Being a total linux n00b, i still managed to get Mandrake 9.0 running quite easily. Aside from the disk partitioning, which will likely remain one of the scarier aspects(***Attention, you will lose all data on this disk***), i was able to pretty much do everything i wanted through the gui. In the end i had a desktop, a working cable internet connection, sound and video up and running, the whole shebang.

It was the moment I wanted to add something to the actual OS that things went topsy turvy. Installing nvidia drivers? Keep dreaming, you'll spend half a week reading text files before you know how to do it. Check out some irc client? Better be prepared for some serious compiling, and if you're really, really lucky, you'll get one rpm, which needs to be ran from the command, because if you doubleclick it, nothing happens at all.

Praise goes to Mozilla in this case, since their installation was as easy as the one under Windows.

But all this is Compaq policy, not M$. Ofcourse it is the result of a deal between the aforementioned, but to be quite honest, if you buy a Compaq, you (should) know you will be facing this kind of nonsense.

As for having a valid copy, you got what you pay for. An OEM license such as this one is simply cheaper than a retail version of XP, and OEM simply means more hassle.

The trick is not to put something on it that remains constant, but something that changes all the time. So instead of the actual browser, dump the cache on it. Tell your OS and software to use the drive for temporary storage(swapfile for example) and then you'll get the most out of it. Something the article does not specify but which my software driven Ramdrive allows me to do is to actually load a disk image into the drive on bootup, allowing you for example to permanently install an entire piece of software on it permanently which will then only have to be loaded from the harddrive once...
