  1. I for one would like colour... on Five Top Publishers Plan Rival to Kindle Format · · Score: 1

The only thing stopping me from buying one of these E-ink readers is the fact they only render in shades of gray. Sure that's perfectly fine for reading a novel or even newspapers but if you are reading a book about photography for example, well unless the book is about B&W photography you are kind of missing out on the whole point...

  2. Use a Cell/1X based System Instead... on VoIP and Home Security Systems Don't Get Along · · Score: 1

In Canada they just launched this service which uses the 1X network to monitor your home. It's much more advanced than classic alarm system because you can also self-monitor over the Internet, get paged/IM's/texted/emailed when something happens in the house etc. It also supports motion activated cameras that send pictures to your web account. I'm sure a similar service must exist in the US. Bottom line is this will work even if you're on VoIP... Oh, and no I'm not affiliated with them, I just thought it was relevant to the discussion. I have not tried them myself but will consider them when my current contract expires.

  3. Same goes for HD-DVD... on Sony Set to Market Blu-ray as Winner of Format War · · Score: 1

Toshiba HD players come with 3 free movies (yes three, it's not a typo) and the XBOX-360 add-on comes with one (King-Kong) so this is pretty much a moot point.

  4. Of Course! on Porn Industry May Not Decide Format War · · Score: 4, Insightful

Porn is only but one factor in who will win the format war. In the early 80's porn really made a difference in the Beta vs. VHS war because there was such a large demand for people to be able to enjoy porn in the comfort of their own homes. That was a huge driver and made a difference in VHS toppling Beta.

Fast-forward to today, does anybody think that the driver for HD Porn is as strong as being able to watch porn in your own house back then? It's not... So even though porn may be a factor in the blu-ray vs. HD-DVD war, it certainly won't play as big as a role as it did back int he 80's when it was Beta vs. VHS.

All these porn studios won't be able to ignore the millions of PS3's out there for long if there is in deed a market for this kind of stuff so in the end, like Vivid, they will find a way to bring porn to Blu-Ray if they have a chance of making a profit that way.

  5. Re:It is worth noting... on Wii Outsells PS3, Blue-ray Outsells HD DVD · · Score: 1

  6. Re:That seals it for me... on Decryption Keys For HD-DVD Found, Confirmed · · Score: 1

These rootkit allusions are getting really old...

the fact of the matter is that HD-DVD being cracked means studios will shy away from it, even more than today (BD has waaay more sudio support as it is). As far as I'm concerned this seals HD-DVD's fate. Blu-Ray will win, will be eventually cracked and we'll all be happy.

  7. Re:They both have Cell processors... on Sony Says Nobody Will Ever Use All the Power of a PS3 · · Score: 2, Interesting

"Sony has convinced you that you *need* blu-ray..and it's just not true."

That depends... I actually bought a PS3 almost solely for watching Blu-Ray movies. If you look around, the 20G PS3 is actually the best high definition DVD player for the money. It's even cheaper than standalone players that won't do a fraction of what the PS3 can do. I know the 360 has an add-on but the lack of HDMI output was a deal-breaker for me. For someone who doesn't need/want HDMI then the 360 + add-on is also a very attractive option.

Now I just need to sit tight and hope Sony's format wins... :-)

If this system can stop just one person accessing kiddy porn that is not technically savvy enough to bypass the system than I am all for it. This is child porn we are talking about remember, every little bit helps.

  10. It's only for the incumbents... on VoIP Services to be Regulated in Canada · · Score: 1

    RTFA...

The CRTC, with their infinite wisdom, only want to price regulate the incumbent phone companies to prevent them from squashing competition from smaller players.

The issue I see with this is that those "other players" are basically huge multi billion dollar cable companies. Don't kid yourself, the CRTC WANTS to see Bell and Telus loose a good chunck of their business and then they might lift their regulation stronghold.

Personally I think it's not a good idea to regulate any form of Internet based technology for the sake of innovation but hey I'm sure those so called governmental experts over at the CRTC knows better...

  12. There is always a way... on Microsoft Licenses Analog Anti-rip Technology · · Score: 5, Insightful

I find it amusing to see these companies invest millions in technology and licensing to fight a battle they know they are not going to be able to win.

All it takes is one person to circumvent the protection (we all know how good macrovision has been in the past...) or to have access to source material to distribute it to millions using P2P.

They need to change their business model, give us what we want (DRM free mp3 or similar) for a reasonable price or eventually suffer the inevitable... (which could be a good thing too, the music industry reborn)
