticles.
YES YES YES. The only people who seem to be up in arms about file-sharing are the huge media companies. Many recording artists have said that they don't care if people share their stuff, some even saying they thought it helped sales. If some industry thinks we need tighter restrictions on some bullshit law, they can pay for the consequences.
I think that this is the funniest thing about Microsoft. They tout their perpetually-[insert bad thing here] operating system and expensive software while they really should be pushing their pretty good mice and keyboards. Dunno about the Xbox though, I generally prefer my consoles not randomly catching on fire.
One problem with your argument is that the Internet is more or less a public thing, originally funded by the US government. Another problem is the design of the Internet itself. Many different companies and people with different policies and wants/needs are giving the OK to be connected to each other, and this complicates things like "quality of service" and "acceptable use". There is more to it than just paying money.
Sometimes I have to use IE from time to time due to lack of support for the browser I'm using.
This is why I exclusively use a non-IE browser (and the fact that I'm in Linux most of the time, but I digress...). Getting a stranglehold on the web and forcing people to use proprietary applications to exchange information is like adding new words and conventions to a language and charging people to use them.
And Linux distros like Ubuntu certainly haven't used that phrase to describe their OS.
You can honestly never say you've heard a hacker say something like: "...and I really like this package because it Just Works (tm)..." ??!?!?! People say this all the time! I won't re-link to the apple pages, as that's been done ad nauseum in this thread...
Man, that would be tough. Would we still have to distribute copies of the GPL with all products sold? And if I use a GPL toilet, do I need to save "samples" for people who want to make derivative works?
Why didn't he help improve (or fork) Subversion so it would suit his needs better instead of starting from scratch?
This is like saying "why didn't you guys improve that cardboard box so it works more like a skyscraper?". While it's true that both of these objects can have things put inside them, they are very different.
Or consider this: If I download a TV show which is only broadcast overseas (or broadcast overseas before broadcast locally) with BitTorrent, I'm also guilty according to this law. Even though the show would be broadcast for free if/when it does come to my area.
Nah man, you're just time-shifting a few months into the future. You'll be OK.
I'm sorry but I really feel that Congress should be spending time protecting flesh and blood people rather than paper created "persons".
Yeah, there's a problem, though. The owners of these paper-created persons are the ones who finance and keep in power the members of Congress. So basically, unless people become more involved in their government, we're pretty much fucked.
Yeah, the film and other media industries DO support many small business, but this is usually BEFORE release of the media. Once it has been released, 99% of the damage is being done to the copyright holders, i.e. the movie studios.
Yeah, I agree. I bought GTA: San Andreas when it came out, and while it was fun for a while, I'm now playing through some old Metroid and Zelda games again. I'd rather play FUN games than worry about my OMG H4RDC0R3 image as uber-gamer or some stupid shit. The funny thing is, when I ask my Xbox-owning friends what their favorite game of ALL TIME is, they seem to say something like Zelda...
If Exxon put this at every one of their stations they could supply internet to travelers to pretty much everyone within range of an interstate. That's a lot of people.
You've obviously never driven through North Dakota:)

So does the proposal have cute little cartoons to illustrate its points?
</wishing for the return of Crunchly>
And it will break 200000 other sites.

Um, I didn't read anything like that in the press release, but I wouldn't be surprised if they "allocated" some of the existing work...
Duke still sucks!
Oh wait, wrong site...
So if I throw my CD case down the hall, do I set a data-transfer record?
Seriously though, read TFA, it's pretty funny.
... but if using Perl, 1 comment per 2 LOC.
Um, this depends on how you write Perl code. I'm guessing they had a bad experience, something like $(*#&%@#%(*&%@#%(*&#@%(*@&#%)
There's several issues with Debian stable.
1. Hardware support. Unlike Windows, you can't drop in a 3rd party driver, you need to upgrade the whole kernel. This is by design (no stable ABI).
So you're saying other Linux distros have a stable ABI when you upgrade a kernel??
hey - they make ok hardware :p

Did anyone read the bill before posting about it?
/. reaction?
Wait, you expected any different than the standard

then is all of the world under the GPL?

Ah, but you see, many of the words in the english language are actually tied to specific historical events:
the - first used by Bob the blacksmith of london in 1398.
it - Shakespeare.
a - monkeys.

If this actually happens (which it hopefully won't), I'll definitely be donating heavily to the EFF and encouraging them to file suit against the gov.
Just look at PS2 and Xbox. They've outsold Gamecube by a large margin in the US.
Bullshit. The PS2 has outsold both the Cube and Box combined by a large margin, but the Xbox HAS NOT outsold the Cube by a "large margin" in the US.
