WineX didn't work either so I didn't do much gaming done at all. Aside from that single bad experience I've actually had more luck with games like steam under linux rather than Windows!! 1. Customer A needs to scan and OCR hard copy documents to upload them into our system. Of course they are not allowed to go down and buy a $200 HP scanner with this ability - instead they must wait for IS. IS has set up a $20,000 multi-fucntion scanner, but of course it does not do OCR. Of course there is an OCR program, but of course it is not certified for the current system image. 6 months on, over $30,000 in additional costs incurred - because IS can't provide OCR capability and won't allow a "renegade" install of a $200 HP scanner.

This problem is just lazy IT. If they can't take 5 minutes to add an HP scanner then you've got the wrong guys in IT.

    2. Customer B wants to use our system - its an ASP after all, no software to install - but their procedures for gaining web access are so cumbersome that it is simply impractical to give wide access throughout the business. More lost $$$, to us and them.

Again bad IT practise ... think of an IT department run by intelligent IT guys not lazy management types like you're describing.

    3. Customer C has their image locked down to Office 97 because of various (no doubt valid) MS problems. Users are unable to handle incoming documents written in later versions of Word. IS has no solution apart from waiting until 2006 for a company-wide upgrade. (Yet, strangely enough, the IT dude has Office 2003 on his OWN desktop)

And again, if there's a valid reason to upgrade office and it's showing up multiple times perhaps IT should either distribute a newer image w/ Office 2003 or perhaps OO.o, alternatively they could just have a copy of Acrobat on the IT network so any incoming Word documents can be sent to them for conversion to something that can be read by the current image.

I've administered networks as well as used rather locked-down networks. The problem with locked down networks in my experience happens only when the IT guys are too lazy or stupid to make changes. Any idiot can lock down windows. It takes someone with more intelligence to actually allow the useful while blocking the harmful. As long as the IT department is large/trained well enough for the number of seats it really shouldn't be a problem.

Anywho I've always been a build-from-source kind of guy but that's due (at least in part) to my FreeBSD background. In FreeBSD I had the best of both worlds, the port list which made it very easy to install a software package, and the fact that the port list downloaded source and installed! Nowadays I use Suse and as such I can use RPM's, however I usually find myself building from source whenever possible. One of those, "just because I can doesn't mean I should" type of things. I think that until there is a universally accepted and implemented package type that simply works in all linuxes I'll stick to source, not packaged.

As somewhat of a software pirate myself I feel inclined to defend against your comment Lucius. Though this is by no means a reason, you must admit game prices have risen too high. I'm not just talking about dollars (though I believe that to be too high as well) I'm talking about value. Now I realize that value is a relative term, and what would hold great value to one may not hold any value to others. But the point I'm trying to make is that buying Max Payne 2 for $90CAD and getting ~ 20hrs of game play out of it with no chance of replay or multiplayer is not a good value to me! Temple of Elemental Evil ($65CAD) even though it has no multiplayer functionality, does hold two points for me; one as an old school gamer (read played D&D Basic set) I really like the mechanics of the game, they did everything right (unlike NWN but that's a discussion for another thread on another day) two it has alot of replay value as you go through the game with parties of different alignments! Thus I purchased TOEE and pirated MP2. As for the internet functionality helping to remove pirates, they've been doing this for a while, only they call it MMORPG's and they charge an unfair monthly fee for the privaledge. I would have no issue if they charge a monthly fee to play on their "premium" servers. But the fact that I can buy the software box and not be able to use it without paying their ridiculous monthly prices is what's stopping me from buying FFXI. If they would at least give us the option of a LAN server ... hell it could require internet connectivity so they could verify CD-Keys for all I care. But I digress.

Back to the issue at hand, while I do agree that it seems unfair that a game designed on $1.5M should compete with a game designed on $200 worth of coffee. Savage does fit all pre-requisites of the Indie definition as given by the IGF and therefore they did win fair and square. Just my 2cp.
