You're assuming that the heat from a 10km rock (or dust cloud) is significant. Fission nuclear power plants emit gigawatts of heat each. The difference is the speed at which the energy is imparted to the atmosphere. The meteor dumps it energy in a very short burst, whereas the nuclear plant dissipates its energy slowly and continually. The meteor would likely cause a huge thermal pulse that may cause fires on the ground, but I think the actual conductive heating of the air (and hence the meteorological impact) would be minimal.
Why does inhaling helium gas make your voice go up? Well it really doesn't! It only sounds that way because helium gas changes the resonant frequency of your vocal tract. Every tube, regardless of whether its a piece of pipe or your vocal tract, has one natural frequency at which it vibrates most often. We call this the resonant frequency and it is controlled by two factors; the length of the tube and the speed at which sound moves through it. Since helium is less dense than air, sound travels through it faster, about 2 1/2 times faster. This is what apparently makes you voice go up. The faster moving sound waves causes your vocal tract to resonate at a higher frequency which enhances the high pitched sounds.
The same physics applies to hydrogen. Here are some data points using hydrogen.

Also, weapons can be made from the depleted U [johnpratt.com] from fission plants. They put it in the tip of tank shells because we can't make it fly any faster so we make it heaver.
They also use depleted uranium because it is pyrophoric - it turns into a slug of molten metal on impact that burns thru armor and sprays the inside of a target (and any occupants) with screaming hot molten metal. Ouch!
Studies of such "syndromes" as sensitivity to EMF have revealed that the people in question are utterly able to distinguish the presense of radio waves or whatnot.
I am one of many people who can tell very easily when any part of my body is exposed to certain radio waves. I can even gauge the approximate strength of the RF. I can detect RF with wavelengths around 1 um with just about any part of my body. I have a couple of parts, though, that are very sensitive to RF with wavelengths between 400 and 800 nm - I can detect very small amounts of radio wave exposure using these parts.
I lived in Monmouth County for 4 years - 1987-1991. I moved there to work for Concurrent Computer Corp. I loved the job, hated the state. The 'bennies' (derogatory term for NY'ers that clog the beaches in the summer) were intolerable, the beach was nasty (washed up while I was there: used hypodermic needles, parts of Mafia-whacked jockeys from the nearby racetrack, and a uterus, for Christ's sake!) I met some truly nice folk, but I met an awful lot of arrogant, self-centered jerks, too. The state sport seemed to see how much you could "get over" on the next guy. I beat cheeks back to Virginia, only to find that Jerseyites had started to invade while I was gone. Ugh.
A quick look at the ARRL site shows that a 248 km 2-way communication took place as far back as 1991 on 768 THz/442 nm (probably a He-Cd laser). The other record at 474 THz/632.8 nm was probably a He-Ne laser. The funny letters in parens (DM34hb) are Maidenhead locators that are used to locate positions.
The astronomers push for using sodium vapor lamps that exhibit a very narrow emission spectrum. Very nearly all of the light is concentrated in two very close together spectral lines - hence they can easily filter out all of the streetlights with a simple filter.
The more common mercury vapor lights have a much broader emission spectrum, therefore making filtering out their light much more difficult.
1984? Hardly. Concurrent Computer had this technology available on its line of minicomputers since the late 70's. They called it "sweep" instead of elevator, but the concept was the same.
On a related theme, I seem to recall that Tivo wrote their own seek scheduler for their PVRs - you might want to check out their source to see if it's "elevator" or not.
FROM: DR. GILBERT GUEI E-MAIL:gguie@rediffmail.com I AM DR. GILBERT GUEI, THE FIRST SON OF LATE ROBERT GUEI, EX-MILITARY HEAD OF STATE OF IVORY COAST, WHO WAS MURDERED ALONG WITH THE INTERIOR MINISTER ON THE 19TH OF SEPTEMBER 2002. I CONTACTED YOU BECAUSE OF MY NEED TO DEAL WITH PERSONS WHICH MY FAMILY AND I HAVE HAD NO PREVIOUS PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH. SINCE THE MURDER OF MY FATHER, I HAVE BEEN SUBJECTED TO ALL SORTS OF HARRASMENT AND INTIMIDATION WITH LOTS OF NEGATIVE REPORT EMANATING FROM THE GOVERNMENT AND THE PRESS ABOUT MY FAMILY. THE PRESENT GOVERNMENT OF LAURENT GBAGBO HAS ALSO ENSURED THAT OUR BANK ACCOUNTS ARE FROZEN AND ALL ASSETS SEIZED. IT IS IN VIEW OF THIS, THAT I SEEK YOUR CORPORATION AND ASSISTANCE IN THE TRANSFER OF THE SUM OF FIFTEEN MILLION UNITED STATES DOLLARS (US$15M)BEING THE VERY LAST OF MY FAMILY FUND IN MY POSSESSION AND CONTROL. AFTER THE MURDER OF MY FATHER, THE PRESENT GOVERNMENT SEIZED ALL OUR PROPERTIES AND FROZE ALL OUR ACCOUNTS BOTH LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL. MY