  1. Re:So who makes "good" hard drives? on IBM Bails Out of the Hard Drive Market · · Score: 1

I've owned 4 different WD drives in the past 3 years. None have yet died or otherwise corrupted data. I still have only one, but all of the others are still alive and working in friends' systems.

  2. Rogue Spear on Mods: "Lifeblood of Gaming Industry"? · · Score: 1

This game was my first introduction to serious modifications. Absolutely everything could be modded. Weapons, skins, maps, sounds, text, you name it. It made the game *much* more enjoyable over an extended period of time, and eventually Red Storm even released (unsupported) an exporter to work with 3D StudioMax, so you could make your own models or maps from scratch!!

If I had known anything about 3D Studio, I would have made a map that was my actual mid-town neighborhood at the time, and then given it to all my friends to play. I always thought that would be incredibly fun, and surreal as well!

Always wanted to shoot a grenade launcher or light machine gun off my balcony...

  3. Current technology on Burrough's Martian Tales Optioned · · Score: 3, Interesting

//Jacks told Daily Variety that three of the best-known books (which include "Gods of Mars" and "The Warlord of Mars") are likely to be made into films of a scope "akin to 'The Lord of the Rings' and 'Star Wars,' but were impossible to make before, because CGI (computer technology) wasn't there."//

So, bearing this statement in mind, are there any stories out there which still cannot be effectively made into movies due to lack of technology?

Heh, it's actually from a semi-older episode of Saturday Night Live. The premise was a Japanese sitcom "for wacky American people!"

I know this is obscure, because I can't find a single thing about that sketch on the Internet. I just remember it being really funny.

    Goddamnit.

Oh well, I'll just have to download twice as much now, before this goes into effect, that way I'll get my money's worth for a little while.

Notice how the article says that TW won't care if heavy users leave because of this.

    That's such a great attitude.

  7. Distributed Computing on Kazaa on Reflections on Brilliant Digital: Single Points of 0wnership · · Score: 2, Insightful

Ok, from what I understand, Kazaa is going to be attempting to get their users to give up their spare CPU cycles to help drive advertisements and other income-based projects for Kazaa?

Ok, not only would this concept be likely considered unwelcome even by casual Kazaa users, but think of all the other possibilities for an already heavily established (as those things go) P2P app like Kazaa...

In other words, they could try to get their users to share a distributed computing project working towards, say, the cure of a deadly disease or other medical project, then give ( or sell, which would be more likely) the results to whatever foundation would actually be able to use the data?

That way they could make money, a name for themselves, and generally the rest of humanity a bit happier.

With the exception of the shady business practices of Rambus, I don't fully understand why Intel dropped RDRAM in the first place. In every benchmark that I saw circa 7-8 months ago, the huge amount of memory bandwidth present gave Intel one of it's only advantages over the corresponding AMD CPUs.

It couldn't have just been the prices either, because Intel obviously knows they're not going to win that race.

Maybe this sounds kind of silly, but the amount of commercials on actually keeps me from watching TV. They make me far more upset than the average person, I believe, mostly because they're so insulting.

    Three reasons to watch TV:

    1. The Simpsons

    2. NBA games

    3. The occasional Jackie Chan movie.

Other than that, the TV stays off, and the computer stays on.

Wouldn't it be hilarious if it really was going to work the way the article states in this paragraph? Put in your AOL CD, *poof*! your machine gets repartitioned and reformatted, in goes RedHat with the "everything" install option!

I bet at least a million people would just accept that at face value, too, and start using RedHat, never knowing that it's a different OS, and not just part of their AOL install.
