Perhaps Slashdot, slowly accepting their continuing decline in the web forum discussion arena, is trying to reinvigorate what they perceive to be their original driving force (shitting on Microsoft) instead of trying to fix the actual problems (that the site is stale, the "editing" still is non-existent after all these years, and that other outlets on the web provide more open ideas than the stagnant masturbatory groupthink).
If "Bob Smith" is a registered sex offender in a large urban area, another Bob Smith in the same area might have some difficulty getting hired for a job. Perhaps the scrapers might see some revenue in selling "whitelist" services.
Don't worry, the executives will pad their bank accounts with what is left of the company coffers before finally driving it into the ground. Happy ending!
Keep in mind that Drew is running Fark as a business, and certain comments that might rail against his corporate superiors will get modded or banned. Drew and his modmins are know to ban people based on petty rivalries and personality conflicts. Fark is no bastion of "free speech", and what would he know about "wisdom" from a site that is dedicated to goofball headlines and accelerated political trolling.
They are often easily swayed by a nifty presentation from a guy who doesn't know too much either but promises everything, and of course the ability to cut cost in half, if not more, so they buy.
If you've worked in a huge shop, you know that the big software vendors send reps out to IT managers for golf outings and the like. Screw it if the software works or not, just fluff up the guy with the budget rubber stamp.
So they took UltraVNC from a couple of years ago, which includes its own webserver with a Java interface accessible from a browser - and added a conversion program to change the Java into Javascript w/Canvas?
And you read about it on Slashdot! Ready to become a subscriber yet?????/??/11
Of course not. Doing useful things like adding Unicode support is apparently less important than adding more Web 2.0 junk to the site.
Eventually they will discover that Unicode is part of "Web 2.0". It's even supported in URLs now!
Unfortunately there's no provision in "Web 2.0" for "Competent editors for a news aggregator forum", so we'll still have to wait on that one.
DHH's ego is getting REAL big! /jk
and wait for the Republicans to fight this government intervention tooth and nail. .........

I'd prefer Stallman's outspoken extremism vs the quiet extremism that corporations would place us under if no one spoke up.
Right, because a patent troll interrupting a FSF convention would be viewed as just as legitimate.
C'mon samzenpus, you can do better than this...
Are you serious?
But it's "Steve", man! Don't you trust Steve to look after our best interests?? With Steve all things are possible.
Yesterday's news about politics on a geek website. Where do I pay????
Personal attacks on him or his website does not refute the "wisdom" of his words.
What "wisdom"? Drew is after page hits and maintaining an advertiser-friendly site, not wisdom.
Wow dude, way to try and down fark while pushing your own weak ass bullshit site in your sig.
So what (it's not "my" site anyways)? Challenge: Post this url in any Fark thread.

An InfoWorld submitter submits a non-story about Oracle/MySQL on Slashdot. A Slashvertisement for an advertisement.
I wonder if kdawson gets a cut or just posts what he's told to post.
to have /. show only things posted on /. that aren't a complete goddamn waste of time, and it redirected me to "about:blank"
We need a disk that can only be writen by divine intervention at Hell's main furnace, temperature.
That would be "The Matrix: Revolutions" special edition BluRay with extended director's apology voice track.
Kind of like modern IP laws...

I'd think most search engines would automatically trash a headline with "Slashdot" and "well-researched" that close to each other.
Nonsense, a scam would have been caught by the crack Slashdot editing staff. /sarc

'nuff said.
Slashdot hasn't been Taco's site for some time now. He's solely trolling for page hits for his superior's ad revenue.
