haha, at UNH (and other college from what i hear), the SSN is used for absolutely everything.. you have to type it into a little computer everytime you go to eat (and then the computer scans your hand.. no joke). Logging in to register for classes? Login is your SSN. Taking an exam? results are posted via SSN. Privacy buffs are a little peeved about it, but the university isn't exactly rushing to change things, and the measure usually gets defeated when it's introduced (I think the kids don't like memorizing more than one long number for themselves).

I wonder who needs to be aware of the fact the kid graduated college to begin with. When that graduate out of this mythical 20% goes to apply for a job (or Grad. school), they're going to know where they graduated from, and be able to supply the interviewer with transcripts, certifications and degrees. This system is completely unnecessary, since grads already supply this information to the relevant people. Absolutely no need to get some huge database involved.

That's exactly the case. I had Ken Appel as a professor, and he mentioned the 4-color theorem a couple of times. As he put it, the math wasn't intensive, but actually doing the work the computer was able to do would have taken an army of grad. students years to finish. The way he saw it, the proof was understandable, just extraordinarily, arduously long. That's when they decided to use a computer to solve the problem. Unfortunately, there are still many pure mathematicians who shun computer-based proofs because they (or their grad. students) are not working things out with their own pencils. Unfortunately, I don't think that's a problem that's going away, but I do think it opens up some interesting doors such as writing program A to prove a theorem, and then haveing to prove program A's correctness, for which you write program B and so forth.

I will concede that you do have a point. However, why is it that the only people who actively parade their beliefs are the ones who believe in hate? The problem is free speech is being used as an excuse for people to post hateful, spiteful viewpoints, and not enough of us are using it to post anti-rascist viewpoints. I admit I am guilty of this myself, as we all are, but you said it best yourself: "a small minority will still flock to neo-fascist ideals." Those of us in the majority have to be just as active in showing our viewpoints. Education, not oppression, is the key factor in the matter. Censorship is not the answer. Sometimes, people are just plain crazy and will find somebody to take their hate out on, and there is nothing anyone can do about it but lock them up. That's what darwinism is for. But the majority of hate-mongers are just misguided and need to be better educated. I respect your viewpoint, but I don't see how the measures the Euro Council is taking weill be of any service. It won't work, and it's nothing but further oppression in an environment built upon free speech.
