In the abscence of slashdot doing what they should (mirroring small sites prior to posting links to them), I suggest they add top level support for supplying a mirror. I am sick and tired of read through all thr crufty comments looking for those one or two external links which are mirrors. Why not give a submitter the ability to mark a URL as a mirror to the posted story, then list the mirrors near the top, by the story.
Oh wait, I retract my suggestion because, after all, this is slashdot. I don't want to see 15 links for every story that all point to goatse.cx
But i think we need to develop some enabling technology that will allow artists to be successful based on the merit of their works. This most certainly involves eliminating record companies, and making it as easy to buy digital music as it is to steal it.
I would say a more realistic convenience store analogy is: "I think that bottle of malt liquor is only worth 10 cents, and if you won't sell it to me for 10 cents, deliver it directly to my house, and pour it in my mouth for me... I will walk next door to your warehouse with no walls and take one myself."
Stealing? Yep. Any more difficult than bending over and picking a 50 dollar bill off the ground? No.
You are more of an idealist than I if you think banks would work if they stored the money in the middle of an unguarded, open field.
You are one of the many who have never read more than two sentences about XP, and jump to the conclusion that because eXtreme is in the name it must be hacking.
I think your assumptions are the exact opposite of what is actually true; "extreme programmed" programs should be more reliable, because they don't guess for tomorrow. If XP is done right, what you have is what you need...nothing more. This is the essence of KISS. If you can't make it reliable by doing the simplest thing possible that solves the problem, I shudder to think what you will produce if you are guessing for tomorrow and adding things you don't need.
There are plenty of studies... just google for them.
Re 1: uh ok, and src/ to the jar Re 2: uh ok, add src/ to the runtime classpath Re 3: uh ok, see Re 1. Re 0: you can, in fact, put your build and source in the same dir.
Re spellcheck: Ant is not, as a core distribution, everything and the kitchen sink... it is an, arguably, minimal set of tools required for a meaningful build process. However, ant is completely modular and there are hundreds of articles describing how to add custom tasks to it. It was designed with this clearly in mind. If you have a spellchecker in mind you can build a new task in 20 mins and use it in your next build, or just exec it.
I presume this is not your first programming class. Provided you have taken Data Structures and basic principles, learning new syntax shouldn't be a serious problem for you.
If you are serious about making this your career I suggest you bite the bullet and "Get Used To It!" In the "real world" you may get a week to come up to speed on a new language. Granted you won't be an expert but nor will you be after taking the classes.
As an undergrad I took every programming language elective there was (including COBOL { there was no.net}). The only tips and tricks I can give are to want to learn the languages and you will have no problem. These classes are designed to teach you the languages. If you pay attention, do the required reading and course work and don't feel like you are learning them, then you need to look for a new university or switch majors.
First secure your own machine (which seems to be the primary concern for wanting to allow something like this)... Then, send the infected machine a note with instructions on how they can fix the problem.
Just because my car makes a funny klunking noise, doesn't mean I want Joe Mechanic sticking his head under my head when I'm in the grocery store.
For the longest time T2 was my favorite movie. I embraced it for what it was; a pure action movie.
But i seriously would be laughing at this trailer if it was on MadTV or SNL or somthing. It is such a parody of itself, it makes me sick. "She'll be back." Give me a fucking break.
What makes me sick to my stomache is that it will probably do a decent gross at the theathers.
So who wants to take on the task of creating a site for what slashdot used to be?
I could have never fathomed a world where a news site had duplicate articles still on the main page!
How can we think this is anything but a ploy to reduce server load?
How can a site with such popularity have editors that don't even read the site?
Maybe i'm missing the collective point...

but why do people think that information posted to the public Internet is anything but public? If you have some dorky site from high school (I held back the strong opportunity for an example), how is it wrong for me to find it? Has the access of a URL now become a matter of invitation?
Also, if a person is careless enough to have something truly bad about them in a public forum, what does that say about what lies beneath the surface?
Googling does require some level of salt when being however, and should give the person the benefit of the doubt when questionable material is found. This isn't me.
Like it or not... the current structure/stance of the patent office is that the very act of digitizing a process is a patentable idea.
While i think google does a little bit more than simply implement word of mouth electronically, it is a warranted under the current structure.

Slashdot no longer even has time to post the body of post...just the titles.
NYT is reporting that slashdot is reporting that NYT is reporting that slashdot posts nothing but duplicate stories.
This just in... that fact that another new source mentions this story does in fact make it newsworthy again, despite no new turn of events.

Give me a friggin break. This is good publicity for them. What could possibly make this a matter of "not being evil"?
When people say to Google they mean search with Google...not "Internet search."

Hmm... why would my CD player need a phone line... oh well. *click*.
While I totally agree with you... I pose the question: "Do you tip at restaurants?"
