Just imagine what they'd do to a company trying to distribute a packaged DVD ripping solution.

There is a company here in Holland that does just this. I've seen reviews and advertisements for their product in computer magazines. I know someone who bought the software, and he's very positive about it.

It takes a lot of money to get the factory started and so one. Once that's done, it just keeps churning out consoles. As time goes buy, the price goes down. (Not including that CPUS, RAM, etc get cheaper over time...) Eventually, MS will sell these at a profit. (assuming Sony/Nintendo don't undercut them to death.)

Xbox CPUs are getting more expensive. They use Celeron 700s, which are already very old. Intel has to keep producing these CPUs especially for the Xbox. So Intel hardly has any economies of scale (small number of CPUs) and high opportunity costs (instead of Celeron 700s they could be making Pentium4s). Nvidia has the same problem.

Fear of change is what keeps these governments coming back to Microsoft.

As opposed to the change people went through from DOS to win31? Or from win31 to win95? And so on. I don't think changing to a Unix system running KDE or GNOME with Evolution and OpenOffice will be much bigger of a change as what they have been going through in the past.

Technically, the change from Windows to Linux isn't that big. Both KDE and GNOME can be configured to work almost exactly like Windows.

But the change that is meant here is the change from industry standard software manufactured by one of the worlds most successful corporations, to software made by some kind of informal, international network of geeks and hackers who, most of the time, don't 'waste' their time on documentation, support or marketing.
This is the way many non-geek people, like politicians and businessmen, see it. Businessmen are often willing to take risks such as these to raise their profits. But politicians are generally not the kind of people who take risks. Currently Microsoft software is being used, and it works so there's no reason to switch to something else.

...and while the Netherlands is a socially permissive country in many respects, it's also very tough on law and order for those things that it deems are social problems (just because in Amsterdam you can buy pot and sex doesn't mean you can kill someone in Utrecht).

Yes, marihuana is tolerated (not legal), and prostitution is legal. And no, you aren't allowed to kill someone, not in Utrecht nor anywhere else.

But what you're saying here is: 'The Netherlands is a socially permissive country in many respects, but not as much as the US, because in the Netherlands you're not allowed to commit murder'.

If this is the best argument you can come up with, I guess I'm lucky I live here :-)

What I do in university is called Information Management and Technology. It teaches me how information systems can best be used inside companies. Basically, it combines a business education with a CS education. I have to know have corporations work, I learn about management, accounting and basic economics, but also about basic programming, software design, databases and network infrastructure.

Maybe this is something fot you. You'll find yourself working with computers most of the time, but instead of learning exactly how they work and how you can operate them, you'll learn how to use them for business use. You'll be able to get nice jobs :)
