But which toolkit would they use? Gtk, QT, Motif? Actually, Adobe should be able to compile Photoshop using the wine libraries, like Wordperfect did with their office suite.
If it doesn't work out of the box then it might as well not be there at all. Same reason that 99% of people use IE for their browser, it's the default.
I will respect their IP rights. I don't pirate MS software or anybody's else's software.
However, MS has to respect that once you buy something, you have the right to do whatever you want with it. If I want to buy an Xbox and use it as a door stop, that's my right.
Downloading something is hardly proof of copyright infringement. What is the file just happens to have the same name as some artist they own, but it's a totally different band, or it's not even music.
First they would have to prove that you intentionally shared the file, that the file came from you, and that the file is in fact copyrighted material, either through md5sums or actually listening to the file.
And even if they do sue you, you can just claim that somebody hacked your computer.

As long as I'm paying for it I DO have an absolute right to my bandwidth cap. I'm paying for 512 kps, so if I run my connection at 512 kps 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, they have no right to bitch.
If the ISP can't handle people actually using what they sell, they should stop overselling the services.
Bandwidth should be like any other utility. Once the connection is hooked up to your house, who cares how many computers you have on it. You're paying them for the bandwidth, so it doesn't matter whether you divide it between 10 computers or 1 computer, the amount of bits transferred would still be the same.
So NFS and windows file sharing are illegal now? It is almost impossible for network admins to know what is on every single network share on the LAN. Especially if people are running shares from their desktop machines.
There is a Windows version of GAIM. http://gaim.sourceforge.net. It isn't a commercial product, but it supports all the IM systems using plugins, and it's never crashed on me.
I think using wingaim with your own jabber server would be a good solution if you want to have your own messenging solution. My company uses jabber with the linux version of gaim to send out server notices and other alarms.
I was a geek in high school. I wasn't popular, but people didn't really pick on me either. I guess they were scared I'd come in and start shooting people. Everybody said they thought I was psycho. Basically people acted like I didn't exist.
And no, I wasn't an asshole or condescending towards people. I was the exact opposite. I hung out with the nerds, the geeks, the people nobody else would talk to because they weren't "cool".
I distinctly remember being asked "Why do you hang out with so and so? He's stupid, he smells." My answer was that I've known him for years, he's a cool guy. I do not judge others by their appearance.
None of it matters now, I've got a great job, great house, and plenty of money. I'm making more than some of those people combined, and this is not a rich area.

Dear SCO,
Please have a nice cup of STFU. Until you show some evidence, in court, I will continue to ignore any and all claims that they make.
And no, I will not take your word for it that some of your supposed code is in the kernel, and no, I won't sign any NDAs to see the evidence.

net send computername "I am working on blah blah blah...."
Just switch to the BSD license, like the Vorbis project did.
I have an 80 GB /home on my file server which is exported through NFS and Samba.
NFS is not that complex. Edit the exports file, restart mountd, and mount it on the client machine.
Samba is pretty simple to set up through SWAT.

Microsoft has Program Files. Linux has ... /usr/local/src?
/usr or /usr/local.
... /home?
/home is easier to type too.

If your distro uses a decent file system layout it would be
Microsoft has Documents and Settings. Linux has
Makes sense to me.
Microsoft has Computer Management. Linux has
Webmin, YaST, Gnome Control Center, vim, or whatever else you want to use.
Microsoft has Internet Explorer. Linux has Netscape, Mozilla, and Konquerer.
Which all kick IE's ass.
Microsoft has Windows Update with 3 clicks. Linux has
up2date, apt-get upgrade, emerge.
Mirosoft has Windows Media Player. Linux has
Mplayer, xine, ogle, etc.
Microsoft has (*gasp*) setup.exe as a standard install. Linux has configure, make, and make install.
Or apt-get install.
Microsoft has Office. Linux has OpenOffice, KDE Office, and StarOffice.
Let me know when you can download MS Office for free.
Bah. If every movie, tv show, and song recording on the earth disappeared, I wouldn't miss them.
Go outside, do something, and make your own entertainment.
You buy however many copies you need for each system, including test systems.
If you don't like their rules, don't use their products.
$14 an hour is pretty damn good.
Sure, you won't be driving around a ferrari at $14 an hour, but you can still live quite comfortably at that salary.
Lessig's blog is one of the most important sites on the net.
It is? Please get over yourself.

One word. Apple.
You really shouldn't assume things, it just makes you sounds stupid.
I pay every bill that comes in for my house.
There's this wonderful invention called the remote control. And if your TV is advanced enough, you can program the channels out. Wow, what a concept.
Having an anime channel available doesn't hurt anybody. It's better than the stupid home shopping and golf channels.

Since they can't use the network for transferring files, they'll just do it the old fashioned way. Burn to a CD or DVD-R and pass them around.
Messenging has been implemented on windows since NT 4.0, maybe even earlier.
If you open a command prompt and type in "net send computername Your message here", a message window will pop up on that machine's desktop.

And monkeys may fly out of my butt.
You have to? Is WoTC holding a gun to your head?
Most of the people I play with still use 2nd edition, don't think we'll be changing any time soon.
