    When creative people work on making something new, they often enter a mental state where things just flow. This is a highly desirable state, both for the programmer themself and for the organisation that profits by their labors.

    This is grammatically incorrect. You are talking about a singular programmer, hence "himself/herself" and "his/her" labors. You would need to use "both for the programmers themselves..."

    It depends on the hegemonistic power at the time, doesn't it? In the time of Marco Polo, Venice was called the Suzhou of Europe (as in Suzhou, China - renowned for its canals/gardens). Now, Suzhou is known as the "Venice of the Orient."

    destroyed the last remnants of the Klamath language. (The Klamath is a tribe of native Americans along the border of Oregon and California). There was a project to document the entire language on a set of CD-ROM's, since the only person left alive did not have too many days left. After the CD-ROM's were recorded, 3 teens from the tribe stole the CD's and destroyed them for whatever reason. As a result, the Klamath language is now lost forever.

    I used to work in IT support/development for the State of Oregon. The management there are the same brilliant geniuses that bought something like 200 Pentium Pro Overclock chips for $200/each from our Holier-than-thou vendor while the street value was closer to $80-100. To this day, they are still sitting on top of a crate in an unused conference room. They will use ANYTHING that their vendor (think Volt) tells them to use, and pay what they tell them to pay. This legislation won't get very far.

    You have to be careful what you compare the ``%'s'' to. If you take a field like engineering, which few women enter, you won't find 50.5% women, even though that's the percentage of women in the general population.

    This will be interesting to observe in a few years. For example, the Electrical Engineering department at the Univ. of Washington has a graduate program which is now half female.

    Most people would rather have the functionalities of MS OLE, where any random graph from Excel can be inserted into any other OLE-aware application. It's good that they can at least get people past the "looks" stage, but the core functionality must also be emulated if you want people to "not notice the difference."
