How could attacking Yugoslavia in 1999 hide the "embarassing fact" that US forces facilitated warcrimes by Croatians?
Would the fact that Croats had American air support during the operation make any difference? Clinton's hands are far from clean in any of the three conflicts there (Krajina, Bosnia, Serbia).
Sure. Now use any method at all to copy between OpenOffice and Mozilla. Let me know when you figure that one out without using a third app. No, X11 cut and paste *is* broken (or rather, there is no standard) and it really ought to get fixed.
They don't want to get sued? Simple: when you give them your e-mail they should also obtain your consention (in form of a check box saying "Yeah I want the bloddy e-mail") to receiveing security updates or whatever else you want them to mail you. I doubt this has anything to do with security updates (they don't mail these anyway - they try to hush it up).
I did open the PB (I had to put in the AirPort). The G4 and the Radeon are very close together and are covered by the same heat sink (center-left, under the keyboard). That sink is connectd to the louder fan in the center via a heat pipe. Radeon 9000 consumes less power than the 7500 or any of the GF4 Go cards. It's UT/CPU that's making the fan come on. As soon as you start UT the CPU usage goes to 100% and stays there (it does the same under Linux and Windows). On a side note - I have a Sawtooth (2x450) too:) (I swapped the video for a Radeon 7500 a while ago)
Let me say I am a happy owner of the 867 15'' PB. When these first showed up people were complaining that they were too loud. So Apple responded and removed the fans. Now it's too hot! Oh well, pick one, fans or heat. Seriously, according to Motorola the 1 GHz G4 (7455) outputs 30W max (unless Apple put in something else not listed on Moto's site). That's a lot for a laptop and definitely warrants a fan. My PB has two fans. One of them has two speeds and the low speed is almost constantly on but it doesn't bother me because it's almost completely inaudible (I can hear it only if there is absolutely no other sound in the room). However after 15 min of UT the other fan kicks in and that one *is* audible (not too bad though). When you stop UT the other fan dies...
If MS were to lose share on the desktop (fewer Windows copies shipped) how do you think all other products would be affected? All would be less profitable because they are all tightly knit together and will not work with anything else. Everything in MS hinges on the desktop monopoly - their main product (except maybe their fine mice and Office X). Most other products exist just because of Windows...
I don't see why. I am sick of all this freeloading. I honestly think they should start charging for something (carefully though) instead of going bankrupt or begging for cash. Nowhere in the GPL does it say they have to give you the stuff for free (and pay for the bandwidth at that), only that after you get their software you are entitled to get the source as well. Charging for updates doesn't make them anything like MS. They would be like MS if they were to start muscling OEMs not to include Windows with their machinery.
TCPA chips sure looks like a bloody dongle. Identical functionality. I simply do not see any legitimate use other than DRM/licensing (and spare me the encryption speedups).
Any modern processor will deal with a well designed crypto alogrithm easily. I don't think your xssessions/teleworking are going to get noticably faster. I 'scp' large stuff over 100BT LAN all the time and my Celly 567 CPU usage is less than 2% (128 bit Blowfish). Similar results with VPN-ing. While it is true that TCPA chip can be used to speed up the encryption even further I highly doubtdon't think that was the motivation behind it.
It is a known fact that most spammers are in the US and they just use the open relays in China. Wanna kill someone because they have problems reading English manuals and therefore can't lock down their servers? Seems a bit harsh. Nuke the server or something... Now if that were a real spammer in China I wouldn't have any objections.
What is the obsession with the Xbox? Yes, it's cheap but:
1.) DRM enabled, requieres a mod chip. MS can change it at their whim. They'll be trying to hit a moving target technologically (& legally maybe - DMCA???). 2.) Small disk. 3.) Ugly as hell. I don't want that brick in my living room. 4.) I don't feel like supporting MS until they change their anti-consumer ways.
The idea is great and I can't wait until they release a Linux/Mac version. Will it require a Radeon AIW or something?
