It has everything to do with legality in the case of Anti-Trust.

The monopoly has to prove that they are engaging in a practice for reasons other than undermining potential competition. Generally, this can include selling things at a loss, locking out distribution channels (like the **AA is being accused of here) or any other practice that normally wouldn't make sense unless you had a monopoly-type advantage and were trying to keep competition at a minimal level.

Now, in certain edge cases, this may turn out to be problematic. But then again, the solution to similar problems in Windows often mean editing the registry (getting nVidia drivers to do more than 60Hz refresh on some systems for example).

Is this a joke? I have NEVER had to hack the registry to get an nVidia driver to work at a decent refresh rate.

I have tried to change resolutions in Linux and get dumped back to the CLI though and this was a plain vanilla X 4 / KDE setup. I had to go to XF86Config to get it back up which wasn't bad for me but it was worse than anything that I'd ever had to do on Windows.

I'm cool with Windows and Linux but come on... let's not overstate the case.

Their current parts are very competitive with the differences in performance between the platforms being essentially academic to the people that would ultimately use them. The problem now is one of perception, a problem that can be overcome if Hammer has a smashing (couldn't resist... sorry) debut, performance and stability wise.

Well, when I used to work for RadioShack (IBM and early Compaq era) the profit margins on computers were in the single digits. Managers would break their necks to get those damn thing out of the store before they were discontinued and sold for a loss. All of the other stuff had a decent margin, especially the stuff with the Optimus Brand (which I don't think that they carry anymore) which was nothing but RCA, Uniden, Pioneer, and other name brand stuff manufactured with the Optimus brand name on it.

The profit? Wire, cable, connectors, and all that other little stuff that has been shrunked down to a metal cabinet. I guess the low volume finally got to them.

Though integrating IE (or any browser for that matter) into a web app doesn't quite sound right. Talk about recursive code. I think (hope) that the author is talking about an application that has html-based components of the interface (like the aforementioned Quicken). Or am I missing something here?

  16. Re:No, what's amusing... on Creating Applications with Mozilla · · Score: 4, Informative

    *sigh*

All that IE does for Quicken is allow Quicken to use it as an HTML renderer. This is much different than Mozilla which can create a standalone application. The Quicken developers had to use C++ of VB or whatever and embed the MSHTML control into it. Mozilla does not require anything in addition to the package itself to create a new application. So even though this isn't necessarily new, it's definitely a lot more than IE can do on it's own. Plus you can embed Mozilla into apps like Quicken as well. Topstyle does a great job of integrating IE and Mozilla side by side using this technology.

There was nothing knee jerk in that post. I read your whole response and addressed the Chris Rock part. I could talk about many other times that non-blacks have acted less than exemplary. My point isn't that black people are a benevolent group of victims, nor that people want to hold hands and hug all the time (I'm still trying to figure out where that came from). The point is that people constantly try to oversimplify race relations (and also justify the use of the word nigger) by quoting a skit by Chris Rock. It's easy to argue that this oversimplification based on something that you saw on television has more to do with mass generalizations than exposure.

I've lived in predominately black and predominately white neighborhoods. Downtown Atlanta just happens to have a mix of millionaires (and at least one billionaire named Ted Turner has moved around the corner), middle class, and homeless people with the usual business people thrown in during the daylight hours. It also happens to be in the middle of one of the most diverse college campuses in the U.S. (Ga. State University). In an environment like this, EVERYBODY shows their asses. I'm not old or squeamish, I love it downtown. I'm just telling you what I see and it ain't just black people acting a fool.

    Peace.

  20. Re:Why so resentful? on Virtual 1930s Harlem · · Score: 2

I am so fuckin sick of people using that "Niggers vs. Black people" Chris Rock skit to excuse mass generalizations of black people. Every group of people has an element that is undesireable, in pretty much every case that element is the minority of the population.

I live in downtown Atlanta and I see a huge share of ignorant ass black and white people, mainly young ones. Both populations have a formidable number of obnoxious members. This is evident after any major event here. A black targetted concert will be accompanied by lots of trash in the streets, loud music, and kids shouting all types of expletives. The white concerts generally have more trash, at least as many expletives, and a tendency to sporadically shout out "wooooooo!!" and "owwwwwwww!" at ridiculously loud volumes for no apparent reason.

Anyhow, the bigger point here is that the Harlem Renaissance was a wonderful period of artistic development in the United States and the original poster was probably frustrated at people making comments about crime and drugs in that neighborhood. It is sad that such small minded thnking is still around... but whatever.
