Seriously, all of the blind people I know at school love linux because it is very friendly to doing real work with text. The importance of this cannot be understated.
That's exactly the reason I don't have a cell phone. And another thing to add to the "poor quality" is the fact that digital signals seem to get the shit compressed out of them...if they could quadruple the bit rate....
Unfortunately I think it makes better business sense to put 4 times as many ppl on.
If you were in the position where you were trying to get a handle on rampant piracy of your work, what (digital) means would you pursue to secure your work?
Do you believe that what the RIAA is trying to do is mathematically feasable, and that their attempt was merely the wrong way of going about the problem, or do you believe that what is being attempted is fundamentally impossible?
They say they don't use compression...not all audio compression schemes are lossy! Etree's Shorten (SHN) format gets something like 50% compression without loss, and that's nothing to scoff at!
Consider a situation where researchers come across some discovery that is really great at improving cosmetic surgery, and there are cosmetic medical equipment makers dying to get hold of said technology. Isn't the public served better by having the researchers charge for this new technology instead of giving it out for free? My point is that not all discoveries are useful especially for pressing human needs, and universities would do better to charge for them and funnel that money into cheaper tuition, rather than let people get cheaper nose jobs.
My friends "in the know" say that all this ide-spinoff stuff still suffers from the major drawback that it uses a lot more cpu than scsi, and hence the bandwidth numbers they proclaim are not achievable on a standard system...does this new ata stuff attempt to address this, or have I been trolled in the first place?

Seriously/. is not strictly a tecnhical resource, it is also a creative work. Creative works deserve nice looking packages, and the poster is right that face-lifts are a good idea.
I agree my post wasn't +5 *insightful*, but it's pretty fucking pathetic when you can get users (especially an AC) to tell you how to moderate, and you then proceed to do it.
I'd also love some links to show how it was "redundant."
Cutting your fps will markedly increase the differences between frames, which will hurt your compression, which will mean that you won't get your %50 reduction.
I agree that this segments Microsoft off, which is good. But (looking into the future) cat then take critical-mass with them and wipe out the internet?

Does anybody else get fed-up with the fact that any time some moron puts out yet-another-overglorified-speak-n-spell that/. seems to cream in its collective pants? What's really different about this as compared to writing about every time Dell or Gateway puts together a new piece-of-crap? There's nothing innovative here, nothing interesting (unless you're into handhelds, and even then it's only a blip)...I don't get it.
Since we/.ers don't advocate ip theft, and since we at the same time don't like new laws being shoved down our throats that restrict digital freedom, isn't this the course of action we want the RIAA to be taking?
<Flaimbait>
How dare you slashdot morons claim that the RIAA can't download ITS OWN IP!!?!?

I was really sorry to read this. Sun is a major force in terms of bringing unix to the masses, and I had looked forward to them using a UI that was something pleasurable instead of horrifying. It's a huge deal for all of us IMHO.
(I am playing the devil's advocate. I hate the RIAA)
People have really misconstrewed the RIAA's intentions in this regard. The reason the RIAA was concerned was that this law may now keep them from shuting down illegal ftp and web sites. Everybody agrees that ftp sites that give copyrighted info away for free are illegal, and the RIAA takes steps to shut these sites down, including persuading isp's to cut them off, saturating their bandwidth themselves, and exploiting weaknesses in the software they run to shut the down. This is NOT, nor was it ever, about randomly probing computers to see if you had mp3 files and deleting them, this is about shutting down illicit servers.
Contrary to what the article poster had to say, RSA makes a LOT of money. What does not make money, it seems, is trying to sell a free product (asbestos).
Because I'll look into getting the other :)
Now, many of you may see this post as a flamebait or a troll, but I'm being serious. You vote with your dollar too.

I'd still consider it non-destructive. It is only trying to keep itself alive, not destroy "unrealted" parts of your system.
Text!

Yes this is stupid but it's not a troll.

We tried to use forte for cs125 at uiuc in the fall of 00. It was a real mistake. Very buggy, very slow...terrible terrible program.

I am displeased to see so many of you people replying and asking why this would be a good idea.

The point is that this is *l337*. *That* is the point.
If there happens to be a practical application, that is completely secondary.
