    You can buy a car and own it afterward.

    However, you can only buy a software license and own this license. Then, you can do whatever you want whith the license (eat it, stick it on the wall,...). The software, you can only use if you respect the term of the license.

    If the license stated that you can only use the program dressed in black and you run the program dressed in black and white, than you just violate the license and the copyright law.

    For education about hoaxes (and a wonderful list of hoaxes), there's one big reference site : hoaxbuster, lots of really easy to understand explanations of what is a hoax, why not forward it, ...

    Maybe it has a little drawback for you -> french-speaking oriented (mainly with hoaxes from FR,BE,CH,QC.CA).

    To answer the other answer : TCP is layer 4, IP is layer 3 -> GSM and all 802 protocols (ethernet ,wlan) are layer 2

    If you want a common layer 3 protocol, IP goes without any problem over WLAN, GSM (in its GPRS flavor), UMTS.

    If you want a common wireless layer 2 protocol, for me, it's better to have different protocols for different purposes. Just think of wired communications, there are lots of protocols. Would you really like to replace all of them by ethernet ?

    In soviet russia, 98% of the population was satisfied with the current regime. But no matter who you speak to, you always encounter people in the other 2%

    I can see one main advantage of this 'wi-fi zone', but I fear that it will not be implemented is roaming, so that you can just have a contract with your 'main' provider, use other hotspots and be billed on your normal contract. That would be nice.

    I also hope that the requirement states that there's not f*cking additionnal software to install. I can also dream of requiring easy access from other OS than windows.

    If you want to boycott them, I've already got some companies which are heavily employing indian-base workforce (and other very low wages countries) :
    intel, dell, hp, compaq, microsoft, cisco, ... and same goes for almost all clothes (gap, nike, reebook, ...) also lots of airlines (if not all) have their booking center there.

    Just for the fun, try to not buy things which are manufactured in china.

    According to this rules' pages :

    University regulations clearly prohibit the unauthorized possession, use, manufacture, distribution, or sale of alcoholic beverages on University property or in University facilities. In addition, students are prohibited from using drugs, possessing drugs or drug paraphernalia, and from selling or otherwise distributing drugs.

    Let me have some doubt about the application of this point ;)

    yep, you just inverted speed comments : it should be sth like "cheaper, slower, less dependable IDE drive" on "faster SCSI bus".

    but anyway, the conclusion is that there's no performance gain in using those things, it's just for legacy or other compatibility issues.

    yep, and then, you have exceptions within europe, with usually small countries (like Belgium or Switzerland) having both cable and phone networks almost everywhere (90%+).

    In fact, in my case, for broadband, I have the choice between ADSL, Cable, Powerline (!) and (soon to be deployed) public wireless lan.

    (My) answer : even if slashdot is us-centric, there are lot of non-us people reading, writing comment and (meta-)moderating (so am I). And I suppose that you know that america is more and more seen as a stupid arrogant superpower these days (thanks to many factors, incl. but not limited list : 'W', post 11/09/01 nationalism, 'unilateralism', industrial-military complex, ...). I sincerely hope it'll go better soon (2004, maybe ?).

    I don't know what SAT is, but I think you made some mistakes.

    if your 10% is the probability that 1 train will fail during NY -> LA trip then you've got the following probability :

    0 train fails = 0.9 * 0.9 = 0.81
    1 train fails = 2 * 0.1 * 0.9 = 0.18
    2 train fails = 0.1 * 0.1 = 0.01

    which means that the probability of having at least one train going from NY -> LA is ... 98%, much better than the previous 90%.

    Just imagine that nobody shares your music. That nobody ever gave some of your records to someone else to appreciate.

    I discovered many bands, small ones and big ones, that way, by copying tapes.

    Music is sharing for me. Why do you think (some) people come to concerts ? For me, it's to share a moment of music with a band and all other people in the room. I don't think that just listening to music is the whole thing and that sharing doesn't play a role.

    Also, I firmly believe that I have the right to do whatever I want with your music, including sharing it, as long as it's not commercial.

    Anyway, that's no black and white issue (like many).

    yep, but (at least my) provider configure it as a mandatory transparent proxy, so, not so much use

    A good idea would be to setup one in some high bandwith place (like at work, or at school) and then use it when you're dialing up normally. Best if it's on the other side of your personnal dialup system (well, not everybody can be its own ISP, but anyway)
