This book is awesome, takes you down into the deep caverns of hell that are the MS WinNT based OS.
Chapter 8 deals with security, and offers the following juicy nugget:
Security reference monitor
A component in the Windows Executive(\windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe) that is responsible for defining the access token data structure to represent a security context, performing the security access checks on objects, manipulating privelages[...], and generating any resulting security audit messages.
Among others. This comes from a sections called security system components. There's about 40 pages to the security chapter and they take you from authentication checks(user enters password) to actually observing the OS change a privelage. I highly recommend this book, it goes really deep into the underlying archetecture of Windows; farther than many would care to go.For those that missed it, it's MS Windows Internals, 4th Ed., Mark E. Rissinivich and David A. Solomon, ISBN# 0-7336-1917-4
While I agree with most of your post, I must ask what does IPv6 have to do with Fiber? Last time I checked medium and protocol had nothing to do with one another.
How come devs (paid and free alike) get flamed when a product is delayed, yet when another product is released on schedule but with flaws requiring ~100M patches, they get flamed still. Why i ask? Damned if you do, damned if ya don't.
As a technician I've seen it on hundreds of machines. I always uninstall it not because it's spyware or some malware, but because(and correct me if i'm wrong) this peice of software offers no new functionality to anything. Bloatware if you will.
I was disappointed to see that they've not made available wallpapers 1600x1200 or for widescreen monitors of this shot. I just got a pretty 20" LCD whose native res is 1600x1200 . Anyone know someplace that has hi- res/widescreen wallpapers? And yes, I know that hubblesite.org has some wallpapers @ 1600x1200.
Are they going to have the annoying Windows XP style message box hovering over the tray that tells me that my USB 2 device could work faster if it was plugged into a non-existant USB 2 port on my USB 1.1 system?
Has anyone tried making a "junction point" (like a symbolic link) at Documents And Settings/ to another partition?
This was a point I made a while back in another thread. I'm a 'doze guy who dabbles in other OSes. One of the things i love about GNU/Linux was being able to specify/home to another partition. It was simply awesome. I remember seeing somewhere that you could mount partitions into folders in WinNT based OSes, but that link is long gone.
My point in my last post was that despite the fact that the systems come loaded with linux, they also use commonly available hardware solutions. Just the same way that the entire dell dim4600 series has the same Analog Devices AD188x sound chip. It's all a matter of identifying the hardware and going to driverguide.com and tracking it down.
On the contrary, it's very unlikely that the system is using poorly supported hardware. In the interest of low prices, they use commodity hardware. Unlike say, apple, these guys arent worried what OS they end up running, they just want to move product. This makes it improbable that there's going to be any custom firmware/bios in the system that would prevent installation of another OS. Unless they're using a different architecture. Then you're fucked.
All of this makes me wonder, were you trying to put xp on a sparc box?
I was running Fedora Core 3 about a month ago and wanted to check out freeciv(playable online, etc.). So i got it via YUM. Turns out that was an older version that had been phased out and unsupported. There was a FC4 RPM, but guess what? wouldnt install! *shock* *awe* I did put some effort into compiling the app myself, but quickly determined that it would be in my best interest to upgrade to FC4. It can always be done, but the lengths one has to go to can be quite excessive.
However, Pokerstars, installed and ran fine under wine. Just run its installer, even created an icon on my desktop in K(!) ran beautifully. All from a package i had downloaded 6 months prior with no intention of ever using it with wine. Binary compatibility my friend. It is truly beautiful. I mean like, I could take that same package and install it on a windows 98 system. No recompile necessary.
What a glorious waste of mod points this is.
LOL

Whoo boy!! Have i got a registry key for you!

Au revoir indicates that you'll be seeing it/them again(soon). Au Dieu indicates a more permanent departure.
Did you just recommend MSconfig for system analysis and troubleshooting? Pffft.
HijackThis is much more thorough, IMNSHO.

Need i remind you that it only has 1 gb storage? 1 GB of FLAC ~ 1.5 hours, if you're lucky.

You'd be reluctant to give up something that worked so good for so long, too.

Your sig is actually Mitch Hedberg paraphrased. Get into it.
Price largely depends on quality. 7 oz of waht i smoke costs $2100us(retail, not wholesale). Of course, it's always free* to grow it.

Ok, here's a real world example.

Ya but do you have cross- distro binary compatible packages?
...but it was suddenly scary and crazy and wrong.
