Kiss it goodbye - as a source for scientific reality. USA is effectively an oligarchy - with rich science-denying aholes that deny because its good for them personally & could not care less about the little people, in fact, despise their very existence. Sociopathic ahole solution to imminent water resource wars? Just let em all die. So what to do, O helpless masses? Just pretend this planet is only temporary cuz heaven is the real prize? Poor earth and its biosphere's inhabitants. These rich oligarch aholes i.e. Rupert Murdoch, have been winning their damn battles against sanity far too long. The goal is obvious. Keep the young & old fools dumb and clueless - they'll be less trouble that way i.e. entire Fox News demographic.
If you've got an SSD, disable indexing. Yes you lose search function, oh well.
What I need is reliable disk imaging s/w - like Acronis *used* to be, way back when. If Windows ever went sluggish, restore that disk image, and BAM! Got my snappy system back. But no go anymore, not with Windows 7 - at least not from Acronis. Forget about Norton Ghost waste of time.
Reinstalling Windows 7 from scratch is a freaking nightmare w/all the stuff I'd have to reinstall along with it.
Don't even want to think about it, but I think I have some god damned malware that can't be taken care of by Malwarebytes nor Eset, so I might have to:(((((
Damn all the ransomware lamers out there using prebuilt kiddie tools.
Maybe he watched a youtube video by Richard Hoagland and believes there's an ancient 250 million year old disintegrating (from micrometeorite impacts), domed city of mile-high skyscrapers on the dark side of the moon. Furthermore, that NASA decided to classify it all and said 'we'll deal with all that later'. Interesting delusion, and would make a decent sci-fi book if you're a creative writer type.
The world needs scientists to speak up and drive changes in human activity on this planet (NOW). Why are we all allowing a bunch of selfish, corrupted sociapathic billionaires dictate immediate fate of the biosphere - especially the oceans. Oceanic life extinct in 2050 and civilization is allowing a tiny minority of ultra rich oil barons and aggro-businesses to effectively wipe out all life? What is crazy? Perhaps it is too late for earth and its precious lifeforms. That doesn't mean these shills go on and do what they do unpunished. Their bullshit needs to be wiped out - decades ago. Is human civilzation really so helpless and stupid, that it cannot stop itself from screwing up the future of all life, including its own?
Meaningless vitriol. I suppose you will debunk the IPCC's 5th report on global warming next. This world has serious problems, and there is no time for the idiotic stall tactics of politics of the plutocracy. If the human race cannot cut through the damn red tape, then it will go extiinct with the rest of life that already has disappeared in this current man-made mass extinction all life is in. You want to believe Jesus is going to appear and save everyone from themselves, then get out of the way.
In the meantime, the oceans die and soon after everything else, regardless what the likes of Koch bros and their right-wing hate radio mouthpieces care about and believe.
The last thing this earth needs from humanity is a growing mass of entombed radioactive wastes with half-lives ranging from 30 years to 4.5 billion years. Industry will not conduct itself ethically when it's overseen by governments full of cronies cherry picked by industry itself. Corners will be cut, and hazardous events will
occur. Human civilization has proven itself to lack the wisdom and moral courage to be responsible enough for the well-being of this planet's biosphere. Total energy consumption of human civilization must be brought down to sustainable levels. If humanity does not find a way to cut consumption, then human civilization and most of the remaining life on this planet (that humanity is supposed to be sharing with), will crash far sooner than anyone is publicly predicting.
Can anyone other than Bill Gates pull that off? No. Metro was betting on a "post PC age" where tablets and other gadgets rule the day. But tablets are mainly for consumption of content, not creation, nor any meaningful application such as CAD, Adobe CS suite or even office suites. Until such applications are viable on a sufficiently powerful 'tablet PC' with a large, foldable and/or rollable surface - and sensitive enough for fine grained CAD and office work user input - the keyboard/mouse/graphics tablet input/desktop monitor/PC box configuration is going to be in demand. It's too bad AMD washed up. You force feed the lame metro interface - while apparently scaling back on the continual pursuit of perfecting the windows desktop gui user experience at your own peril Microsoft. Maybe you're the new RIM/Blackberry.
The NSA wants total access to everything man-made. They could use effective restraint, but from where? Not from the useless news media, not from an ill-informed public, and certainly not from the congress nor executive branches, & apparently not from the judiciary.
I'm sure those in the NSA are stopping all kinds of evil doings that human beings do. Without proper oversight that eavesdropping power is open to all kinds of abuse/misuse, from petty personal vendetta's, to political/commercial spying and assassinations. I'd like to believe that every NSA agent is an outstanding and responsible, disciplined, individual with a much higher than average intellect, wisdom, and moral compass driving them. Is that really the case though? Apparently it is not the case.
Selling the tablet bundled with a keyboard suggests Dell views it as a device for creating content rather than just consuming it, perhaps because Windows RT is designed to provide some "laptop-like" capabilities, Kay said.
Got it? Softkeys on tablets on smartphones are for consuming content, not creating any serious content. For texting, and short emails, softkeys are annoying. Are quality tactile keyboards and keypads antiquated by the hipster consumer crowd? Damn brats.
Right then, send in your arguments, so they can all be shot down more effectively, and precisely, by the likes of the copyright lobby and other big money interests with crack legal teams. Big money owns, and runs govt., including the chit-chat at the water cooler.