Really, everyone is being too hard on this guy. Altough he is involved with Linux he is just a salesman trying to make best out of a bad situation. I mean, AMI pays his salary. What is he supposed to say: Yeah, the primary use for our BIOS will be to secure a steady revenue stream for a couple of Hollywood/Redmond a$$es and take the fair use rights from the user. He is clinging hard to the fact that it may have other uses as well (VPN, whatever..) and that it may be disabled. In any case, e hasn't changed my mind a bit. That crap isn't going to make it into my house.
I'm so dependent on Google (professionally & personaly) that it's becoming scary. I don't know what I'd do if disaster struck (they folded, got bought by MS or something similar). As soon as someone comes close to the quality their searches I'll feel better.
How did the parent get modded up? A bit of history:
Netscape came out with a full featured virtually free browser that virtually no one actually paid for
The key word here is virutally. News flash: it *wasn't* free for commercial entities. Firms had to buy it. Netscape were making money on it.
Indeed, when IE first came out you had to buy it in the Plus! pack.
You are talking about IE 3.0. I don't know anybody who actually used that piece of crap. IE 4 wasn't a totally different beast and was really given away for *free* (not virtually free). That undercut Netscape together with the fact that MS prohibited OEM from bundling Netscape (and they got sued for that). This is also screwing Moz & Opera.
Ultimately, the entertainment industry will only be able to control individuals who allow themselves to be controlled.
Sure. And the rest of us are going to legally become criminals for hacking our own machines (see: DMCA). Wanna go to jail? I'll be dead before I put out a penny for any type of hardware that contains DRM. Go milk someone else...
It makes me wonder about the attempted increase on taxation of recordable media in Canada.
I am worried about this too. That levy amounts to plain theft (something like $20 per GB so an iPod would come to $1000). It sure beats any law US is passing to tax recordable media. Is there someone in Canada (like EFF) doing anything about it? Any pointers are much appreciated.
Amen. As an owner of a six week old PB I feel a tee-wee bit cheated. But this may open possibilities for others. Whoever delivers a 802.11g AirPort card replacement made a sale here (and I'm sure with plenty other PB owners). What would be even cooler is if that replacement had bluetooth as well (they both operate in 2.4 GHz so the built-in PB antenna would work).
True. In fact Intel tried something like that all by its lonesome back with the CuMine PIII (serial number). That had nothing to do with MS. On the other hand you can't beat the ex-CEO of AMD, Mr. Saunders. I just can't forget that interview where he tells readers to wake up because MS has won and then goes and testifies on behalf of Bill Gates. That's just plain whoring if you excuse my language. I mean Athlon *XP*. Gimme a break (I actually like the chip though).
This is already a bit off topic so I'll stop right here.
Yes there is a trick that can secure it and it's called an encrypted file system. And you are missing the point. Nobody cares about the value of the drives just the data on them. If they have the drive but can't read it they can't do any real harm.
I just did some quick research and it does seem that nowadays they pick DC for distances greater than 1000 km and AC for shorter ones (???). Still, high voltage supplied by a transformer is needed to transmit efficiently over a great distance, AC or DC...
I can't believe that Tesla's asynchronous current, transformers and the first hydro electric plant on Niagara didn't make it on the list. Without that you'd have to have dirty power generation stations every dozen miles because DC can go very far without substantial losses. The power wouldn't be nearly as available as today...

will be turned into nerdy geeks. It is well known that geeks don't reproduce. Biological existence of Maine is in question. Are they nuts?

OS X 10.2 "Jaguar" indeed has subpixel rendering.
Yup, it's under System Preferences->General

The guy that signed the presentation (Dirk Tombeur) is the BeLux MS .NET manager and judging from Google results gives presentations frequently.

Isn't this puppy the first chip to have Palladium built in? Oh, enhanced security thanks to TCPA with a bullet proof MS OS on top. Can't wait...
:(
Seriously though, the chip looks cool but Palladium just leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth. AMD is such a MS whore
