Reminds me of something quite sad I use to do... If ever I saw someone doing a broadsheet crossword (or found one completed later), I'd take 5 minutes glancing at the answers. Then on the way home I use to purposefully walk over to the newstand, buy the same paper and then as nonchanantly(sic?) as possible fill in the answers as fast as possible - preferably in front of someone with the same paper..
0) Make sure you're running a supported OS (e.g. RH AS 4)
1) Go to oracle's website
2) Download oracle 10g xe lite
3) rpm --install....rpm
Done.
It's that simple - and you get the html management interface, htmldb do create web based apps (which I can only say is *phenomenally* powerful), and all the other bits like sqlplus. Admittedly, I had a bit of fun getting DBI::Oracle working for perl access, but - as always - google helped to nail that one.
I had a bad experience and then a very good one with rentacoder.com - basically I had this pain in the ass problem to do with VOIP and I couldn't get to the bottom of it so at the end of my tether I thought - what the hell - I'll drop 100 USD on rentacoder to see if there's someone who wants to take up the challenge. Anyway, I got a couple of bids and eventually I gave the problem to this chap who seemed to know what he was doing. FOUR WEEKS LATER he's only logged into the box once - so I didn't feel that bad when I asked the rentacoder arbitrators to review the 2 week overdue project (or has he put it "ratted me out"). So my options were then either to get the refund from the escrow account ( they do this to prove that you have the funds - but they won't release it until you're 100% happy) or try again - ah what the hell, why not eh?... sooo I put the project up again and this new chap offers to fix it within 24 hours - I immediately accept his bid ( can't be bothered waiting till the end of the "auction") and send him the IP and login details (this is at about 11pm). By 10am the next day, the dude has fixed exactly what I needed fixing and come up with a number of suggestions about other improvements I could make. Additionally, I've now put approx 800 USD worth of other coding + configuration stuff his way since then.
My advice:
Start with something small - i.e. around the 100 USD mark. By all means say that it's part of a larger project soon to be up for bidding, but make sure the project tests several areas in which you need experience and expertise, but is relatively straightforward and simple for people who actually know what they're doing. This will hopefully attract the attention of the coders you want and hopefully make it easy for you to weed out the wannabes.
Ok - I feel quite qualified to join in here as I have both a 3G phone (Sharp 902) from vodaphone and also the video ipod. Now I don't know what others have experienced with 3G TV but I can tell you that at BEST (i.e. full strength 3G signal - stationary) it passes off as "barely acceptable" - i.e. you might just bother to watch it if you had no other option and you NEEDED to watch something. The moment you add in factors like (for example) moving on a train ( where I have been doing my research on this matter whilst on the way to work), then the quality drops significantly as you move between base stations. Add that to the occasional drop to GPRS and the whole thing becomes a bit of a farce. Oh yes, and lastly a new handset feature I call "pocket warmer" - so god only knows how much battery its churning through. My all time record for continuous TV watching is around 6 minutes at the moment - before the signal dropping or whatever. I don't know if any of you remember those comical days when people use to have to move a coathanger around in an aerial socket to try to get the best picture - but I think we've metaphorically taken a step back to those times with 3G TV.
With the Ipod, however, its possible to watch a show "quite" comfortably. I say that as I was watching Sin City (great flick) on Sunday and I noticed I'd watched the first hour with the thing about 40cm from my nose. Dang did I notice the eye strain when I looked away... So... at BEST I would only recommend the video ipod for shows no more than 30-40 minutes and if you do subject yourself to them ( mandatory H&S tip) look away into the distance frequently to relax your eyes

uh oh... guess my chars Rhubarb and Custard could be in for some trouble then....
I downloaded the BT. It was phenomenally sad. Think the words Microsoft, experience, media, consumers and all those horrid things. If you dont believe me watch the vid. It is truly one big commercial. Well done MS.
My wife has since utilised the printer since she started teaching with quite a high throughput of printing - the thing that has been putting me off is the sheer audacity of the manufacturers to charge so damn much for ink - thanks for the link coz I may well be buying me (her?) that system in the new year... You should'a been on a referral system!!
... Exactly. Pay me $x M per year (where x > 1) and I'll happily bash my head against a rock 8 hours a day for a year or two. Hell. Might even put some overtime in too...
the current co2 level is around 400 ppm and is currently rising by approx 2ppm per year. Does that mean that in 499,800 years the whole planet will reach 1,000,000 ppm of Co2 and therefore just be a big ball of gas ?
err... most motherboards support wake-on-lan already . If the m/board has built in ethernet then no h/ware mods are required, otherwise it's normally just a thin (2 wire?) cable that triggers a remote on event. All you need is the mac address to send the magic packet and you can get your machine to switch on remotely. Google phrases : "wake on lan" and "magic packet".
On a side note, I think it would have been a more interesting read if he'd mixed in the plots of Army of Darkness and Debbie Does Dallas.
Err. He did. It's called "Dallas does Darkness".

surely the point of PVRs / Tivo etc is to miss the adds. Or am I new here ?

Sorry - My mate Aaron A Aardvark would have beaten ya to it (props to 2000AD).

or do I just not quite get it
"it is easier to get forgiveness than to get permission"
Now that is a quote worth remembering....
Ok I found that funny, but no mod points (since the thread of death) so please consider this a virtual +1 from me .
Write to richardagreen (at) gmail.com and I'll send you one.
I think the string was used in an apache (openssl) exploit, but I find the string DEADBEEF repeated quite useful when I need to invent a hex string.
I was going to write that...
mods - its funny write ?
... for those interested in cheap GPSs, I sell them on my website - only 82 quid 25p for the etrex which is a great little beastie if you ask me.

Did you notice that the "fixing" program was called "ChangeVLKey2600.vbs" ...
and you're in for a surprise.
What would be really interesting would be an informal contest to see who could store the most data in a single page of paper.
