They are both big decisions that should be left up to the individual. So someone has a vasectomy and then decides that he really wants a kid 20 years down the road. Then adopt, or put some away in a sperm bank before the snip. Or god forbid, you don't get everything you want in life.

My doc said no on a vasectomy for a few years, as I am "still young (I'm almost 26), and will likely change my mind."

I hate that bullshit response. Your primary doctor won't be doing the vasectomy anyway. Go find a urologist on your own. Trust me, you can get a vasectomy if you are under 30.

The lawsuit nonsense is just a copout. Doctor's get sued all the time, that is what they have malpractice insurance for. They tell you up front that the vasectomy is irreversible and you'll have to sign a form stating that. If this was really your doctor's reason, your doctor would never perform any vasectomies because men can continue to produce sperm into old age and thus could decide to want a child at any time.

You are just the victim of a breeding-centric culture and those who already have kids think they know what you want in life better than you know yourself. Consider yourself lucky though, getting a vasectomy at a young age is much, much, much easier than trying to get a tubal.

Forgot to reply to this in my previous post. Your description of Kerry as far, far, far left and Bush as mid-right is straight from Fox news. If you understood the real concerns of the far left, you would realize that Kerry is almost down the middle, which is why the Dems were so worried about Nader stealing his votes that they fought to keep him off the ballot in so many states.

Exercise and better diet strike me as a lot of pain for little gain. The negative effects on one's life show up immediately and the positive ones take huge amounts of time to appear.

I've yet to experience any negative effects from diet and exercise. The "sweat and ache" you refer to is not a negative, it is a positive. Most people get a high from working out, both physically and mentally. Most people like seeing their physical appearance improve. Most people like getting stronger. Most people like to be able to keep up with those young wipper-snappers.

In my opinion, nutrition is way undervalued. I used to get bad heartburn and indigestion on a daily basis. After eating out at my favorite pizza parlor or fast food joint, I'd be stuck in the bathroom or gulping down pepto. I was told to raise the head of my bed and take antacid before eating. Then I finally educated myself about proper nutrition and I haven't had heartburn or needed the pepto in years.

As far as taking "huge amounts of time", my heartburn and indigestion disappeared almost immediately after I changed my diet. Besides, proper nutrition and exercise should be a lifestyle, not a fad.

So it's all too easy to give up and say it's just not worth it. That explains the problem; as of yet I have not come up with anything like a solution.

In my opinion, the problem is that we are too accustomed to instant gratification, too selfish and too shortsighted to plan for the future. Sure, our bodies may be able to handle the abuse while we are young, but we will probably pay the price later on in life. I see too many people let themselves go and then expect medical science to fix them when they are broken. How much does obesity and heart disease cost us every year? Both very preventable diseases with proper diet and exercise.

On a side note, I just returned from Paris, and I can tell you that almost every obese person I saw their was a fellow American. Even if they weren't busy making asses out of themselves as stereotypical tourists, they would stick out like a sore thumb due to their wider than average girth.

I will agree with you though, a treadmill is boring. That is why I play basketball, ride my bike, walk my dogs. The treadmill does come in handy when the weather sucks, but I definately prefer the great outdoors. It is possible to make exercise enjoyable.

Except that there is evidence that our food supply is so degraded that its nutritional value is a lot less than it should be. So even eating a well balanced diet may not give you enough nutrients.

In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if people let themselves or their children eat crappier diets because they're "making up for it" with a pill.

From my experience, if these people aren't willing to spend the time and money on their diet, they also aren't willing to spend the extra money on vitamins and minerals. I find that most of the people I know who take vitamin/mineral supplements are those who also have good diets and exercise in the first place.

You need to turn off the tv and get out more, or at least read a book? You really have to work at being this ignorant about US foreign policy over the past century. US foreign policy is not based on what is best for everyone else in the world, it is based on what is best for the US in the world. We help others to help ourselves and we punish those that don't help us.

If by "assist other nations" you mean selling arms to brutal dictatorships and supporting governments at war with their own people and overlooking near genocidal atrocities (I'll leave it as an exercise to the reader to find recent examples of these), then yes, the US may well lead the world in this category.

It is typical of Americans to think that anybody who opposes US policy or is angry with America must be some sort of religious fanatic with a death wish, because we Americans can't fathom that much of our wealth and vast resources and cheap oil might have come at the expense of others. Maybe if we try treating the rest of the world with the same amount of respect that we expect from others, the world might become a safer place.

This may have been a wake up call, but the call is to all Americans to get their heads out of the sand and start taking some responsibility for the actions of the US throughout the world. America has a lot of blood on its hands and if we don't do something to stop the bleeding we will only see more terrorism on US soil.

Second, I'm getting sick and tired of listening to American's disbelief and shock over this tragedy. How is it that the US can enjoy the highest standard of living and quality of life in the world? How is it that the US consumes the most resources, far more than its far share, in the world? Do Americans really think that all of our wealth has just been willingly handed to us by grateful people throughout the world? Do Americans really think that we have no blood on our hands?

I'm sick about these terrorist attacks. When I first heard about them this morning, I felt sick to my stomach. But I feel that way about any terrorist attack in any country, not just in the US. And unless you work at being ignorant, you will know that the US has been responsible for its share of terrorism throughtout the world.

We can continue to feel free to go about our daily lives, enjoying our excess of resources and high quality of living, never asking where it all came from or why the majority of people in the world don't seem to enjoy the same. But we have no right to be shocked that someone out there doesn't like us.

Less employees means less payroll and benefits to pay out, which means more cash you get to keep for yourself. So how do you make up for the lost manhours:

    • Make your remaining employees work harder to pick up the slack. You may have to pay a little more in overtime, but it is cheaper than paying a full salary and benefits.
    • Find cheaper labor to do the same job. There are a couple of options here. Some states sell their prisoners on the free market (a lot of airlines use this route). States with tough welfare laws often require people on the dole to work at minimum wage jobs or lose all their benefits. Or you could try another country, preferably one with a represive government and lots of hungry people (I think Phil Knight has a list of them).
    • Don't replace the lost manhours, just cut back on the quality of service. Most people who use AOL aren't going to leave no matter how bad it gets.