ONLY HOPE NOW, IS THIS CASH MY FATHER CAREFULLY PACKAGED AS ARTIFACTS WITH A SECURITY/FINANCE COMPANY IN THE NETHERLANDS. THIS SUM OF US$15M CAN EASILY BE WITHDRAWN OR PAID TO A RECONMENDED BENEFICIARY. THE SECURITY AND FINANCE COMPANY BASED ON MY INSTRUCTION OR THAT OF MY LAWYER WILL RELEASE THE FUNDS TO YOU WITHOUT ANY HITCH. YOU WILL BE PRESENTED AS MY BUSINESS PARTNER WHO WILL BE FRONTING FOR ME IN SUBSEQUENT VENTURES AND IN TRUTH YOU WILL BE FRONTING FOR ME, IN THE AREAS OF BUSINESS YOU DEEM PROFITABLE AND NECESSARY. TO SHOW MY PREPAREDNESS AND APPRECIATION TO CONDUCT THIS BUSINESS WITH YOU,I SHALL GIVE YOU AND YOUR FAMILY 25% OF THE TOTAL FUNDS AND 5% FOR ALL EXPENSES INCURRED DURING THIS TRANSACTION, WHILE THE REMAINING 70% WILL BEFOR MY FAMILY AND ME AND THIS WILL BE USED FOR INVESTMENT PURPOSE IN YOUR COUNTRY UNDER YOUR MANAGEMENT. PLEASE I NEED YOUR FULL SURPPORT AND C-O-O-P-E-R-A-T-I-O-N FOR THE SUCESS OF THIS VENTURE. I PLEAD WITH YOU TO TREAT THIS VENTURE AS URGENT AND CONFIDENTIAL. THIS IS A SENSITIVE ISSUE, WHICH DEMAND HIGH DEGREE OF SECRECY. YOU SHOULD PLEASE HAVE MY CURRENT POLITICAL STATUS IN MIND. ALSO ENDEARVOUR TO FORWARD ALL CORRESPONDENCE TO MY E-MAIL ADDRESS gguie@rediffmail.com IF YOU PROVE YOURSELF TO BE INTERESTED AND TRUSTWORTHY, THAT YOU WILL NOT RUN AWAY WITH THE WHOLE FUND. IT IS PERTINENT FOR ME TO MENTION THAT PRESENTLY, I AM IN THE NETHERLANDS AS AN ASSYLUM SEEKER. I AWAIT YOUR URGENT RESPONSE. YOURS TRULY, DR. GILBERT GUEI
I toured the Bonneville Dam Power Station on the Columbia River between Washington State and Oregon. There's a huge powerhouse on a hill overlooking the dam (on the Oregon side) that produces DC to send to southern California. It uses two current-carrying conductors - one at +750kV, the other at -750kV with respect to ground. Talk about HUGE rectifiers! They claim that over the distances they send the energy that DC is 10-20% more efficient even with the conversion loss on either end. It also avoids phase lock issues (as mentioned ad nauseum).
You're correct that heterodyning occurs with RF, but that involves a non-linear mixing step, not simple wave superposition. An article in Sci American described the effect noted by the previous poster, i.e. that the brain does 'create' tones that aren't there depending on the frequencies of tones imposed on the ears. Note that if your scenario were true, the subject would hear two tones, one the sum, one the difference (assuming perfect mixing).
In your example (again assuming perfect mixing), a 100KHz signal mixed with a 120KHz signal would produce 20KHz and 220KHz signals, along with the original 100KHz and 120KHz signals. A doubly-balanced mixer would supress the input signals, leaving only the sum and difference products.
Amen, brother! My pet peeve it that silly Oort Cloud that everyone just knows is out there, but no one has ever seen any direct evidence of! It is merely a fictitious construct that helps mask science's limited understanding of comets. IMHO it is a bad idea to invoke a wild-hair theory instead of just saying, "We don't know."
Simple. Add copyrighted text to the SMTP 250 Sender OK, 250 Recipient OK, or 354 Enter Data message. That's your copyrighted material you're trying to protect.
...age of your house, you might have plaster walls with wire mesh in them! My house was built in '55, and the recption is poor due to the metal mesh over the lath strips.
Yes, it supports all those languages for code GENERATION, not code IMPORT. My point was that if you want to IMPORT existing Java code, you're out of luck.
As for these whack-jobs dropping vehicles into the desert, they should be prosecuted for environmental crimes. I live in the desert, it's a highly fragile ecosystem that just doesn't need any more abuse...
If it's such a fragile ecosystem, why are you living there? Isn't your living there doing as much harm as anything else? Human encroachment is the number 1 ecological problem. Shouldn't you and your tree-hugging friends be living cheek-by-jowl in cities to minimize ecological damage?

Yeah, but it'll save you from the Andromeda Strain!
Sterno Rules!
Yeah, but an ethanol economy won't make my voice sound like Mickey Mouse (tm).
Can you imagine singing the Munchkin song using hydrogen? You'd be calling dogs and dolphins for miles.

My wife got this at work today:It seems they've moved on to the Ivory Coast!
Note that they impersonated someone from "nowhere.com" when they signed in to the FTP server - that domain is owned by:

see this excellent PDF on the subject.

"I don't think so," said Rene Descartes. Just then he vanished.
Well, Luke, use your blaster to target them womp-rats! They're not much bigger than 2 meters!
They're a blast!! You can get them here (click on Miscellaneous Stuff), here, here, or any of these places. Adults and kids love them!

I was hoping that the tool would be able to import Java classes - no such luck. Maybe in the next release!

In short, don't call the kettle black.
not Marcy Geoff. I wouldn't be too interested "spending the night" with Geoff Marcy.
