PHPsuexec is nice if it's a new server. If the server is already active it's kind of a pain to switch over and then make sure that everybody's permissions are set right.
Cpanel takes care of most of it automatically though. There's also mod_security which stops a lot of problems.
As long as Google remains a publically traded company they're going to have to keep the stock holders happy. The only way to do that is to make more money.
There's also the fact that running a major site like there's isn't free. Somebody has to pay for the fiber connections, server hardware, power, and cooling. There's also labor costs involved.
As long as the ads aren't those annoying animated banners I don't think I'll really mind.
You don't even need to use google's web page any way, just use the google search box in firefox or galeon.
Well, considering that Christmas has nothing to do with Christ (December 25th has been celebrated by many pagan religions) it's not all that surprising.
1. Most modern distros have automatic hardware detection.
2. This happens on windows too. Random blue screens, lock ups, etc.
3. Use hardware that is actually supported.
4. Dependencies handling is done by the package manager. If you're running a decent distro just fire up Synaptic, YaST, etc. and install the package you want.
Having served in the military, I know that thoughts like this aren't uncommon.
In basic training you are conditioned to be a lean, mean killing machine.
What makes the green grass grow? Blood, blood, the enemy's blood.
But when you think about it, it makes sense. Your job in the military is to kill people, if necessary. They don't want somebody that is going to hesitate.

Dells biggest customer is the U.S. government and corporate buyers. While some of them might not care I know the.gov is pretty picky about what goes into their systems.
Also a lot of web hosting companies use Dell servers, it would be nice to be able to order dual Opteron boxes that include a support contract.
If you want a stable system you should be upgrading kernels willy-nilly any way. Stick with your distro's kernel packages, at least those are tested for stability.

Sorry, but the MPAA/RIAA is right. You don't have the right to distribute movies to whoever you want.
I'm not sorry to see this site go, we need to concentrate more on having LEGAL torrent sites.
It's well worth the money though. Virtuozzo makes managing virtual machines much easier, and it actually controls access to system resources, unlike projects such as linux-vserver.
Where I work we switched from linux-vserver to virtuozzo and it's a world of difference. No more users complaining about somebody overloading the machine, etc.
Some people may be happy with just a dumb terminal as it does reduce the maintenance headaches of running a pc.
However I'm not sure I would want any company to have that level of control over my desktop system. Not to mention having all of my apps and data held hostage to a subscription fee.
People have been predicting the death of PCs since PCs were invented, but it hasn't happened yet. Anybody remember when network computers were supposed to be the next big thing?
That's the problem, computers are too complicated for ordinary users. Unless you spend hours and hours locking things down then your system will be vulnerable.
You shouldn't need a degree in network security in order to connect to the internet, but unfortunately that's the reality.
Also, a lot of people that own computers never use them to their full potential. If all you need is a word processor, then buy a word processor.
How many non-geeks know how to install Debian and configure mail services?
For normal users the best solution is to either get a hosting account somewhere that supports webmail, or open a gmail account. They configure everything for you so all you have to do is login and read your mail.
It's called Beep Media Player.

Yeah, I'm sure you want to deal with tons of phone calls after you change a server setting and break things.

No thanks.
I don't it's worth spending the time relearning how to type when there's 50 million other things to keep me busy.

If it works why switch? MySQL 3.23 is very stable and works for most purposes.
Tell that to Richard Garfield. He owns a patent on CCgs and the game mechanics.

The only traffic allowed past the router is incoming port 22.
Yes, there is. People sign up for mailing lists to get sale info, coupons, or other deals from companies.
