Have you had a look at the MySQL iPac logger? Business partner of mine converted iPac from a PostgreSQL backend to MySQL with a neat filtering system http://gpl.pws.com.au/ (link: here). Very fast apparently and he's using it in an Australian school where he does tech support... (They've told him to stop doing things with Linux cause when he leaves no one will know how to fiddle with them!!)
I don't mean what do you think should control 90% of the market but what actually controls it? Like it or not Windows is out there. The average Windows user doesn't understand what is running on their machine.
Also, following the purchase of a MS product (!!!), it is far easier to develop for Windows than other platforms like Linux and Beos. If you disagree then build a full Visual Basic program from scratch on Windows and the same program on Beos/Linux etc... If you think it's easier on other platforms then you have never built a reliable and properly bugtested program using VB. I'm not trolling - it's very much the truth - Microsoft have done some great things with their API and in my opinion its very very sharp HOWEVER I am not ofcourse dismissing the shortcomings that are inherent in an MS operating system.
MS have very useful features available for Spyware programs. Every part of the PC, be it data, configuration or otherwise is easily accessable (which would be forbidden in the case Linux's more stringent - and more mature - permissions system - this is a GOOD thing!!).
You have to think like a competitor - if you aim to target the majority of your user base who are you going to develop your spyware for? Linux users? Beos? MacOS? Be realisitic. You are trying to MAKE money. I'm not saying that money can't be made out of the others but Windows HAS a large established user base - which ofcourse is why they are scared of any alternatives. If you are a major contender in the OS business then sure - Linux support is important - but if you are a services provider etc.. where is YOUR market?
This is some food for thought - think about why Windows has more spyware... think about operating as a true commercial entity. Again - I'm not trolling - I'm being realisitic. If I direct my company to make software for large distribution my choices are clear and simple - PostgreSQL/MySQL Linux backend OR comparable other product/OS and VB Client frontend - there is no way my frontend at this moment will be written in anything else (except maybe Java - but that depends on the user base).
User base is virtually EVERYTHING if you are trying to EAT.
I joined telstra in october with the understanding from the tech guys that 4gb a month wouldn't be frowned on and that I will not incur any additional charges, 6 days later they change the pricing plan so for my 4gb I'm paying $180 a month or whatever.. so I complain to the ACCC and then whoever else will listen - Telstra give me a refund on the install (which I'm still yet to see u bastards...) and I've still got their cable modem (cause no one's asked for it back...).
Next I've signed up with Optus and I have to say the speeds are GREAT and the download limits (15gb a month) are 5 times that of Telstra's.
Telstra, with their chopping and changing don't really care about broadband home or small business users. Their plans are the complete opposite to what a competent broadband provide should offer and their download speeds are atrocious. So long as Optus chooses not to go down the same path I'm never going to use Telstra services again.. We have enough time getting broadband as it is without dealing with painful carriers such as Telstra...
I find it hard to believe it would cost $750,000 to make a Chinese version.
If you designed it correctly from the beginning using multiple languages is as easy as having a nice resource file (windows) and tardy select case function. I imagine the same can be said for MacOS and Linux/Unix varieties although I'm not to sure.
I've heard that the developers (3 of 'em) of Adobe Illustrator were Indian and were paid $7000 US each for the creation of the package. If a software company chooses to take advantage of third world countries in this way then they can blow me... Sweatshop salary ethics don't only apply to Nike and Adidas - back to the original comment tho - Adobe aren't losing out - they may as well sell the product, make what they can and then accept that piracy is an international problem and certainly isn't localised. On the other hand if their marketing analysts have figures that would show a curb in piracy then I guess I'm all for it...maybe.
I've actually been thinking about all of this (especially in relationship to Microsofts.NET) and it makes sense. With Windows finally approaching a 'coming of age' (hmmm) they are manouvering themselves into a very marketable position. Suffice to say I think.NET and SOAP applications together with the CLR will succeed where java failed in many respects - Microsoft have taken their time with.NET and ensured that they have services and languages that take full advantage of a lot content distribution.
At the same time this can be a sad thing given MS's track record of snuffing out ANY competition with ruthless business tactics. Given the fact that there should be more healthy competition in the computing market place I still however look forward to having a shot at CLR/.NET content delivery (ducks bricks..)
Considering their movement into the home market with XBox and other soon to be released peripherals (think WinCE mobile phones and to a certain extent: "Content delivery anywhere, on any device" a la "Antitrust". If they are the communications vehicle for Fox/AOL/Time Warner/Sony (you name it) they place themselves in an incredibly lucrative position and the framework libraries are absolutely priceless for quick and easy movement of content.
