Sorry if this was already pointed out, but MS does this great trick by hijacing ".mov" and then when you actually try to VIEW a.mov file it doesn't have the codec.
And then when you try to dl quicktime and install it over again, you don't have admin! *sob*
I was watching TV and they were talking about these cameras in Briton and this guy decided he was going to have some fun, so he dressed up as this huge insect-alien and walked around the downtown area of his medium sized town.
And what did the Bobbys do? They asked him for his id:)
Ever since I can remember, using MacOS has been all about not having to go through any extra crap to get something to work. If you want X on your computer from the internet, you click on X, and it unzips itself and starts the installer.
I am very strongly against Microsoft on all fronts, but I don't think its fair to blame them very strongly for this. This is very much in keeping with the Macintosh ease of use philosophy.
I also don't understand why people are making a big deal out of the option to turn this off. If this were enabled by default, it would ask the user "do you really want to run this"...what do you think the average user would say? How is that dialog box making things more secure?
How long will it be before special burners/readers are out there that defeat this stuff? Is special hardware needed, or can software/firmware hacks suffice?
From the artice: It measures, with great precision, how much current passes through a wire coil in a strong magnetic field to balance the pull of gravity on a one-kilogram mass standard, and how much voltage is generated by moving the coil. Separate systems in the laboratory determine reference levels for voltage and gravity.
Call me a computer scientist, but isn't there something recursive about defining the prototype kilogram with gravity and then measuring gravity at the same time? Or is there something I don't understand about gravity?
I recognize that a "greater percentage of the web" is viewable with i.e. over Netscape, especailly on linux, but I think your appraisal goes way too far in how bad off they are. I also think I may be being trolled. Anyway, what sites do you think that a *high school class* won't be able to view using netscape? MTV? ESPN? I think the more academic sites are less browser-specific.
My friend thought he'd hit the jackpot when he lifted a laser from an old cat-scan machine from a hospital and made a crude rave device...this article is talking about making *anti-matter* with a laser that the governemnt wasn't interested in anymore. And I only end up being offered used 486's!
What happens if they accidentally send you a 100 page document? Not only have they cost you a lot in printing, but now you're ``oblidged'' to take time out of your day and destroy it?
I don't see how you can incur responsibilities for someone else's mistake.
God I wish slashdot had spell check.
While I find your post interesting and stuff, I'd just like to jump in here and point out that you can send me a tarabyte of data that indicates that pi is random and it doesn't make one lick of difference. Show me the *proof*!

4. Depending on the energy density of the battery, it's almost *always* better to take a hit on weight for more capacity. There was a team in the first World Solar Challenge that had 20 kWHrs in their pack, and it paid off for them. Now 'a days one is limited to 5 kWHr's of capacity (unless that's changed since last rayce.)
Lest we forget the European union. They could also greatly change things.

A vi emulation mode is perfectly in keeping with the emacs philosophy: I made it part of the editor because it was there.
An emacs emulation mode makes no sense in vi, because it is not in keeping with the radical vi philosophy of "this is something to edit text with."
All bic has to do is ban the planing of terrorist activites with its products, and we can send our boys home!

I agree that what he did was illegal under the terms of the DMCA, but that doesn't mean that he couldn't be found innocent.
IANAL, but when a law is in contradiction to the constitution, as I and many of you believe the DMCA is, you're innocent (in theory.)

Correct...that distinction wasn't made very clear in the summary IMHO.

It's gotten to the editors! It's everywhere! It causes itself to be posted multiple times per day! Hide the women and children!

I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm rooting for the virus.
