Maybe this idea also will work: integrate a mouseball in the bottom of a keyboard. get rid of the rubber thingies and a keyboard will slide. add some extra keys as mouse-buttons and hey-presto;)
True, nobody is saying i have to upgrade. and since i have an 166 i probably won't upgrade.
The thing that got me puzzled is this:
15 years ago - 286 - 256Kb of memory.
Word perfect 5.1.
now - Pentuim 500+ - 128Mb of memory.
MS-Word.
graphical options are improved, the userinterface is improved and the os has several advantages comparesd to DOS (where you had to install a printerdriver for each different program).
but gradually the os but also the programs have become less and less efficient. It's a way of thinking like "because it's possible" which makes programs less efficient, I guess. Where people used to think about efficienty, nowadays resources are freely available and you can do whatever you want.
Requirements: This BETA version of Winamp3 requires a Pentium II or higher class processor, 64MB of RAM (128MB recommended), and Windows 98 and higher (Windows 2000/XP Recommended).
I hope the Linux version has lower requirements. I really don't believe this. Winamp 2 runs on a P166. Where is the time that good software fitted on one 720 disk? (and would run on a 286)
"but a Microsoft exec said yesterday that the hugely successful worm attacks were due to 'tardy' sysadmins"
It's many many many times easyer to press 'SETUP' then it is to read a bugtraq every few days.
Maybe Microsoft qould change the setup procedure so you HAVE to read many pages before your system works. Atleast you've proven that you can read;)
Bit like Linux. Read and search for hours to get something working.
No. Just kidding, but the click-wait-and-beporoudofyourserver is also too easy. Last few weeks i've been probed by several MServers with the 'congratulated with your new server' screen as opening-screen. As I see it many of those servers are made by A: people who are curious about what it's like to have _their own_ server and B: install the server with illegal software and C: never have heared of 'patches' and 'upgrades'.

There was just one thing. I've reloaded the zdnet page many many times and every time a f***g Oracle banner poped up. Yeah, we know you're bigger. we also know MySQL is free and will run on my slowestt 486 with a maximum of 32Mb RAM:))
My computer is permanently commected to the internet or 'communicating' by the means of a netword-card. i think the difference in function between a modem and a network card is tuite small. so sollowing the line of thought: is my network card is functioning, it's not allowed to grab keys:)
This war and tewrrorist thing is NOT a US thing only. It's a western politics thing. I disaprove violence. i disaprove violent reactions. even though it's my own western politics.
simply because war feeds terrorism. it will pissoff more terrorists. sadly we've seen what pissed terrorists are capable of.
simply because revenge doesn't contribute to a solution. it's impossible to find and kill all terrorists. so killing simply is no solution.
I have the same problem with my Stoosh cd of Skunk Anansie. It's not in all cd-players that it won't play, but i've tried it in several cd-players... with the same result.
Strange way to force you to get mp3 from the interner.
There is always the D->A->D method. This is the way i ysed to make mp3 in the old days. use the sound-recorder to record a wav-file. the quality will do and i have my music and with the quality my desktop-speakers i won't hear the difference between the cd and a less-quality mp3:))
Sorry, i think it's naive to blame encryption.
picture this: everubody starts using snailmail again, but this time in the volumes of e-mail.
this would be very good for the economy, but as a side-effect it's absolutely impossible for FBI and other privacy-invading institutions to read all the mail.
Or would you like someone to open all snail mail, read it, copy it and put it in an archive manually??
by the way: there are two ways of backdoors.
one is adding an extra password in the software. this one is very easy to detect in open source software. the other is a mathemathical backdoor. making algorythems in such a way that you know where (mathematicly) to look for the password. this one is a lot harder to detect. while a lot is us can write code and debug it, making it bug free still is hard. how many programmers are also big mathematicians that will spend time to check the used algorythems??? not that many i'm affraid.
what really makes me worry are two things.
one is how dependent we become on the internet and computers in general.
the other is how a big company deals with this dependency
both a bike and a car are a means of transport so using a phone and the internet must also be the same and, more important, the same rules should apply to both examples.
This is getting interesting. It can take quite some years, but if you compare spaceflight with internet this comparison comes up: scientists build a fundation of the technology and once the basics are working and commercial companys step in, things will go faster.
I just hope that these companies are seeing a general interest in the technology. I would hate to see one company to monopolize space technology.
One of the good things about open source is the possibility to learn from mistakes that others made.
Let's start Open Security. Document all the security mistakes you know. From programming errors to mistakes in configurations.
This way everyone can learn from a hack.
Sooner or later some kiddy wil publish it anyway and sooner or later an other admin will make the same mistake.
So maybe someone can make a fully documented security-site?:)
Maybe this is getting off-topic, but i'll try to make it interesting.
The policies being adopted by the European Union and the United Nations are increasingly incompatible with the American Constitution.
There are more differences in culture and opinion. Hou about abortion, drugs and guns? I think on both sides of the ocean we face the same problems, we just deal with them differently. That isn't really strange I would think. We're talking about two continents with two different histories.
Consider this: the U in USA exists far longer than the U in EU. The laws in the different european countries are more or less the same, but still we're dealing with a lot of defferences. Some countries will use the Euro while others want to wait.
So is this a reason to say It is time we started realizing that these organizations are not our friends any more? Guess not. There are a lot of mutual interests between the USA and the EU. Just because there is a difference it doesn't mean someone (organisation) is scary or you can't be "friends" with them.
Cooperation is far more interesting and will result in better things than isolation (or 'giving up friendship'). How about 'global economy'.
This is a very impressive collection of photoshopped fossils, bacteria, clouds and other textures.
maybe I don't look at the right places, but references or coordinates are not to be found on this site.
Nevertheless the "pictures" with marvelous magnification of the mars-surface are nice to look at and dream about.
I was thinking about a site about how the martians make crop-circles. I'm looking for some photoshop-artists... anyone?
Maybe obsolete to mention, but surfing from this article I found some nice sites about vulcanos and calderas:

i'f i'm wrong, tell me why.

revenge or not. it's a prehistorical reaction for a super nation.
:(
is't was a terrible cowardly act to crash two planes into the wtc, but any, ANY war-like action isn't civilized either.
innocent people were killed on the 11th. innocent people will be killer in the next days.
the next days people will die for american and european principles. terrorists murdered on the 11th for their principles.
STOP MAKING THINGS WORSE! I'm ashamed to bvelong to a nation that reacts like this
War doesn't know winners.
Really. I hope Nimda wrechts the infected servers completely, deletes all data and spinns the hd's up to 50000 rpm.
;)
Well. Actually is doesn't have to be that bad, but what message has to be sent into this world TO GET THOSE DAMN SERVERS PATCHED?!
Of course mail all the webmaster-wannabies who's machines are infected should be spammed with the patches.
Dammit. It's just too simple to click SETUP.EXE and lay back without reading the F**^H^Hriendly manual.
LAST HINT: UPDATE, PATCH, REPARE and don't forget BACKUP!!!

The isp could bloch all traffic, but redirect all http traffic to a page which explains the situation and has one link to download a virus cleaner.

Oh, sorry. Also a second link with all the patches for his OS.
Hmm. maybe also an option to have Nessus attack his computer