The CLR has a lot more to do with this strategy than a generic java clone - I'm sure its the content delivery mechanism for ruling the subscriptions of the future. Mind you the content will probably be served from Linux/FreeBSD with Apache/PostgreSQL!! - only way to guarantee good uptime:)
Thanks for the advice - I've tried to get my 2.4.3 kernel to work with my USB Cable modem but the linuxusb.org page doesn't have solid support yet.. time to upgrade my kernel and fool around a bit.. i assumed incorrectly about other USB devices..
As far as baudline is concerned though it looks like good software but i was specifically thinking of music recording software - I've seen exactly the same think running in cubase right down to the frequency analysis and filtering running 20 effects at once in combinations of both serial and parallel processing. I wasn't trying to be sensationalist or anything but when I want to plug my mic or ibanez in and want to record music the VERY intuitive ability of cubase or pro-tools is phenomenal. I'm not dissing linux at all as it is my tool of the trade server wise but one can never presume an operating system to do absolutely everything better than another - there are some things that MacOS/Windows does very well.
Linux doesn't have very good USB support at this time and support for Linux would make no sense to me if I was a developer - where's the real time recording software? I don't see Cubase or Pro Tools - and if anyone thinks the little sound demo programs that come along with Linux are any way equivalent then *cough* well...
Don't get me wrong - I'm not dissing linux at all - it just needs more support in this area - the power of some of this software, even under windows (as opposed to a mac), is astonishing and you can only appreciate it once you've seen or recorded a track from start to finish yourself.
(will rant slightly off topic here for a few paragraphs but will return after my frustrations are out)
I am doing this at my workplace (University)
Management created a company, says its 'University Owned'. Management and contractors are making money (not being piped back to the University) and spending University funds to woo clients. I'm sure upper management has no idea about this. We are breaking so many fscking laws its ridiculous:
- misuse of student photographs
- digital capture of your written signature using graphics tablets
- disregard for current Federal legislation on privacy
- disregard for University policy on database formats, procedures, development time and development process.
Management tells me to do one thing, outside consultants tell me to do another. The project design is out the winder. I wanted to have the code for the app open source with PostgreSQL running on Linux as the backend DB - was advised by management that Linux was for hackers and we should use Microsofts products. Now the 'University Company' wants to sell the software for $4000 a site licence and who sees the money? Not the University, not the 'University Company', not me doing all the development work - the fscking management.
If you are in this situation now - report it or resign - I know I won't be working there by the end of the month - I'm doing what I love which is development but hey if i have to go back to PC support to avoid all this nonsense then I will.
Phew - anyway - there a few situations where a University's business devlepment unit will actually become so specialised and big that it can exist as a commercial entity seperate from the Univesity. Which in my opinion is fine - however I know that a lot of students studying computer science these days have their final year projects sold off to private companies whilst the CS Department reaps the rewards..
Interesting little thing happened at my workplace where one student group didn't hand up their source code, just a binary.. they flunked their course but sold the code/product for a shade under a million.
you've hit the nail on the head. And many software companies feel this way.
I was at a Macromedia conference a few months ago and when the question came up about porting Dreamweaver et al to Linux the first reply was:
"How do we know you'll pay for it?"
And I can understand this. We have a business using Linux (cause we can) for our web/mail/routing and we want to keep an open source philosophy about everything we do -
HOWEVER
- my comrades are adament about releasing any libraries created within the business for public consumption and charge for external use of these libraries - these are two die hard linux fans who understand the nature of open source and yet still want to profit from closed source - one has to eat... hmm not being to clear on this (darn jack daniels).. but u get my point...
I remember reading an article about the MS Tablet PC and how they were trying hard to get as close to a printed form with their GUI's. Perhaps cleartype is an example of MS moving towards 'the printed form'? Certainly looks impressive on their site..
I'm just asking this question cause I really have no idea about whats out there... but wouldn't it be possible to make a port of the directx api to linux? Even perhaps using a specialised cut down version of wine et al... to increase development time for game porting? these types of ideas are the ones that excite me with linux. having multiple distros that deal specifically with one aspect of computer use. we all know that windows/linux/bsd/osx all cater for a generalised user base with the exception of some server optimisations.. I'd so much love a version of linux that dealt with media primarily for recording, digital audio/video editing.. i know one is in the works already... just seems that this could be the real advantage to all that source code so that we can create customised os's... ofcourse we dont want to run 7 customised os's jsut to have an optimised office/gaming/media platform however for those wanting to pursue such things on a professional powerhouse level...
