As a photographer myself I would recommend to print out the best choice prints and store them physically, as photographic prints still has the best record for preservation when compared to any / all types of digital media. By all means take running copies of all your data, on and offsite backup. A physical copy of the best prints though is likely to be preserved longer.

I mean anyone can play Guitar, but what gives Spotify the rights to Creep around grabbing all the Dollars and Cents. Hail to the thief is what they say, call the Karma police and arrest Spotify I say! Spotify and their ilk are a bunch of High and Dry Thiefs. We should Stop Whispering and Start Shouting from the hilltops. Just the Million Dollar Question will our ranting make any difference; we might as well right a complaint to the Daily Mail for what good it will do. I might be wrong, but I think I hear the Exit Music playing for all these up and coming new bands. We should all act as the Judge, Jury and Executioner and leave Spotify; Dropped by the roadside of history like so many Stuck Together Pieces of other peoples art.

  4. The whole terrorism things is a diversion on NSA Surveillance May Have Dealt Major Blow To Global Internet Freedom Efforts · · Score: 1

The whole terrorism thing is a diversion. PRISM is built to improve the US espionage - both internally and externally .Essentially they have built a tool that allows them to gain an espionage advantage - and they will use it to support all forms of espionage that they have wherever possible. So it will be a tool to support the American foreign policy agenda and domestic political agenda. Then the question is - have the Americans ever made mistakes in foreign policy / domestic policy? A few things spring to my mind - like watergate, Guantanimo, rendition, selling arms to various overseas governments, drone strikes on civilian targets, the list goes on and on. The oversight of this whole thing is extremely limited as even senators of congress are not allowed to openly question what this is used for or how it is used.

" It tells the American people it exists to spy on foreigners" - and hey - it just has to be ok for the US to spy on all foreigners right? - because lets not forget that all foreigners are inherently potential terrorists in the making. America has far to many allies - and its best to try to alienate as many as possible to simplify the definition of terrorist!

Matrix metering has been around much longer than 6 years - my 1992 Nikon F90X had 5 segment matrix metering.
The D3/D700 metering is actually pretty complex - the camera has an onboard database of thousands of images metering results - and it determines the correct exposure by comparing the pixel arrays metering result with that database.

  9. Thom Hogan has a very critical write up on this on Chicago Sun Times Swaps iPhone Training For Staff Photographers · · Score: 4, Insightful

Thom Hogan (Nikon expert) has a very critical take on this here , one which I happen to agree with fully, to quote Thom:
" If you're in the content business, there's one simple rule you have to remember: create the best content for your chosen media. First, you can sell great content to customers (circulation revenue). Second, you can sell your access to a great set of customers to others (advertising revenue). Corollary: if you don't invest in the content, you'll die. First, because you don't attract a large enough audience and can't hold them. Second, because the declining audience will scare advertisers away. Finally, if you just run from your chosen medium to try to dominate another one, you're playing moose to someone else's elephant. Prepare to get stepped on."

  11. Re:Except this little thing your skipped on Adobe's Creative Cloud Illustrates How the Cloud Costs You More · · Score: 1

Yeah but its the Adobe Camera Raw module that is the problem! Just about every serious photographer shoots RAW and then converts to JPG in a digital process that resembles darkroom processing steps of old typically they use lightroom or CS6 for this step. Adobe continually only release the latest versions of ACR for the latest versions of their product - and I can see that this will mean that in the future only the cloud version will be able to process files from the latest digital cameras. Meaning if you buy a new camera and you shoot RAW you have just the one choice with Adobe software and that is the cloud. On Dpreview forums photographers are really letting rip the past few days on what they think of this choice levelled to loyal customers of Adobe. This can only be good news for their competition.

  12. What a lot of people seem to be missing on Play Tetris To Fix Your Lazy Eye · · Score: 1

From the article I think its not just a matter of playing Tetris - you need to have one eye watching the falling blocks and the other eye watching the blocks at the base of the screen - and I guess they are doing either via a headset or a split monitor display or something - not that clear from the article itself. So there is a little bit more to this than just playing tetris. I suffer from lazy eye myself and I have always been very skeptical on opticians assurances that it can only be corrected in children. Then as a child I was made to wear an eye patch for several years - and it made no difference whatsoever. It seems to me that the opticians / eye doctors were not 100% sure on the way to correct this either and that a lot of pseudoscience was being preached.

For me its all a matter of ergonomics and the individuals hand size. Sure applications developers can develop for folks with larger phones and small hands - but in general they don't give a damn. I have a Galaxy S2 - and sometimes I do find it a stretch when using the device one handed - and I have dropped the phone on more than one occasion - so I guess I don't want too much bigger than an S2 - but people with bigger hands will want bigger devices. It definitely is easier on the eyes to read from a larger screen.

I think it really depends on the capabilities of the camera you are shooting with. I only use San disk extreme or Lexar pro cards - with My Nikon D800 (36MP). You cannot afford the dropped shots - and for video a high end card is even more critical. That said though in the D800 the SD card is my backup card the other slot is for my compact flash card - which is faster (and more expensive) again due to the built in memory controller.

Personally I think its great to see companies doing things in non-conventional ways - and I wouldn't mind my it center being modelled around a UFO or alien spaceship - just to brighten things up a bit ;)
