I keep VM versions of earlier MS operating systems and OSs at different patch levels (eg XP/XP S1/XP SP2) for testing purposes when I release software. I'm glad to see the Microsoft does not want small developers to test for compatibility on home versions of Vista.
If you look at their SEC 10K statements for the last 5 years you'll see that they have lost $4.7 billion net (revenue - expenses) and are on track to lose $1.2 billion this fiscal year for the business unit that the XBox is in. They've only had one profitable quarter ever, the one Halo 2 came out in.
Explain to me how in any sense this is a business success to the shareholders?

One of the things he mentioned was all of the work they put into the middleware layer in the Mac version of IE and how he wished Microsoft would productize it.
Upon checking my notes and seeing it was 1999 I now realize he must have been talking about the MacOS 9 version. I forgot that they redid the whole thing when they carbonized the thing./me rubs my old failing braincase.
Well according to their FAQ 100% of the money given directly to them is goes through, however it does not say what Amazon's cut, if any, is other than their normal profit.

My Reponse: The decision to make Avalon available to other versions of Windows was driven by one thing, customer demand. Any rudimentary Web search turns up results of customers complaining about not being able to have this functionality on down-level operating systems.
Good! Then things like SP2 fixes and IE7 for windows 2000 will not be a problem since customers are complaining about having functionality on down-level operating systems!
In the 24 hours between the time I composed the prior note, and sent it, and it made its way through the moderation software, two things happened:
1) I heard from a trusted source that Paramount is giving the Trek TV world a rest for maybe one to two years, depending on circumstances, no matter who would come along to run it. So it's not right to have folks putting in time doing something that ultimately would be pointless, I don't think that's a proper use of anybody's time.
2) At the same time as the above, an offer came in to run a new TV series for fall of '06, and since there's no way anything Trek can happen in the interim, I've said yes (now we have to negotiate the deal, but that should be fairly straightforward).
So on two counts, the whole thing is kind of moot.
We can reconvene a year or two down the road to see where this takes us, but in the interim...my apologies for waking everybody up in the middle of the night.

I'm not that interested in the browser but some of the middleware code to emulate windows calls on the Mac might be interesting to play with...
