This is not always true, plus it allows for some people to get their hands into the project that have no business writing code in the first place.

There is one other thing most open source projects lack, a solid direction of where it is going, and a timeline of goals to get there. Sure you can write the perfect application to do a specific task, but if you take too long getting there someone else is going to do it first, and charge money for theirs. If you want or need it now, you will end up paying for it one way or another.

With the rate some people upgrade their desktop I predict Windows Vista will still be the highest used OS in 10 years from now, I mean how many people do you know that are still running Windows 98? I know quite a few myself.

This should probably be modded down...

It still has a long way to go, over the last weekend I spent several hours trying to recover data from a backup (mysqldump) because of dataloss due to mysql database corruption on server version 4.0.20.

Sure it seems ok if you want to run a small, fast, dynamic website that doesn't contain any real valueable data.

For serious data needs, in my projects I'll choose Sql-Server over mysql any day of every week. I'm not saying Sql-server is the best choice, but its ahead of mysql when it comes to data integrity.

Isn't sad that what "We the People" built for "We the People" isn't being used for the benefit of "We the People" but instead the benefit of greedy executives at corporations who want to control "We the People" and have bought out the majority of the government that "We the People" voted in.
