  1. Cutting off one's nose to spite one's face. on MPAA CEO Dan Glickman on the Broadcast Flag · · Score: 1

"Our companies want to continue to show their movies and television shows to viewers who don't or can't subscribe to cable or satellite systems. But without the broadcast flag, that option will look less and less appealing. In the end, it will be the consumers who suffer the most if the broadcast flag is not mandated for the digital era."

After you've withheld your movies and television shows, I guess you and the rest of your cronies will have to watch them all by yourselves. Not to worry, though; you're well-paid enough that you could easily make up the lost revenue.

  2. Is it me... on Microsoft Finalizes Its Desktop Search Software · · Score: 1

...or is the ability to selectively index file system objects just a way to avoid the long initial indexing process that would otherwise take place, as it does in Apple's Mac OS X 10.4?

If it is, I think it's a rather short-sighted "feature." You wouldn't necessarily want to index your system files, but it seems to me that other files you choose not to index are the ones you're bound to want to search some day, some time.

Does anyone remember Gates' book? I'm certain he wishes no one does. Released in 1995, it almost entirely discounted that li'l ol' thing called the Internet. Oops.

I wouldn't trust this guy to deliver my pizza, let alone guess which computer, mobile phone or music player I'll be using. However, like his underling Allchin, he nonetheless makes for a humorous read.

  7. Apple will beat this. on Apple Sued over Tiger, Injunction Sought · · Score: 1

They'll beat it because "Tiger" is not, AFAIK, the operating system's trade name, but a code name. And last I checked, Tiger doesn't develop operating systems, so how can there be any "confusion in the marketplace" over this?

That said, getting off Tiger Direct's mailing lists is like trying to wade out of a tar pit (metaphorically speaking, of course).

"Content owners must sue every single person in the world."

First, I know Apple's the content provider, not the owner.

Nonetheless, this is why I'd never touch PyMusique (even if there was a Macintosh version available). How can I know if this thing appears, to the iTunes Music Store, exactly the same as iTunes itself?

Apple's terms of service are crystal clear on the one client to use, and that's iTunes. If they know I'm using a different client, what's to keep them from suing me?

I think your parent makes a good point.

With a couple of exceptions (Entourage and WiMP; the latter done exceedingly badly), I've never heard of a Microsoft product originally designed for Windows being brought to Macintosh.

The above notwithstanding, I think the only reason Macintosh has Office available at all is that its component applications either were developed for Macintosh years before there was a viable Windows, or were purchased Mac-only products (PowerPoint from ForeThought; Virtual PC from Connectix).

Another poster pointed out that Groove has been very much a Microsoft shop. That, and Microsoft's track record of withholding many of its applications from the Macintosh platform, leads me to believe that if ever the product comes to Macintosh at all, it'll be a long time coming.

Regardless, anything important enough that's announced, I can find out at the end of the day on Macintouch. It's not that important.

Besides that, to paraphrase H.L. Mencken (sort of), one goes to MacWorld for many of the reasons one goes to the zoo. Except that there's a much better zoo in San Diego; maybe I'll do that instead while MacWorld's going on.
