I keep VM versions of earlier MS operating systems and OSs at different patch levels (eg XP/XP S1/XP SP2) for testing purposes when I release software. I'm glad to see the Microsoft does not want small developers to test for compatibility on home versions of Vista.
If you look at their SEC 10K statements for the last 5 years you'll see that they have lost $4.7 billion net (revenue - expenses) and are on track to lose $1.2 billion this fiscal year for the business unit that the XBox is in. They've only had one profitable quarter ever, the one Halo 2 came out in.
Explain to me how in any sense this is a business success to the shareholders?
.87Mh 6809, 32K Ram (64K with a hardware hack and disabling the ROM), 1500Baud tape deck, 32x16 display with no descenders or lower-case and a block cursor that flashed through all 8 colors each second to guarantee to trigger an epileptic fit if you were prone to such things; simple madness otherwise.
A long time ago a Microsoft developer visited the company I worked with at the time. He was taLking to us about how Microsoft did cross-platform development. One of the things he mentioned was all of the work they put into the middleware layer in the Mac version of IE and how he wished Microsoft would productize it.
Upon checking my notes and seeing it was 1999 I now realize he must have been talking about the MacOS 9 version. I forgot that they redid the whole thing when they carbonized the thing./me rubs my old failing braincase.
Well according to their FAQ 100% of the money given directly to them is goes through, however it does not say what Amazon's cut, if any, is other than their normal profit.
A: We have partnered with Amazon.com, which hosts a series of "Wish Lists" stocked with toys the hospitals have requested, as well as age appropriate videogames and game systems selected by Child's Play. Simply choose the hospital nearest you from our interactive map at http://www.childsplaycharity.org/ and the toys you purchase will be delivered directly. We also accept cash donations via Paypal to childsplaycharity@penny-arcade.com, which will be split evenly among the hospitals in this year's event. There are no "administrative fees" or other hidden costs associated with giving to Child's Play - every cent is passed on.
I remember once when I was was trying to track down a bug I wrote some debugging code which I then commneted out with: #ifdef _SEX_WITH_FARM_ANIMALS_...Debugging code... #endif Later, someone wanted to integrate with my code so I saved it off to the interim repository and a few minutes later I got a visit from my co-worker.
Dan Fernandez's (My Response) response to Richard Grimes (RG)
* RG: I take the decision to make Avalon available to other versions of Windows as a lack of confidence in the sales of Longhorn.
* RG: However, Microsoft's announcement that Avalon will be available for other versions of Windows indicates to me that they are not so confident on the uptake of Longhorn, and developers will not write applications for Avalon if they are not convinced that there will be the clients that will run it.
My Reponse: The decision to make Avalon available to other versions of Windows was driven by one thing, customer demand. Any rudimentary Web search turns up results of customers complaining about not being able to have this functionality on down-level operating systems.
Good! Then things like SP2 fixes and IE7 for windows 2000 will not be a problem since customers are complaining about having functionality on down-level operating systems!
In the 24 hours between the time I composed the prior note, and sent it, and it made its way through the moderation software, two things happened:
1) I heard from a trusted source that Paramount is giving the Trek TV world a rest for maybe one to two years, depending on circumstances, no matter who would come along to run it. So it's not right to have folks putting in time doing something that ultimately would be pointless, I don't think that's a proper use of anybody's time.
2) At the same time as the above, an offer came in to run a new TV series for fall of '06, and since there's no way anything Trek can happen in the interim, I've said yes (now we have to negotiate the deal, but that should be fairly straightforward).
So on two counts, the whole thing is kind of moot.
We can reconvene a year or two down the road to see where this takes us, but in the interim...my apologies for waking everybody up in the middle of the night.
"And so at a critical juncture in space (a key Euphrates bridge) and time (the morning of the day U.S. forces captured the Baghdad airport), Marcone only learned what he was facing when the shooting began. In the early-morning hours of April 3, it was old-fashioned training, better firepower, superior equipment, air support, and enemy incompetence that led to a lopsided victory for the U.S. troops. "When the sun came up that morning, the sight of the cost in human life the Iraqis paid for that assault, and burning vehicles, was something I will never forget," Marcone says. "It was a gruesome sight. You look down the road that led to Baghdad, for a mile, mile and a half, you couldn't walk without stepping on a body part."
Yet just eight U.S. soldiers were wounded, none seriously, during the bridge fighting. Whereas U.S. tanks could withstand a direct hit from Iraqi shells, Iraqi vehicles would "go up like a Roman candle" when struck by U.S. shells, Marcone says. Sitting in an office at Rand, Gordon puts things bluntly: "If the army had had Strykers at the front of the column, lots of guys would have been killed." At Objective Peach, what protected Marcone's men wasn't information armor, but armor itself."

It's still more inspiring than Developers! Developers! Developers! Developers!
Until they reach that level I think they're OK at developer conferences.
You stop that! I saw an interview with George Lucas where he said that scene was never even filmed much less was ever in any version of the film.
It cannot exist! Stop posted evidence to the contrary!

I was rocking with that baby!
My bad.

I'm not that interested in the browser but some of the middleware code to emulate windows calls on the Mac might be interesting to play with...
Absolutely!
Pain is good. Extreme pain is extremely good.
I guess PayPal could also be taking a cut on the direct donations.
Give until it hurts and then give a little more. It's worth it.
Happily that code is yet to execute...

Don't worry by Monday they'll say something that will take the edge off of your happiness. Sorry for being the 'reaper.
Have a nice weekend!
I have no problem with it as long as it's applied to all media such as games, music, books, magazines, movies, TV, spoken word, etc....
Google:

Great. I guess who were using Xtraceroute in the 90s to do this are now all SOL.
...from the last page.

I'm a bit suprised taht "Contact" did not make the list....
...then you would not have to worry about loosing the pen :-)
I wonder if this machine will come with dual 450W power supplies to power the dual high end NVidia GeForce 6 cards...
Feels more like MiB3 than the book I read. Looks like it could be good but at the moment I wish that they would not call it I Robot...
Ever notice that www.sco.com is running linux (Netcraft.com)? I guess Unixware is not up to the task....
