how is the information on the fingerprint stored on the system? If its just kept in a generic file (encrypted of course) what happens if a virus gets on the system and screws up the data on the fingerprint? If there any way of resetting the FP information? But hold on now, if there was a way of resetting the information on the FP's then what would be the point of having it in the first place? Maybe you would have to send the notebook back to acer for them to reset the information... or am i just way out there on this... anyone else have any ideas or links to more specific information on the security system for the notebook?
actually i was being sarcastic... i work for a computer store and we get people comming in all the time asking us to send their palm (or something similar) back to the manufacturer to get the screen replaced becuase it got cracked (most commonly due to people sitting on them by accident). Hopefuly they can develop a stronger screen for them.
I'm glad that it can run underwater for hours and take a 1.5m fall and still work great but, what happens if the 300pound owner sits on it? Will the screen still crack - voiding the warranty - putting the consumer out on thier ass spending $200 bucks to have it replaced? Or will they finaly make a more resiliant, shatter proof, glass plate for it? Just curious...
I know I've set up a few systems for some of the clubs around my area that use computer systems to handle all thier dj'ing. I know from experience that many clubs in major cities are starting to do this as well; mostly because it helps preserve the orignal cd's from becomming scratched and un-usable. Now if the most of the dance, hip-hop and r&b artists decide to go along with this style of copy protection, then the dance clubs will be out on thier ass. I wonder what they will decide to do (both club owners and artists trying to sell thier cds)?
In airports, the face recognition technology would be a good idea (once the system becomes better at actualy being able to tell the difference between my dog spot and the bathroom plunger). But the big argument comes with putting this techonolgy to use outside the airports, like in public parks, or on street cornors. I know I wouldn't like that very much, and i don't think many other people would appriciate big brother watching them every time they step outside their homes. On the other hand, putting them to use in airports, trainstations, stadiums, or even nudie bars (you get the idea) would be a great help to protect the areas where tens of thousands of people can potentialy gather -- but thats just my opinion.
how the hell can you guys troll me for this, If you heard the press release by MS you would be thankful for what bill gates said. he told the news basicly this; "if people think that they can attack the strongest county in the world and get away with it, they're wrong. Microsoft will rebuild the World Trade Centers" - in no way did i even slightly imply that this was fuckin funny, so to hell with any of you that think that my first post was even slightly sarcastic, because it was nowhere near that.
I just heard an uncomfirmed report the Bill Gates has pledged that microsoft will rebuild the towers. I'm checking microsofts site to confirm and will post any links that i find.
i keep reading these posts about in this thread about other companies that have done this but nobody knows what happened to those companines, except that maybe they got shut down. I know there is a place here in my hometown thats been doing this now for about the last 4-6 years and they are making quite a profit on it. However, they are not stupid... they will not rent programs or games that are on the top ten list. Only older programs/games or newer ones after the slip a few places on the charts.
they have had these things for a while now, caught the article on the discovery channel or TLC a year or so ago - bah one or the other, I'll see if I can dig up the orignal article and post a follow up.
it sounds like they want to use the mice like they did pigeons in the mines back in the day. If the carbon-monoxide levels got to high the birds would be the first to die, telling the miners its time to leave. sounds like its same concept with the mice, if they start dying off or growing abnormaly, then they will know that maybe mars aint the place to colonize...
if amd is just getting scared about the preformance reviews that are gettting posted? like the one at [H]ard|OCP which shows that AMD is keeping up, but still be out done by the pentium. I know, I know "but the pentium is 600mhz faster than the amd in the tests"; by the time amd gets their 2.2ghz chip out there to compete with the intel 2ghz, intel will have a faster one out there for people to test. after all intel is starting to take the lead in the chip speeds.
A no smokeing section in a restaurant is like having a no peeing section in a swimming pool.
what about spedific hardware and software limitations? I havn't used linux very much myself, but from what i've heard its a great OS for a base system. word processing and most desktop apps have been moved over to it fairly easily, but what about going to some more powerfuly software such as video editing, digital video production or audio editing and production - which is what i'm into myself. There are a lot of surperb programs out there that would great on a windows platform, but I havn't found anything supporting linux. or am i just not looking in the right places?
I would love to be able to get away from microsoft, but until there is more program support for linux (wether its free or not), im stuck.
of course its easy to put in a windows cd and simply let it boot up. then the only thing the person has to do is let the program install. and your done, the problem comes with the drviers being installed; which is where the image cd's come in very handy for customers, since it take the burden away from them trying to install it all themselves.
"Saying that it'd kill the sales is disingenious- there's ways of carrying through with the suggestion that users and OEMs can not only live with, but would find workable just the same."
with that comment, the only thing i can say is try selling a computer to a person who has never owned one before, then selling them a copy of windows 98 seperate. how long do you think it will take before they are calling you up saying the computer they just bought dosn't work. you can ask the simple question "did you install windows on it yet sir?" and of course the answer is going to be "how do you do that". Then here comes the telephone support, spending the next couple of hours on the phone trying to help the poor guy out; or you could tell him to bring the system back and you will install it for them, but wait, there's a catch, you have to charge him for it and of course they are not going to want to pay for that service becuase it should have been included. So now you decide to please the customer and install it for them for no charge, and presto, you have now lost you profit on the machine you just sold. unless of course you take it back, give him his money back and just eat the time you spent building it, selling it, and then taking it back... but hey, if you think that won't kill your sales, then by all means, go ahead and do it.
but you see, you can always reject windows and get nothing with the system, but then the burden falls on you to supply an OS for yourself; unless you're planning on using windows without a licence (and that would just be wrong:P). What i'm saying is that the average person has absolutly no clue on how to install windows, let alone anything else. The reason why next to nobody offers anything else except windows is becuase of support, there is simply more support out there for windows.
If you install freeBSD on a system for a customer, then you have to support freeBSD for that customer. you have to think of it like a customer does, if they buy something for their system and it dosn't work, they are going to be calling the guy that sold it to them.
Then comes compatability with the system, you're only going to use freeBSD if you know how. I think its safe to say that the average person will not know what their doing with it, let alone where to get help for it.
[end rant]
I work for and OEM computer distributer, and i can say that if we didn't install any OS on any systems, that would just kill our sales. Not many people have the knowledge on how to install the OS along with all the required drivers for their systems. Second, we are also a Microsoft Certified Partner, if we didn't install the OS, the customer would simply be calling us for support on in installing it. That i think would be even more of a pain in the ass.