Political rhetoric aside, if there is a shred of truth to this possible methane bomb event, then humanity is too stupid, and unable to hit the brakes. You wind up with theories on how can human civilization possibly make the type of significant global changes to its daily operation that might mitigate the damage? Drastically cut the population via conventional weapons or some bio-engineered attack on humanity? Jam the majority of human population into giant bio-domed metropolises? (nah, that's sci-fi fantasy). I'm leaning more on mass-extinction level event that accelerates on top of the existing mass-extinction event already in progress, that wipes out everything except maybe cockroaches. Jesus isn't going to save us from our stupidity. Either way, its a possible type of armageddon, no matter what you believe.
Nothing but astroturf PR. Cluck! Cluck! Caw! Caw! Squee! Squee! Whine and moan for show. They all know damn well nothing changes because we no longer have an informed public that cares one way or the other. That's the power of money, you buy things like revolving-door congressmen and congresswomen. Its the same reason we are wrecking the planet at record speeds.
That was an interesting comment on a specific historical tale, even if its a complete distraction. Big corporations in bed with a government that has always wanted backdoor keys to easily bypass all encryption all the time. Always open to human frailty - our ability to be manipulated and coerced, and for the users of such power to quickly be wholly corrupted. On the other hand, its good news for cheap-thrill exhibitionists naked on Skype, at least until puritans (by perception) take over everything again.

Spying on criminal elements of society is one thing, spying on everyone, and assembling metadata into some huge
searchable database with a profit motive is another.
Smartphones are vulnerable, uncontrolled front-ends to the web & "cloud" apps like dropbox and GPS surveillance. Ban non-corporate smartphones, while allowing call-forwarding. Disable PAN ports & Wifi on all workstations- anything that connects unauthorized devices to the corporate network. This will not stop stealth cameras/camcorders/GPS from spying. As these devices get smaller and smaller, anything short of an invasive strip search will not prevent spying. You'll need to rely on usage policy statements. Regardless, if you run an R&D outfit, or you're Gordon Gecko, and give a damn about your private corporate data, consider banning non-corporate smartphones.

The people that matter know him, obviously like him, are aware of his capabilities, and are willing to help finance his cs degree. They see a big future for him at THEIR company. If they thought he was a job-hopper, they'd kick him to the curb in a second.
Those chickens were most likely buried alive. i.e. Chickens Buried Alive - Culling, and Chickens Alive in Bags before buried Alive The food processing and factory farm/aggribusiness lobbies are the most effective at shielding the general public from severely cruel and unethical operations to maximize profits. These are living animals with advanced nervous systems and brains. So laugh at this
"Four or more cups a day lowered the risk of getting oral cancers by 49%."
Is that public relations from coffee producers?
Did the percentage of oral cancers go down because people died from diabetes?
I'm VERY skeptical.
Why'd you flag his post as a troll for? It's a legit assumption, whether its completely ignorant of the study or not. Most of the general public are increasingly unaware of more and more reality outside their individual tiny inner circles of immediate friends and family, and their social media apps. Corporate media is a dubious source of information controlled by the biggest advertisers and trust funds from big oil and other polluters. These types of funders, clearly driven by self-interest, drive the storyline the public chats about, injecting half-truths and lies that promote their own selfish interests into the public conscience, everyone and everything else be damned. So yeah, warm n fuzzy "studies" like this should be initially met with skepticism.
As much as I wish you were wrong... for technical books, with lots of diagrams, eBooks are lacking. eBooks need some critical features:
Robust search & presentation
Excellent bookmarking features.
Palm/Handspring-style stylus/finger writing recognition (including optional stylus for finer, more precise input) for note taking that ties in with bookmarks and search engine, and how about giving us other personal productivity apps as good and useful as Palm's were?
Lack of cpu power is no excuse for this lack of "innovation" in UI and presentation in ebook readers. Stop behaving like uncreative risk-averse fun-killing MBAs running hollywood productions.
Give it everything Palm Pilot gave its users + an excellent ebook reader. Do something, because iPads sitting on peoples laps does who-knows-what to their gonads.
What regulation that allowed viable competition was removed? As far as I am aware, both cable providers and telephone providers have been regulated as local monopolies for almost as long as the former has existed and since before I was born for the latter. Unless someone else is allowed to run the cabling/fiber there can be no real competition. The fact that there are no more than two options just about everywhere is a product of regulation, not a product of the removal of regulation.
"In theory, this step implied that broadband was equivalent to a content provider (such as AOL or Yahoo!) and was not a means to communicate, such as a telephone line. In practice, it has stifled competition.
Phone companies have to compete for your business. Even though there may be just one telephone jack in your home, you can purchase service from any one of a number of different long-distance providers. Not so for broadband Internet. Here consumers generally have just two choices: the cable company, which sends data through the same lines used to deliver television signals, and the phone company, which uses older telephone lines and hence can only offer slower service."
Just because you can not, does not mean the rest of us can not.
I use iPad for everything including writing papers....works just fine for what it is intended, and that is subjective to the user. In my use case, I am taking it when I am on a commute like the train, or on the go at classes. It's light and easy to use in closed quarters and when I'm back at my house I simply open the same notes on my laptop to continue. The right tool, in the right place at the right time.
So once again, just because you can not make it work....does not discount the rest of us who can.
Its "cannot", unless that was weak sarcasm. Before you two girls get into a hamster-on-a-wheel style face-slapping fight, you can use decent bluetooth keyboards with the iPad if don't feel like 2-finger touch typing your way through real work.