i read an article some time ago about things you could get on the net. In the article there was some statesmen from Texas that was purposing the idea of "leagly killing someone". Since they have all the people on death row, they would auction off the chance to "flip the switch" so to speak, making it a completly legal way to kill someone. I can't find the link to the article right now, but if i do come across it, i will post it in a follow up.
but it is clear that the mission will be by default a collaborative effort between the CSA and another space organization with launch capabilities.
needless to say that Canada will most likly go to the US for the "organization with launch capabilities", but i think its about time Canada got into space. *SGDarkKnight tips his hat to Canada* good luck guys!
so what excatly has Roxio done? The article says
"breach of contract, patent infringement, trademark infringement and other violations of Federal law. The lawsuit claims that Roxio is infringing on Gracenote's patents by illegally inducing the use of Gracenote's industry acclaimed patented music recognition inventions" I checked out both web sites but couldn't find any other info.... Are they saying the Roxio is using the Gracenote's software or similar software? ARG! Ah well, if anyone has any other links about this, plz post!
if a company sells us some software, has it digitly watermarked so that they can keep track of copywrite violations, but dont tell us about the watermark... dosn't that somehow infringe on our privacy rights? im not too sure, anyone else have an idea?

are you trying to tell me that microsoft is unstable and most likely carrying some form of a virus? thanks impossible!

i guess thats one good way to get people to read the article (even if the article dosn't give very much information except for say "were done")
for anyone who really wants to read up on it, go here.
